Prisoners refurbish Jersey harbour benches

Yahoo30-03-2025
Benches across Jersey's harbours are being refurbished by prisoners.
Ports of Jersey is working with the States of Jersey Prison Service on the first phase of the project which will see work on 80-100 benches around the island's harbours restored.
They said it would cost £7,500 for materials and paying the prisoners at HMP La Moye, and if it proved a success a rolling plan of works for all 160 of the harbour's benches could begin.
Historic harbours manager Mark Byrne said it used to take the team a week or more to restore a bench and so he asked the prison service whether it could help.
Mr Byrne said: "It takes a week to ten days to refurbish each bench which is slower than we would like, so we approached the prison service to see if this project would interest them as part of their rehabilitation work with prisoners.
"They were really interested, and we took it from there."
Mr Byrne said he buys supplies for the prisoners to use and moves the benches to and from HMP La Moye Prison.
The inmates then fix legs, clean stainless steel, paint cast iron sections and polish the memorial plaques.
The prison's manager of vocational training Peter Gould said: "The project provides purposeful activity for prisoners, encouraging great teamwork, determination in their work and compassion for what these benches mean to others."
Anne Pryke said she is pleased with the refurbishment of a bench placed at Rozel Harbour in memory of her husband, Roger.
She told Mr Gould: "Thank you so much for sorting out the bench, it is amazing and such a great asset.
"I'm so very pleased."

Princess Josephine of Denmark, 14, Makes Surprise Decision About Her Future

The Danish Royal House said that King Frederik's daughter was making the move "at her own request"NEED TO KNOW Princess Josephine of Denmark has announced a change in her school plans The update came from the Danish Royal House on Aug. 11 Princess Josephine, 14, is the first of King Frederik and Queen Mary's four kids to make this movePrincess Josephine of Denmark is charting her own royal destiny, starting in the classroom. On Aug. 11, the Danish Royal House announced that the youngest daughter of King Frederik and Queen Mary has chosen to enroll in a new school for the upcoming year. The move marks a big change for Princess Josephine, as she has attended Kildegård Private School since 2023. The news was shared in a statement titled "The education and schooling of the royal children," which featured updates about the plans for all four of King Frederik and Queen Mary's children for the near future. The royal couple is parents to Crown Prince Christian, 19, Princess Isabella, 18, and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, 14. "HRH The Crown Prince continues his education in the Armed Forces, while the Royal Couple'sother three children begin a new school year," the statement began, detailing that Crown Prince Christian will head back to Antvorskov Barracks in Slagelse to complete his military training at a Lieutenant's Training Course. Meanwhile, Princess Isabella will continue her upper secondary education at ØregårdGymnasium, where Crown Prince Christian graduated from in June 2024. Isabella is expected to graduate in the summer of 2026, becoming an alum of the school her brother, father and uncle Prince Joachim all attended! While Prince Vincent will continue his education at Tranegårdsskolen, completing his 8th grade year at the same school he has attended since 2017, his twin is making moves. "HRH Princess Josephine has chosen, at her own request, to continue her education in the 8th grade at Spir Efterskole," the statement said. Spir Efterskole is a boarding school in Jutland, which means the young princess will be attending a school about three hours away from her parents' main base of Frederik VIII's Palace in Amalienborg, Copenhagen. According to Royal Central, Princess Josephine's school switch marks a milestone among her siblings as she becomes the first to live away from home for her education. King Frederik and Queen Mary's twins both enrolled at Tranegårdskolen in Hellerup in August 2017 when they were 6, and Prince Vincent has gone to school there since. His twin sister, meanwhile, made a move to Kildegård Private School, also in Hellerup, in August 2023, making the change for 6th grade. Like many royal parents of their generation, King Frederik and Queen Mary prioritize their children's education and balance the spotlight on them with plenty of family time. A furry mother and daughter duo have arrived at their new home in Jersey Zoo. The Trinity-based site said the giant otters, called Alexandra and Fia, had come to the zoo from Yorkshire Wildlife Park and would be living in its South American House. A Facebook post from the zoo said giant otters were classified as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List due to issues including habitat loss, water pollution and illegal hunting. Bosses at the zoo said they were "delighted" to have them join the site, adding their species had long, powerful tails and were speedy swimmers. Prince William and Princess Kate Butting Heads Over Plans to Send Their Kids to Boarding School

Princess Kate is losing her battle to keep Prince George from getting shipped off to a snooty boarding school — and palace insiders fear the thought of being separated from her first-born son may be too much for the fragile cancer survivor to endure. A royal source reveals that future monarch Prince William, 43, wants his 12-year-old heir to be educated at William's alma mater, Eton College, and insiders expect Kate's hardheaded husband will get his way … and George will be sent to the school in September 2026. 'I think Kate is really sad because she doesn't want him to go away,' the source says. 'She's very nervous, and she wants to spend more time with him.' In 2024, the Princess of Wales, 43, revealed that she was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer after planned abdominal surgery, but she was in remission following chemotherapy. However, insiders are concerned that skeletal Kate could still be grappling with the effects of her grueling treatment. The palace source predicts that George's absence from the family's quaint home at Adelaide Cottage in Windsor will 'take a toll on her physical health. She might feel guilty in a way. The past few years have been filled with a lot of lows because of her illness, and I'm sure she just wants to be with her family as much as she can. When George goes away, she will not get that chance, and she undoubtedly will not be happy with that.' Courtiers also fear that Kate may be overcome with worries for George's safety. 'In this day and age of social media,' explains the expert, 'she is concerned about George's privacy, and since he'll be away at school, she won't have eyes on him. That will most likely tear her apart inside to know that she's not there to protect him.' Making matters worse, insiders say the couple's 10-year-old daughter, Princess Charlotte, will also likely enroll in a boarding school two years after George, and their youngest, 7-year-old Prince Louis, may follow in their footsteps! 'If Kate is not close to George or any of her children,' says the source, 'it could cause a lot of anxiety for her. And she doesn't need to be dealing with anxiety right now.'
