Thailand, Cambodia clash in at least 9 locations along border
The Royal Thai Army (RTA) said clashes took place in two spots in Ubon Ratchathani province, four in Si Sa Ket and another three in Surin.
The flashpoints were:
Anmah pass, Nam Yuen district, Ubon Ratchathani
Chong Bok pass, Nam Yuen district, Ubon Ratchathani
Phu Makhua, Kantharaklak district, Si Sa Ket
Sam Tae pass, Kantharaklak district, Si Sa Ket
Ta Thao pass, Kantharaklak district, Si Sa Ket
Wat Kaew Sikha Khiri Sawara, Kantharaklak district, Si Sa Ket
Chong Chom pass, Kab Choeng district, Surin
Ta Khai ruins, Phanom Dong Rak district, Surin
Ta Muan Thom ruins, Phanom Dong Rak district, Surin
Cambodia deployed soldiers and tanks and used artillery and rockets in the fight, the RTA said. They were countered by Thai tanks, heavy weapons and soldiers.
There were no reports of clashes in the border area in Buri Ram as of noon on Friday.
'The enemy has reinforced a large number of troops, forcing Thailand to adjust the strategy,' the Thai army said, referring to the battlefield near Ta Kwai.
The Royal Thai Air Force reportedly sent F-16 fighters to warn the Cambodian army in the border area in Kantharakal not to use its heavy weaponry to target civilians.
Houses in four tambons in Phanom Dong Rak district in Surin, one in Nam Yuen district in Ubon Ratchathani and three in Kantharalak district in Si Sa Ket were damaged with no casualties reported.
Thailand has moved about 63,000 more people to shelters located further from the border to avert rocket attacks by Cambodia, taking the total to at least 130,000, according to the RTA.

Thai goods bound for the United States will be subject to a 19% tax, starting on Thursday. The rate, markedly lower than the 36% initially set by the US, was announced after the government agreed to eliminate import duties on over 10,000 items imported from the US. Dr Prommin noted that the 19% rate puts Thailand on a level playing field with regional exporters. 'We're no longer at a disadvantage. In fact, we might even have a slight edge over some countries. We're now in a fair position to compete in the same markets.' Looking ahead, the government will shift focus to economic restructuring, as outlined by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira. On the legal side, Dr Prommin confirmed that once the agreement has passed a special cabinet session and a consensus on the negotiation framework has been reached, it will be submitted to parliament for approval. 'There is a legal process that must be followed. Once we are at that stage, everything will proceed transparently and in line with the law,' he said.

Thailand hopes key meeting will ease border tensions with Cambodia
Thailand expects border tensions with Cambodia to improve after the General Border Committee (GBC) meeting planned for later this week. Officials of both countries started talks on Monday, preparing an agenda for talks between the two defence ministers on Thursday. Deputy Defence Minister Gen Nattaphon Narkphanit, who will represent Thailand in the absence of a defence minister, said he was hoping the military confrontation along the border would ease up after the much-anticipated meeting in Kuala Lumpur. Thai negotiators will give priority to protecting the national interest and carefully consider any counter offers from Cambodia, he said. Thai officials convened in the Malaysian capital on Monday for negotiations with their Cambodian counterparts on the framework for the ministerial level meeting on Thursday. The Thai team included representatives from the armed forces, police, and the Defence and Foreign ministries, according to the Defence Ministry. The GBC meeting is aimed at ending the border clashes, which briefly continued even after the two prime ministers agreed to a ceasefire at a meeting in Putrajaya, the Malaysian administrative capital, on July 28. Malaysia stepped in as current chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, with the United States and China also represented at the one-day meeting. The two countries have traded a war of words since the truce announcement. The clashes killed 17 Thai civilians and injured 38, damaged or affected the work of 20 main hospitals and 149 smaller health promotion hospitals, according to the Public Health Ministry. Fifteen Thai soldiers have been killed and scores more injured since the armed conflict began on July 24. Gen Nattaphon said Thai negotiators will end the preparatory talks on Wednesday and their conclusions will be sent to the National Security Council for approval before he meets with Cambodian Defence Minister Gen Tea Seiha on Thursday.

Scholarships offered to families of fallen Thai soldiers
Thai universities and schools have offered full scholarships to the families of Thai soldiers who died or were wounded during the five days of fighting between Thailand and Cambodia. Mahasarakham University of the Northeast announced the scholarships on Friday, in honour and gratitude for the bravery of the soldiers fighting for the country. The educational support was offered to the wives and children of the soldiers who were killed or injured in the clashes. The full scholarhips cover elementary and secondary grades at the university's Demonstration School and bachelor, masters and doctoral programmes, according to university president Prayuk Sriwilai. (continues below) On Saturday, the director of the Ramathibodi School of Nursing, Poolsuk Janepanish Visudtibhan, posted on her Facebook after seeing a picture of a 13-year-old girl crying over a funeral picture of her father, who died in the fighting. 'If you want to be a nurse in the future, all teachers at our school are willing to accept you without an examination,' she wrote to the girl, Pinmook, a daughter of SM1 Teerayut Sijuijai, who died in the Chong Ahn Ma clash in Ubon Ratchathani. 'We believe you have DNA full of sacrifice like your father, which will make you a good nurse too,' Ms Poolsak said. The Thai top ranked Chulalongkorn University on Sunday announced its full scholarships for families of officers and civilians who died during the clashes. 'The scholarships were granted to honour their sacrifice and to support people who lost loved ones,' the university said. The National Institute of Development Administration also offered scholarships for those families who wish to study at the Graduate School of Public Administration.
