Project launched to test new tech that sends text messages as they are typed
NEW TECHNOLOGY THAT allows people to receive text messages as they are typed has been introduced for emergency situations. 'Real-time texts' often improve the digital communication experience of people who are deaf or hard-of hearing. It allows mobile phone users to see messages come through, letter-by-letter. Those with the technology enabled on their smartphones can use it by calling someone else's number and selecting the real-time text option. It is typically used by people who are deaf when contacting emergency services. Advertisement The introduction is one of the many measures included in EU directives which seek to make the use of technology more accessible for everyone, including those with additional needs. It has been in place in other countries for a number of years. Vodafone has announced the technology today, which will allow their customers to communicate with 999 operators, through real-time texts, on Apple and Android devices. Communications minister Patrick O'Donovan and CEO of national deaf charity Chime, Mark Byrne, have welcomed the introduction of the service. Mark Byrne the hero as Cobh suffer last-gasp defeat
LOI First Division: Treaty United 2 Cobh Ramblers 1 Cobh Ramblers' hopes of landing a First Division title have been dealt a blow following a 2-1 defeat to Treaty United at the Markets Field. Mark Byrne's strike minutes from time proved decisive as Treaty emerged victorious and the Rams were left to rue numerous missed chances. It's a missed opportunity for Cobh who could've trimmed the gap between themselves and leaders Dundalk, especially after the Lilywhites suffered defeat to Bray Wanderers. Sloppiness from Cobh almost gifted the hosts the lead two minutes in. Lee Devitt intercepted Shane Griffin's pass before curling his shot wide from inside the box. Excellent goalkeeping from Corey Chambers denied Cobh the opening goal on the stroke of half-time. Niall O'Keeffe collected Shane Griffin's corner kick and his volleyed effort was repelled by the Treaty shot stopper in impressive fashion. Cobh fell behind five minutes into the second half. Connor Wilson scored with a first-time effort after collecting Colin Conroy's perfectly-weighted cross inside the box. The visitors restored parity on 57 minutes as Cian Murphy scored his seventh goal of the season. The striker collected a long ball and calmly fired low to the net beyond the onrushing Corey Chambers. Cian Murphy could've added a second goal for Cobh on 74 minutes; his glancing header went wide after connecting with Cian Baragry's right-wing gross. Cobh threatened to score again six minutes later. John O'Donovan teed up Whelan but the latter couldn't direct his diving header on target. Brian Cunningham came on for his Treaty debut midway through the second half and was the architect for the winning goal three minutes from time. He found fellow substitute Mark Byrne unmarked inside the box and the latter found the top corner of the net with a curling shot. Joe Hanson could've embellished Treaty's victory right at the death, however his 20-yard effort trickled wide. Treaty held on for a precious win nonetheless.

First half goals see Wexford return to winning ways against Treaty United
WEXFORD FC 2 TREATY UTD 0 Two first half goals saw Wexford return to winning ways with the three points keeping them very much in the promotion play-off spot as Treaty United hit rock bottom in this Division 1 game at Ferrycarrig Park. Wexford had played nearly all of the football through a one-sided opening forty-five minutes as they practically camped inside the Treaty half, with the Shannonsiders showing little in the way of attacking flair. It came as no surprise when the home side took the lead as early as the ninth minute. And the goal was something special as Kaylem Harnett floated a superb ball from the left flank across the face of goal and into the opposite corner of the net. The Treaty response failed to materialise with their solitary threat up front coming from Mark Byrne. After further pressure, the host eventually hit their second goal. A long crossfield ball from James Crawford picked out Mikie Rowe, who cut in from the left before beating keeper Corey Chambers at his near post with a powerful strike. Treaty tried to retrieve the situation before the interval with Mark Byrne getting their first direct shot on target after forty minutes but Paul Martin was equal to the task. The game restarted with Wexford continuing to press forward but through the second period both sides struggled to create a clear chance on goal as the game petered out. Wexford should have increased their lead in additional time but sub Calum Flynn saw his header from a few metres go over the top with only the keeper to beat. Wexford: P Martin, J Crawford, K Harnett (O Ramsay 72),J Lyons (F Wasilewski 72), J Lyons, D Levingston, Z abada, R Butler, R Kelly (C Flynn) 75), D Larkin, A Dobbs, M Rowe. Prisoners refurbish Jersey harbour benches
Benches across Jersey's harbours are being refurbished by prisoners. Ports of Jersey is working with the States of Jersey Prison Service on the first phase of the project which will see work on 80-100 benches around the island's harbours restored. They said it would cost £7,500 for materials and paying the prisoners at HMP La Moye, and if it proved a success a rolling plan of works for all 160 of the harbour's benches could begin. Historic harbours manager Mark Byrne said it used to take the team a week or more to restore a bench and so he asked the prison service whether it could help. Mr Byrne said: "It takes a week to ten days to refurbish each bench which is slower than we would like, so we approached the prison service to see if this project would interest them as part of their rehabilitation work with prisoners. "They were really interested, and we took it from there." Mr Byrne said he buys supplies for the prisoners to use and moves the benches to and from HMP La Moye Prison. The inmates then fix legs, clean stainless steel, paint cast iron sections and polish the memorial plaques. The prison's manager of vocational training Peter Gould said: "The project provides purposeful activity for prisoners, encouraging great teamwork, determination in their work and compassion for what these benches mean to others." Anne Pryke said she is pleased with the refurbishment of a bench placed at Rozel Harbour in memory of her husband, Roger. She told Mr Gould: "Thank you so much for sorting out the bench, it is amazing and such a great asset. "I'm so very pleased." Follow BBC Jersey on X and Facebook.
