'Sikh Martyrdom in Indian History (c. 1500-1765)' will be taught as a General Elective (GE) course in DU colleges, the press release stated.
Its course has been approved by the Academic Council. The Vice-Chancellor congratulated CPIS on presenting the course on Sikh Martyrdom.
The Vice-Chancellor stated that this course is not only related to the history of Sikhs but also to the broader history of India. As per the instructions of Vice Chancellor Prof. Yogesh Singh, the undergraduate academic session of DU is starting on 1st August after five years. For this, the members of the Academic Council thanked the Vice Chancellor. During the Zero Hour at the beginning of the meeting, council members discussed various issues in detail and presented their views and suggestions.
During the meeting, the agenda was presented by Registrar Dr. Vikas Gupta. According to the agenda, considering the recommendations made in the meetings of the Standing Committee of the Academic Council on Academic Matters, the courses of various faculties were also approved after discussion based on the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF) 2022. Similarly, based on the Postgraduate Course Framework (PGCF) 2024, courses from various faculties were also approved with minor modifications. The Centre for Independence and Partition Studies (CIPS), University of Delhi has introduced a course 'Sikh Martyrdom in Indian History (c. 1500-1765)' which is for all General Elective (GE) courses. This undergraduate course offered for all colleges is of 4 credits, and it is necessary to pass the 12th class in any stream for eligibility for admission. The objective of this course is to understand the historical context associated with the Sikh community and major historical examples of Sikh martyrdom, religious persecution and resistance against hegemonic state oppression.
Through this course, students will gain an understanding of the gaps in emerging historical writing on the Mughal state and society, particularly in Indian history. This course will enable students to develop a critical understanding of the hitherto neglected socio-religious history of Sikh martyrdom and the evolving society in Indian history with a special focus on Sikhs.
Under Unit-I of the course, students will be taught the Development of Sikhism, the Mughal State and society in Punjab, Martyrdom and the Concept of Martyrdom in Sikhism, and Sikhs under Sikh Gurus: the Historical Context of Sikhism from Guru Nanak Dev to Guru Ramdas. Unit-II will teach the Saga of Martyrdom: Hegemonic Mughal State and Oppression, Guru Arjan Dev: Life and Martyrdom, Reactions to State Policies: From Guru Hargobind to Guru Harkrishan, Guru Tegh Bahadur: Life and Martyrdom, Context of Bhai Mati Das, Bhai Sati Das, Bhai Dayala, release stated.
Unit-III will cover Life of Guru Gobind Singh: Sant Sipahi, Battle of Chamkaur: Martyrdom of Sahibzada Ajit Singh and Sahibzada Jujhar Singh, Martyrdom of the younger Sahibzadas - Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh and Rise of Banda Singh Bahadur: Battle and Martyrdom. Unit-IV will cover other Sikh Warriors, Martyrs and Places of Devotion and Valour including Bhai Mani Singh, Baba Deep Singh, Bhai Bota Singh, Bhai Taru Singh and Haqiqat Rai, Mai Bhago and Bibi Anup Kaur, Sri Harmandir Sahib, Anandpur Sahib, Sirhind, Gurdwara Sis Ganj, Gurdwara Rakab Ganj, Lohgarh Fort. Classroom teaching will be supplemented with visits to historical places and screenings of visual resource films and documentaries during tutorials.
The statement said that, under the Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC), DU students will now also learn the tricks of radio jockeying. In this program, students will be trained in tasks such as voice training, pronunciation, studio operation, and real-time show hosting, including mock studio practice and interaction with professionals. Nuances such as voice warm-up, breath control, pitch, tone, and pronunciation, as well as the use of a microphone and audio console, the basics of recording software, music curation and segment planning, show schedule, live audience interaction, script reading, diction, intonation, anchoring practice, and feedback will be taught.
Some new courses, including radio jockeying, are also being added to the list of DU's Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC) based on the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF) 2022. A proposal to this effect has been approved in the Academic Council meeting. Additionally, eight new courses will be taught in SEC, namely Vacuum Technology, Eco-Printing on Textiles, Surface Ornamentation, Digital Tools for Interior Design, Radio Jockeying, Medical Diagnostics, Methods in Epidemiological Data Analysis, and Methods in Epidemiological Data Collection.
The University of Delhi is implementing the fourth year of undergraduate programmes from the academic session 2025-26, introducing three tracks at the undergraduate level: Dissertation, Academic Projects, and Entrepreneurship.
