
Brain training for school kids: A boost for learning? – DW – 07/14/2025
The years of educational disruption during the COVID pandemic have had profound effects on children's learning outcomes, worldwide. Children from poorer socioeconomic backgrounds have been particularly affected.
Research suggests that children's cognitive skills are declining — reflected in kids having weaker memories, attention spans, and diminished flexible thinking skills.
So, some experts are suggesting that specialized 'brain training' programs be used in schools to improve those skills.
Cognitive scientists are interested in testing whether these will help train children's working memory, with brain training programs that present kids with puzzles and other challenges.
The working memory is the mind's staging area, where information is processed in the short term. It's the bit that you use when you're struggling through a math or logic problem — the part of our mind that can feel blocked when you can't find a solution.
"The challenge is that some children's working memories are limited, and it's a huge bottleneck for learning," said Thomas Perry, a social scientist and education researcher at the University of Warwick, UK.
Brain training programs claim to boost these brain skills.
One recent study claimed to show that a 12-hour working memory training program had improved children's focus, IQ and long-term academic outcomes.
The study followed 572 German schoolchildren aged 6–7 years over three years. One group of children completed a 12-hour-long working memory training over a period of 5 weeks. The kids who did the training missed out on an equivalent time of mathematics or German classes. Meanwhile, a control group of children had regular classes.
They found that children who completed the training had increases in working memory capacity up to a year after the training.
Three years after the program, researchers found that the trained children had 16% higher chances of entering an academic track at secondary school — 46% instead of the average 30%.
"I was surprised by the breadth of benefits, not just for working memory and closely related academic subjects. Even broader capacities such as IQ and self-control improved," said Torkel Klingberg, a neuroscientist at Karolinska Institute, Sweden, who designed the intervention but was not involved in the study.

The children in the study trained working memory through a series of different cognitive tasks, including visuospatial tests to see whether they would remember where things were on a screen.
They used a publicly available app called Nuroe, which the study authors claim can help strengthen children's core learning system in the brain.
Perry, who was not involved in the research, said the study correctly measured how working memory training mediated academic performance.
However, he said, "We can't make grand claims based on one study. We need to verify the results with large scale efficacy trials in different schools and with different teachers."
Already, however, he said there were indications that teachers who thought boosting IQ and critical thinking were important were teaching less substantive information related to the curriculum.
"This is damaging for some kids. For example, disadvantaged kids often aren't immersed in reading at home, so they really need dedicated time at school for learning to read. Replacing reading time with working memory training might be harmful in the long term."

Perry was involved in a large-scale review of over 400 studies testing different cognitive training programs in schools. The review, conducted by the UK's Education Endowment Foundation, found that studies testing cognitive training in research settings (not in classrooms) tend to show impressive effects on kids' learning. But when they are tested in classrooms, they tend to show limited results.
"There's a picture emerging from the research is that some studies show working memory training is potentially effective in certain settings, but other studies show no effect at all," Perry said.
"We don't have this critical body of studies to say that working memory training is a good thing to teach students, or how to do it," Perry said.
Large-scale brain training programs in US schools, for example, showed no or very small effects on kids' educational outcomes.
Meta-analyses have found that working memory training programs do not improve overall cognitive performance or measures of intelligence in the long term.
Some experts have said that working memory training programs do not generalize to "real-world" cognitive skills.
"Critical thinking skills, for example, are based on knowledge that's built up over time. If you have critical thinking, say, about science, it doesn't necessarily translate to other subjects," said Perry.
"So, I doubt we can double kids' working memory and make them suddenly superintelligent."

