Two Romanian men charged over NSW card skimming scam that netted more than $800K
Two men have been charged after the Australian Federal Police busted a card skimming scheme that saw the pair allegedly net almost a $1 million from victims.
Police will allege the two Romanian men, aged 41 and 48, tampered with a slew of ATMs and managed to steal more than $800,000.
Multiple banks reported fraudulent activity to the AFP in April after ATMs in Chatswood, Darlinghurst and Burwood had thin metal devices inserted into the card slots by two men.
Police will also allege the men expanded their scheme to the Illawarra, where ATMs in Warilla, Shellharbour, Fairy Meadow, Warrawong and Berkeley were also interfered with.
Skimmers are used to capture the financial data on bank cards by stealing the information stored on their magnetic strips.
Police allege the pair cloned bank cards with the data and were able to steal more than $800,000.
Vision captured by cameras on ATMs also allegedly captured them attempting to cover up the cameras while the devices were implanted.
Images provided to the ABC showed one of the men on camera using one of the tampered machines.
Another showed both men installing one of the skimmers on an ATM machine.
The men were arrested during raids in Chatswood and Homebush on Thursday where they seized fake business cards, cash, card skimmers and fake passports, which police allege the men used to pose as bank employees.
"A message to potential criminals — your actions can always be traced, and the AFP will not hesitate to apprehend and prosecute you."
The two men will front Hornsby Local Court on Friday charged with dealing with more than $100,000 in proceeds of crime.
They face a potential maximum sentence of 20 years in jail if convicted.
The older man was also charged with possessing a fake passport and submitting false information to a reporting entity.

Former AFL star Wayne Carey has been filmed in an altercation with another man outside a Melbourne pub. The 54-year-old Carey appears to be embroiled in a heated exchange involving two other men outside the Albert Park Hotel on Thursday night, as first reported by the Herald Sun. The masthead reports the incident kicked off after one man, who is believed to be known to the fallen star, began insulting Carey outside the venue. 'This individual is a serial harasser — and he chose to repeat his behaviour through vile and obscene slurs, again, last night.' Carey, who was wearing a white T-shirt, beige pants and white sneakers, is seen grabbing the shirt of the man as another calls out for the former half-forward to 'relax'. The other man involved tries to quell the drama, repeatedly swearing and telling the first person to walk away. In the video, a female voice who appears to be a local resident is also heard saying 'guys, walk away, people live here'. The Herald Sun states the man has been harassing Carey for more than six months. Eventually, the man involved walked away in one direction, with Carey walking the other way. Carey, who welcomed the birth of his fourth child late last year, has been caught up in a number of public incidents, including allegations of domestic violence, an assault conviction and issues with drugs and alcohol. In 2022 Carey was let go by Channel 7 after he had been escorted out of Crown Perth when a small bag containing a powdered substance fell out of his pocket. Carey was cleared of any wrongdoing. Last year, Carey was engulfed in a public drama surrounding his position in the NSW Australian Hall of Fame. Carey became part of the inaugural inductees to the NSW AFL Hall of Fame and was also reportedly set to become one of 10 inductees elevated to Legend status — until the AFL intervened. Not only was Carey blocked from achieving Legend status, but after consultation with AFL CEO Andrew Dillon, the former Kangaroos skipper did not attend the gala night at all. He attempted to force an end to the commentary over his checkered past in November last year, stating 'enough is enough' and he won't 'live with toxic shame'. His ex-partner Kate Neilson responded by rubbishing a number of the claims that Carey had made on Sam Newman's podcast.

City of Vincent curbs e-scooter rentals following the death of 51-year-old pedestrian Thanh Phan in Perth
Another council has pulled the pin on e-scooter rentals a day after the City of Perth suspended the service following the death of 51-year-old pedestrian Thanh Phan. Mr Phan was allegedly struck down from behind by an intoxicated rider in Perth's CBD about 8.40pm on Saturday. He suffered a brain bleed and was rushed to hospital, but died from his injuries days later. British tourist Alicia Kemp, 24, now faces charges of dangerous driving occasioning bodily harm and dangerous driving occasioning death after Mr Phan died. Police allege she was under the influence of alcohol with a 26-year-old passenger on board, before she hit Mr Phan. The City of Vincent's decision to suspend e-scooter hires while it reviews the service comes a day after its neighbour, the City of Perth, suspended the service in response to the fatality. Vincent informed its residents e-scooters were no longer be available for hire until further notice and all hireable e-scooters would be removed from the streets within the next 48 hours. Vincent Mayor Alison Xamon said they were very saddened to hear about Mr Phan's death. 'Like our neighbours at Perth, we have decided to temporarily suspend our trial so we can review the safety of the hireable e-scooters and consider ways to improve this service or if it even needs to continue,' she said. 'We will continue to work closely with our service providers on potential changes to their operations here in Vincent.' Ms Xamon said public safety was a top priority and they would consider if safety-related measures such as time-of-day restrictions could be implemented on e-scooters. Australian Medical Association WA president Michael Page told NewsWire at least one person a day was admitted to WA's trauma unit with major injuries caused from e-scooters. Dr Page said the number of patients with really serious traumatic injuries from e-scooters had been increasing and they were seeing people being admitted with serious head injuries, bone fractures, life altering injuries and sometimes fatal injuries. 'It's really a scourge in terms of injuries in our society and the problem with these council endorsed private hire e-scooters in city centres is people are hopping on without any experience riding e scooters,' he said. 'They're often intoxicated. They might be riding at night. They might not be wearing proper protection and so the chance for something to go wrong is, is very, very high.' While the AMAWA are not calling for a total ban of e-scooters, Dr Page said hire schemes endorsed by councils to activate city centres and bring vibrancy were a risk 'The question really has to be, does the benefit outweigh the risks when we're seeing deaths and many injuries?' he said. 'They are dangerous you've got plenty of evidence from other cities around the world, other countries around the world, from across WA that these schemes are not very safe.'
