South Africa Eye First Knockout Spot At TotalEnergies CHAN
Having qualified for the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) for only the fourth time, South Africa will be hoping to finally break their group-stage curse and go deeper into the tournament.
Bafana Bafana's CHAN journey has been a mixed one. Their best performance came in 2014 on home soil when they made it out of the group stages but were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Nigeria.
Since then, they've struggled to make a meaningful impact, with disappointing campaigns in 2016 and failure to qualify in 2018 and 2022. This year, South Africa return with renewed intent and a squad selected from the country's domestic-based players, giving a platform for local talent to shine on the continental stage.
Despite hosting the tournament in 2014, they've never reached the semi-final stage. This year presents a big opportunity to rewrite that history.
What To Expect:
There is cautious optimism around this Bafana Bafana team, which features domestic league standouts and emerging stars the lower division. With more technical depth and attacking flair than in previous editions, expectations are that Ntseki's side will aim to at least make the knockout phase.
Fan Zone:
Did you know? South Africa's only senior continental title came at the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON 1996 on home soil. Since then, the country has been chasing another major trophy at senior level. While CHAN is not contested with overseas-based players, it remains a prestigious platform, especially for homegrown talent seeking to break into the senior Bafana Bafana squad for future TotalEnergies CAF AFCON or World Cup campaigns.
How They Qualified:
South Africa sealed their spot at the finals after a dominant 2-1 aggregate win over Malawi in the final qualification round. Under the guidance of coach Molefi, the squad impressed over both legs with attacking intent and solid defensive shape.
Key Player To Watch: Neo Maema
The Mamelodi Sundowns attacking midfielder is a visionary player who is renowned for both creating and finishing off scoring chances. His influence was vital as Bafana Bafana managed to qualify for the next edition of the CHAN.
Know The Coach: Know The Coach: Molefi Ntseki
Molefi Ntseki returns to the national team fold with the responsibility of guiding Bafana Bafana's CHAN squad. The 54-year-old previously served as head coach of the senior national team from 2019 to 2021, having also worked extensively within SAFA's youth structures, including the U17 and U20 teams.
Known for his tactical discipline and deep knowledge of domestic football, Ntseki is seen as a coach who can get the best out of locally-based players. His focus on structured build-up play and defensive organisation will be key in South Africa's quest to make it past the group stage for just the second time in TotalEnergies CAF CHAN history.

Infantino explores Egypt's beauty - Sports - Al-Ahram Weekly
The week started with the visit of FIFA President Gianni Infantino to Egypt's North Coast city of Alamein where he was received by Egyptian Football Association President Hani Abu Rida who is also a member of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the FIFA Council. Infantino expressed his happiness to be spending his summer vacation in Egypt, emphasising the uniqueness of football in a country he described as proud of the game. 'The passion for football runs deep in Egypt... and the North Coast is one of the jewels of the Mediterranean,' he said. In the coastal city of New Alamein, Infantino met Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhi and Abu Rida. The visit focused on strengthening collaboration to support the development of football in Egypt. In a phone call, Egypt's Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouli extended a warm welcome to Infantino. During the call, Madbouli thanked the FIFA president for choosing Egypt as a destination for his family vacation, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Youth and Sports on Saturday. This came during a meeting between Sobhi and Infantino, in the presence of Abu Rida. 'Choosing Egypt to spend the holiday reflects the international community's growing trust in Egypt as a premier tourist destination,' Sobhi said, adding that 'this underscores the country's safety, stability, and its prominent position on the global tourism map.' 'Infantino's visit is a testament to the appeal of Egypt's modern cities, especially New Alamein which offers world-class amenities and infrastructure, making it an attractive option for visitors from around the world,' Sobhi added. Infantino took to his official Instagram account to reflect on the call he received from Madbouli. 