That's why exercise is recommended as one of several treatments for people with sleep disorders. Studies have shown that moderate-intensity aerobic exercise improves sleep among patients with insomnia. That's why drinking coffee in the afternoon or evening can reduce the duration of sleep by around 45 minutes, according to one meta-analysis. To avoid reductions in total sleep time, the researchers of that analysis recommended consuming coffee no later than 9 hours before bedtime. Another big culprit of sleep disturbances is screen use before sleep. One study found an hour of screen use in bed increases your risk of insomnia by 59% and lowers sleep duration by an average of 24 minutes per night. There's a common belief blue light emitted from screens tricks the body into thinking it's time to wake up. But this isn't quite right. This requires you to place the tip of your tongue against the ridge behind your upper teeth, exhale completely, then inhale through your nose for four counts. Then hold your breath for seven counts and exhale slowly through the mouth for eight counts. Advocates say this breathing method can calm a person down in just a few cycles, helping bring about sleep quicker, especially when anxious or stressed. But does the evidence really say it works? A small number of low-quality studies do suggest positive effects like improved heart rate and blood pressure regulation, and reduced anxiety. However, there is little scientific research to back this up, or verify its long-term benefits. 40 deaths from Sudan cholera outbreak in 1 week, says MSF – DW – 08/15/2025
A unprecedented cholera outbreak in Sudan has killed 40 people in one week, says MSF. Civil war is worsening the crisis by cutting off water, healthcare, and humanitarian aid access. Cholera is spreading rapidly in Sudan's Darfur region, killing 40 people over the past week alone, medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said in a report. MSF teams have treated over 2,300 cholera patients during the last seven days, according to the charity. It blamed the rapid spread of the life-threatening diarrhoeal disease on water shortages and a collapsed health care system, which have left communities vulnerable amid an ongoing civil war in Sudan. Fighting between the Sudanese military, its allies, and rival paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has killed more than 40,000 people, displaced as many as 12 million, caused disease outbreaks and pushed many to the brink of famine. Darfur Governor Mini Arko Minawi told DW that the outbreak was largely concentrated in areas under RSF occupation. "Those suffering from cholera are located outside the government's service areas, with most of them living in areas controlled by the so-called RSF which have taken over these areas but are unable to provide services there," Minawi said. "These forces and their commanders have no knowledge how to provide services or how to govern." Around 100,000 cases have been reported since July 2024, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), which describes cholera as a "disease of poverty," because it spreads where there is poor sanitation and a lack of clean water. "Poor access to water, the destruction of health centers and hospitals, a considerable weakening of the population's health, and a decline in the immune systems is making people vulnerable to cholera," said Jacky Mamou, president of the Collectif Urgence Darfour, a French advocacy coalition that raise awareness about the humanitarian crisis in Sudan. Sudan's civil war has also led to massive population displacements into camps that are struggling to accommodate them. According to Rodrigue Alitanou from the Alliance for International Medical Action (ALIMA), a humanitarian medical NGO, diseases are spreading due to poor hygiene, difficulties in accessing drinking water, and overcrowding, as hundreds of thousands of people are gathered together in small geographical areas. World's first humanoid robot games begin in China – DW – 08/15/2025
More or less human-like robots played soccer, table tennis, ran, danced and, often, fell over at the kickoff of the first humanoid robot games in China. More than 500 humanoid robots in 280 teams from 16 countries are competing in 26 events ranging from soccer and boxing to sorting medicine and cleaning up at the first World Humanoid Robot Games. Three days of competitions began in Beijing, China, on Thursday evening as the country steps up efforts to develop robots powered by artificial intelligence. "We come here to play and to win. But we are also interested in research," said Max Polter, a member of the HTWK Robots football team from Germany, affiliated with Leipzig University of Applied Sciences, told Reuters news agency. "You can test a lot of interesting, new and exciting approaches in this contest. If we try something and it doesn't work, we lose the game," Polter said. "That's sad, but it is better than investing a lot of money into a product that fails." The robots crashed into each other and toppled over repeatedly during football matches, while another fell over mid-sprint during running events. The AFP news agency reported that one of the fastest robots finished a 1,500-meter race in 6:29:37 — well off the current human record of 3:26:00. At the kung fu competition, a child-sized robot resembling one from the popular Transformer series tried a complicated move only to fall on its face and spin on the floor in an attempt to get back up. The crowd, however, cheered happily. Chinese officials made humanoids the "center of their national strategy," the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) wrote in a paper published Thursday. "The government wants to showcase its competence and global competitiveness in this field of technology," it added. In March, China announced plans for a one-trillion-yuan fund (€119 billion, $139 billion) to support technology startups, including those in robotics and AI. Joost Weerheim, part of the Dutch five-a-side robot football team, told AFP he was impressed by the skill of China's teams. "I think right now if they are not already the world leader, they are very, very quickly becoming it," he said.
