Mercedes upbeat after binning suspension upgrade
Former champions Mercedes hope to be challenging for wins again when they return from Formula One's August break after binning a rear suspension upgrade that made the car slower. The upgrade was introduced at Imola in May after George Russell had finished in the top three in four of the first six races. The Briton finished only seventh in that Italian race and Mercedes dropped the upgrade for the next two rounds before bringing it back for Canada, a race Russell won. That proved misleading, and Russell struggled in the following four races until Mercedes reverted to the old package for Hungary last weekend and he finished third. Rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli was also back in the points at the Hungaroring, finishing 10th after three races without scoring. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said the upgrade would 'be ending up in a bin somewhere'. 'We were misled a bit by the Montreal win ... we came to the conclusion it needed to come off, it went off and the car's back to solid form,' said the Austrian. Trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin said in a Hungarian GP debrief on Wednesday that the car was now easier to work with and the drivers more confident in attacking the corners. 'If we make a new suspension, we're doing it to make the car go quicker ... and clearly there's something that wasn't right,' he added. 'And it's not something that was dead obvious. Otherwise, we wouldn't have had the issue in the first place.' Shovlin said the learning would help Russell in his battle with Red Bull's Max Verstappen for third place overall behind the McLaren drivers, and Mercedes chasing second in the constructors'. 'Budapest showed that we've got a good car when we land it in the right place,' said Shovlin. 'And then hopefully there'll be an opportunity to build on our tally of race wins. 'We had a great time in Montreal. There's other circuits that are a bit more like that coming up over the remaining 10 races and hopefully we'll have a few more highlights.'

Bathobele Hlekani signing a positive step for the Lions
Having seen a lot of their best young talent leave the union, the Lions will be relieved to have lured one of the best rising young talents in SA rugby. Whether it is a sign of things to come, or a strange one-off move for the Lions, who are used to seeing their best talent departing for greener pastures, the signing of Junior Springbok star Bathobele Hlekani is a welcome boost for the struggling union. In recent times the Lions have fostered some of the country's best up and coming junior talent, only to see them snapped up by the rest of the 'big four'. Top rising talent who have left the Lions over the past few years include Vincent and Emmanuel Tshituka and Jordan Hendrikse, all to the Sharks, Wandisile Simelane, to the Bulls, and Hacjivah Dayimani to the Stormers. So to see one of the brightest young U20 talents making a move up to the Highveld, from the much more fancied Springbok-laden coastal Sharks, is a surprise that many didn't see coming. Hlekani, who is a utility forward that has featured at lock and flank, was a star performer for the Junior Springboks during their recent World Rugby U20 Championship winning campaign, and that has been recognised by the Springbok management. Springbok feel Hlekani, along with two other Junior Bok stars, scrumhalf and soon to be teammate Haashim Pead, and Bulls outside back Cheswill Jooste, were called into the Springbok training squad for the Rugby Championship, to get a feel for the system, even though coach Rassie Erasmus said they wouldn't feature for the Boks this year. Hlekani's burgeoning talent is undeniable and he will add plenty of competition to the Lions' utility forward department. The Lions aren't hurting for loose forwards, boasting some top talent in Francke Horn, Ruan Venter, JC Pretorius, Jarod Cairns, Renzo du Plessis, and Siba Qoma among others, while their lock department also isn't wanting. But Hlekani may believe he has a better chance of getting valuable game time to push his Springbok ambitions at the Lions, rather than at the Sharks, where he would have had to challenge players like Siya Kolisi, Eben Etzebeth, the Tshituka brothers Vincent and Emmanuel, Phepsi Buthelezi and Jason Jenkins.

Confirmed: Johan Ackermann keeps Jake White's assistants
New Bulls coach Johan Ackermann has retained the assistant coaches who served under his predecessor, Jake White. According to The Citizen, there was speculation about whether the former Lions, Gloucester and Urayasu coach would shake things up at the Bulls following White's divisive final weeks at the Pretoria union, the assistant coaches' role in his removal, and the potential redundancy of forwards coach Andries Bekker. Ackermann keeps Bekker under contract The Bulls were South Africa's most successful union under White, reaching three United Rugby Championship finals in the last four years. But after this season's final defeat to Leinster, White told media he simply could not beat the Irish side with the players he had. It later emerged that players and coaches were unhappy with White's leadership, which followed a more top-down and autocratic style. Assistant coaches Chris Rossouw and Bekker led the way in taking players' grievances directly to the board, which ultimately agreed to part ways with White last month. It did not take long to replace him. Ackermann wrapped up his time consulting the Junior Springboks following their World Rugby U20 Championship win and, on the same day he returned to South Africa, paid a visit to Loftus Versfeld. New Bulls boss brings a different approach Ackermann's coaching career is also filled with accolades – including three SA coach of the year awards and another in Japan – as well as several tournament final defeats. However, he brings a more unified and open approach to coaching. He told media in his first press conference that he wanted to hear players' opinions but made it clear they would still need to earn their places. Earlier today, the Bulls confirmed to The Citizen that Ackermann has opted to keep White's coaching staff under contract. This is especially notable for Bekker, as Ackermann was expected to take a more hands-on role with the forwards – a department where he has previously been instrumental. Ackermann also said he would observe Phiwe Nomlomo as he continues coaching the Bulls' Currie Cup side before making any tactical suggestions. The Bulls currently top the Currie Cup log with 10 points from their first two games. They hammered the Sharks 64–0 at Loftus over the weekend, following a 48–23 win against Western Province in Cape Town the week before.