'It was an honour to have a call with the Prime Minister of Egypt, Mostafa Madbouli, and to meet my good friend, the Minister of Youth and Sport, Ashraf Sobhi, alongside FIFA council member and President of the Egyptian Football Association Hani Abu Rida, in Alamein, on Egypt's northern coast, one of the true jewels of the Mediterranean. 'We are working closely together to support the development of football in Egypt- a country where passion for our beautiful game runs deep. You only have to look at the incredible support for clubs like Al Ahly, especially from their fans during the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, to see just how much football means here. 'Egypt is a proud football nation and it's always that energy and commitment [I see] first-hand.' Also, this week the EFA had the opportunity to 'Give every talent a chance' through the FIFA Talent Development Schemes (TDS) programme. Youth development enables each Member Association (MA) to reach its full potential through the TDS where 25 Egyptian female coaches participated in cooperation between FIFA and the Egyptian Football Association, hosted by the National Teams Centre in Cairo. According to FIFA, the conclusion of the first phase of the FIFA TDS data clearly showed that talent development has a positive impact upon later success, both domestically and internationally. A concerted effort from all stakeholders (FIFA, confederations, associations, leagues and clubs) to influence the key factors of talent development could lead to a higher competitive balance. The top MAs appear to be supporting talent development throughout the pathway to a greater extent. However, it is clear that there is still work to be done to truly give every talent a chance. 'Everything is connected in our sport. We are all connected. Giving every talent a chance requires everyone to play their part,' Infantino said. The first phase included Cairo, Giza, and Qalyubia, with junior men's tests taking place on Monday and Tuesday, while women's tests were held on Wednesday. The second phase was held in Port Said on Friday. The tests were attended by Mustafa Azzam, Executive Director of the Egyptian Football Association, and Alaa Nabil, technical director of the association and project supervisor. Also present were Ahmed Al-Gohari, project director, Atef Attia, general coordinator, and a FIFA delegation, which included Anthony Baffoe, director of the Talent Project in Africa, and Laban Scott Lippi, Harry Varley, and Leszczew Georgiowski, all talent scouts. The project includes technical directors Rami Adel and Youssef Fawaz, along with Bassem Khairat, the youth goalkeeper coach, and technical directors Mustafa Mounir and Nashwa Sharabi, in addition to Rama Gweili, the girls' coordinator. The project also included talent scouts Mohamed Al-Yamani, Ahmed Abdel-Latif, and Sherif Al-Tala'a. The TDS project aims to discover talented players at the age group (born in 2011) and provide them with technical, health and physical support under the auspices of the Egyptian Football Association, through the association's technical director and the best training cadres. On the other hand, the EFA received news that the FIFA Referees Committee has announced the list of female referees participating in the Women's World Cup in Morocco, including Egyptian international assistant referee Yara Atef, who has previously represented Egyptian referees in numerous African and international tournaments, most notably the Women's Africa Cup of Nations, the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, and the FIFA Women's World Cup in the Dominican Republic. Furthermore, Egyptian referees kicked off in Alexandria in preparation for the launch of the new Premier League. The referees were divided into three groups. The first group included 32 referees (18 field referees and 14 assistants). * A version of this article appears in print in the 7 August, 2025 edition of Al-Ahram Weekly Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Chelle surprised by TotalEnergies CHAN intensity, urges Nigeria to bounce back
Nigeria's CHAN head coach, Eric Chelle, has hailed the exceptional intensity and quality of the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) after his side suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to defending champions Senegal in their Group C opener. The result may have been disappointing for Nigeria, who returned to the competition after a four-year absence, but Chelle was quick to underline his admiration for the tournament's high tempo and quality—elements he admitted took him by surprise. 'I am surprised about the intensity,' Chelle said, reflecting on a match that showcased the technical levels of both teams. 'There are a lot of good teams and a lot of quality. I think the pitches are very good, allowing for fast-paced and technical football. This would be a great CHAN competition.' Nigeria had missed out on the past two editions of the CHAN (2020 and 2022) despite previously strong showings in 2014, 2016, and 2018. Now back in the fold, Chelle's side entered the match with high hopes but fell short against a well-drilled Senegalese team, who scored the decisive goal in the 75th minute. The coach was forthright in his post-match analysis, describing the goal as 'self-inflicted' due to a defensive error and lamenting his side's lack of urgency, especially in the first half. 