As per the UGCF 2022, along with the UGC Regulation 2018 (as amended from time to time), a draft guideline has been prepared for the supervision of Dissertations, Academic projects, and Entrepreneurship in the fourth year of undergraduate programmes in the university colleges. It was presented in the meeting of the Academic Council for discussion. After the discussion in the meeting, these were passed, it stated.
Accordingly, all faculty members, with or without a PhD, shall be eligible to supervise students undertaking Research, Dissertation, or Entrepreneurship projects. Supervisors should be allocated to students as far as possible based on the student's subject and the faculty's expertise in that area. Colleges may formulate objective parameters for the purpose of allocating students for supervision. An Advisory Committee for Research (ACR) for each student shall be constituted in the prescribed manner, as per release.
The release further mentioned that all students admitted to DU in the academic session 2016-2017 who are unable to complete their programme within the normal period of the minimum duration prescribed for it for any reason may be allowed a one-year extension beyond the normal period to clear the backlog and be eligible for the degree. It is noteworthy that the change in course structure due to the transition from CBCS to UGCF has led to a situation where some students are unable to complete their studies within the prescribed period under Ordinance 8 of the University Ordinances.
The statement said that against this background, the matter has been extensively deliberated upon in the larger interest of the students to facilitate them in completing their undergraduate/postgraduate programmes under CBCS as those students who have fallen behind by one year in the final stage of CBCS will be able to avail the benefit of this measure of one additional year of duration. MP cabinet approves statewide Geeta Bhavans to promote cultural, spiritual learning
Bhopal: In a significant decision aimed at deepening cultural roots and expanding access to spiritual education, the Madhya Pradesh cabinet on Tuesday approved the construction of Geeta Bhavans across all urban local bodies in the state. The initiative, which carries a budgetary provision of Rs 100 crore, will be implemented over the next five years. 'As our chief minister had announced to construct Geeta Bhavans in each district. The state cabinet on Tuesday approved the scheme, and all district collectors have been asked to provide land on a token amount of Rs 1 only if land is not available with urban bodies. The scheme is for five years, which means all the districts will have Geeta Bhavan within five years," Urban Development Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya said here after the cabinet meeting. He described the Geeta Bhavan concept as 'unique and inclusive,' noting that the halls will be available free of cost to social, religious, and cultural organisations. To ensure financial sustainability, each Bhavan will include commercial extensions such as shops and service centres. 'Some districts can construct these Geeta Bhavans on a PPP mode, as funding size has not been decided yet,' he said. Each Geeta Bhavan will serve as a community hub for religious study, cultural events, and spiritual discourse. The halls will feature libraries and e-libraries stocked with literature on Indian philosophy, the Bhagavad Gita, and other sacred texts. Facilities will also include auditoriums, cafeterias, and refreshment centres, with seating capacities ranging from 250 to 1,500, depending on the size of the urban body. The architecture of the Bhavans will reflect traditional Madhya Pradesh styles, incorporating local art and murals. Municipal bodies may also collaborate with private partners for construction and maintenance, allowing for flexible implementation across diverse regions. Officials said the initiative will not only provide a permanent venue for spiritual and cultural gatherings but also create employment opportunities and foster a deeper connection between youth and India's philosophical heritage. Religious organisations and literary groups have welcomed the move, calling it a timely investment in the state's cultural infrastructure. With the cabinet's green light and budgetary backing, Madhya Pradesh's Geeta Bhavan network is poised to become a cornerstone of community life and spiritual engagement across the state.