'Senegal deserved their victory because we just played 20 minutes in the second half,' he said. 'During the first half, I didn't recognize my team. Senegal was more aggressive than us, they put more intensity, and it's very normal for them to go ahead and win.' While acknowledging his team's improved performance in the second half, Chelle stressed that short bursts of quality were not enough to win matches at this level. 'When we started playing, we created chances, kept the ball well, and showed glimpses of our attacking flair,' he said. 'But we need to be more ambitious and aggressive, to press higher up the pitch and win the ball back quickly.' The defeat leaves Nigeria in a precarious position, needing a win in their second group game against Sudan to remain in contention for qualification. Chelle emphasized the importance of a shift in mentality and a more proactive approach if his side is to bounce back. 'We need to change our state of mind,' he said. 'We need to be more aggressive, to dominate possession and create scoring opportunities. You simply can't win matches if you lose all duels, especially in the midfield. We created no chances in the first half. We cannot let that happen.' Chelle's honesty extended to his own role in the result, as he accepted responsibility for the team's performance and pledged to rally his squad for the crucial clash ahead. 'I don't want to fault my players. I take responsibility,' he said. 'I must remind my players that this is football. We should have a warrior's mentality, to fight for every ball and never give up. I hope we win the second game.' Despite the opening setback, Chelle remained optimistic about Nigeria's chances of advancing, pointing to the team's potential and the lessons learned from facing one of the tournament favourites. 'In the first presser, I said Senegal was the big team, and equally said we'll like to take it game after game,' he concluded. 'In a week's time, we need to win the second game if we want to give ourselves hope.' As Nigeria prepares for their must-win tie against Sudan, Chelle's words echo the challenge ahead—not only to win, but to meet the intensity and standard already set by the competition's front-runners.

Gueye steals spotlight, seeks to guide Senegal closer to knockout stage
Published: Wednesday, 06 August 2025 Senegal's flying winger Libasse Gueye has attributed his individual brilliance to collective teamwork after a dazzling display earned him the TotalEnergies CHAN Man of the Match award in their narrow but significant 1-0 win over rivals Nigeria. While Christian Gomis struck the 75th-minute winner that secured three valuable points, it was Gueye's electric performance on the left flank that lit up the tie at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024. The 21-year-old tormented Nigeria's right-back Taiwo Abdulrafiu throughout the match, exploiting defensive lapses with clever movement and technical flair that constantly put the Super Eagles under pressure. Despite not finding the net himself, Gueye's influence was undeniable and vital in breaking down Nigeria's defence in what turned into a high-tempo and physically gruelling contest. His impact was so pronounced that head coach Souleymane Diallo only replaced him deep into added time, in the 90+3rd minute, bringing on Mbaye Ndiaye to shore up the defence and preserve the lead. Gueye's performance didn't go unnoticed, as tournament sponsors TotalEnergies handed him the Man of the Match award — a personal milestone he chose to share with the rest of the squad. 'Though it was a tough game, we respected the instructions of the coach and showed great hunger,' said Gueye after the match. 'I am happy with the efforts of my teammates because we worked a lot on the game, and today it paid off. I am elated with the result.' Senegal, the reigning CHAN champions, showed composure and tactical maturity to edge out a resilient Nigerian side. With both nations fielding squads comprised solely of home-based players, the rivalry carried extra weight and regional pride, adding to the intensity of the clash. Gueye's standout display signals the emergence of another exciting prospect from Senegal's domestic football pipeline — and strengthens the team's title defence ambitions. More importantly, the result places Senegal in a commanding position ahead of their second group fixture. Next up for Gueye and his teammates is a crucial clash against Congo on August 12 at the Amaan Stadium. The stakes are clear: avoid defeat, and Senegal will take a major step toward securing a spot in the knockout stages of CHAN PAMOJA 2024.