US warns Indians: I-94 date, not visa expiry, decides your legal stay
Staying in the United States beyond the authorised date is an 'overstay' and could result in visa revocation, deportation and ineligibility for future visas, the US Embassy in India said on Monday. US Embassy's reminder on visa rules In a post on X, the embassy clarified: 'Your authorised period of stay is the 'Admit Until Date' on your I-94, not your US visa expiration date. Staying in the United States beyond your authorised date is called an 'overstay' and could result in a visa revocation, possible deportation, and ineligibility for future visas. You can check your I-94 date at On August 13, the embassy posted another message: 'Illegal entry into the United States is not an option. Those who break US law will be returned to their country or face criminal charges.' Earlier, on August 9, it had written: 'Our message is clear: those who violate US border security will be held accountable. We're working our network of global partnerships to root out illegal immigration and protect the integrity of our travel documents.' The embassy has repeatedly used social media to remind visa holders of the consequences of overstaying. On June 19, it wrote that a US visa is 'a privilege, not a right' and that screening does not stop after the visa is issued. President Trump's gain is America's loss: The high cost of Trumpian diplomacy
President Donald Trump seems to have gained a lot from his way of conducting American foreign policy from the very inception of his second term in office in January 2025. But has the US gained anything out of the Trumpian method of conducting diplomacy? What are Trump's private gains then? First of all, Trump's self-image and his belief that he can run the country's policy towards the rest of the world like an emperor towards his subjects are yet to rupture. No major power in the world appears equipped to confront him directly. Any country that has attempted to do so has remained ineffective. Many powerful countries rather have tried to massage his ego in very many ways. For example, President Vladimir Putin, despite his diplomatic victory in the Alaska summit, went to the extent of admitting that if Trump had been in power, there would not have been the Ukraine War! It was music to Trump's ears and made Trump forget his resolve to make Russia face 'severe consequences' if Putin did not sign on to a ceasefire agreement. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Second, despite Trump's now-on-then-off tariff policy that has not been based on sound economics but on flimsy grounds, countries around the world are struggling hard to somehow negotiate with him and conclude 'deals'. He imposed high tariffs on Mexico because that country did not do enough to stop illegal immigrants from entering US territory and failed to prevent fentanyl imports into the US. Similar was the argument on high tariffs on imports from Canada. He announced 50 per cent tariffs on Brazilian goods imported into the US, because he did not like the trial of former President Bolsonaro, accused of attempting a coup to stay in power! Trump threatened 25 per cent secondary sanctions on Indian goods because India bought oil from Russia. He did not extend secondary sanctions to European countries who also purchased Russian energy resources, though less in amount in comparison to Indian purchases. He refrained from imposing the same sanctions on China, which buys more Russian oil than India. Worse, he has not imposed any sanctions on Russia, accused of slow-peddling his efforts for a ceasefire agreement. Trump imposed high tariffs on Nato members of Europe, most of them also being members of the European Union, because these countries did not spend enough on defence and contributed more towards the alliance's budget. Similar was the logic to subject Japan and South Korea to high tariffs. He perceived the allies to be getting American protection at a cheaper rate while ripping off the US through trade. Do any of those reasons cited by President Trump for imposing high tariffs make sound economic sense? It is all politics. Third, Trump has so far triumphed, as he seems to be trying to garner as much revenue as possible to offset the budget deficit that will surely and greatly swell due to his pro-rich taxation policy. He hardly cares about its impact on middle-class consumers who supported him during the last election but cannot politically punish him anymore as he is no longer going to contest any election. Trump's tariff policy will sooner or later affect American companies that do import businesses. It will also adversely affect the countries that export goods to the US. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD In all these, President Trump may benefit, while others lose. When myriad countries are sending their officials and leaders to Washington to strike trade deals, President Trump looks royal, and his king-size appearance satisfies his ego as well. He is also lucky, as forecast by many economists about the dire consequences of his tariff policy on inflation and employment have not yet been demonstrated on the ground. While the current state of the US economy may deteriorate once the high import tariffs begin to bite more severely, Trump appears more focused on the present. His policies may backfire later, but he will have the authority to change course. The unfortunate aspect of Trump's policies is that the victims of his haphazard tariff announcements will not be compensated. And Trump may not lose much financially or otherwise. Fourth, besides his erratic tariff policy, President Trump has given a body blow to foreign assistance schemes to numerous countries by cutting off assistance completely or reducing it substantially. Foreign aid has been a flagship foreign policy tool of the United States for decades. US foreign aid on the surface looks like Santa Claus doling out freebies to various countries, but in reality, it buys the United States immediate strategic benefits and financial gains in the long run. It also consolidates American influence over decision-making in the recipient countries. President Trump may once again gain by saving money that may be of use to deal with the budget deficit and manage his pro-business taxation policy. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The political and economic gain for the Trump presidency, however, has negative consequences for the United States. Some of the negative consequences are already discernible. One, the mistrust between the US and the NATO allies has widened a great deal. He succeeded in forcing the NATO allies to contribute more to the alliance by spending more on defence, but has failed to reinforce mutual trust among the allies. The same can be said about US-Japan and US-South Korean bilateral strategic alliances. Two, the Trump Administration spends much less on foreign assistance, but its consequences in terms of reduction of its soft power as well as political influence in numerous aid recipient countries will surely cost the United States very dearly. Three, the durability and intensity of the strategic partnership that the US has built in the last two decades with countries such as India, Vietnam, Indonesia, and many other countries has come under question. Future administrations will need to invest far more in renewing confidence with strategic partners, and yet there is no guarantee of success. Four, most American allies and strategic partners will almost certainly try to recalibrate their policies and de-risk their closer ties with the United States. It will take time, but their intention and the process have already begun. Trump's gain appears to be America's loss.
