Yahoo07-08-2025
Rep. Cory Mills has been in the news for a variety of reasons since he was first elected in 2023.
Most recently, Mills was sued for owing over $85,000 in back rent for his Washington, D.C. apartment and accused of in a Florida sheriff's office complaint made by Miss United States of threatening his ex-girlfriend to release intimate images and videos after she broke up with him
Who is Cory Mills? Where is the seventh district in Florida?
Rep. Cory Mills, 45, is a Floridian politician, businessman, and Army veteran, currently serving as a member of the 119th Congress. He has represented Florida's 7th congressional district, which includes Seminole and southern Volusia counties, since 2023.
He is a Florida native, born in Winter Haven and raised in Auburndale. He went to college at Florida State College in Jacksonville, earning an Associate of Arts degree in liberal arts and sciences.
According to his website, he served in the Army with the 82nd Airborne Division and Joint Special Operations Command from 1999 through 2003. After serving, he co-founded Pacem Solution International LLC and Pacem Defense LLC, which his website says supported risk management assessments, intelligence collection, and security for media.
In November 2022, he defeated Democratic nominee Karen Green in the general election with 58.5% of the vote.
What are some of the reported scandals involving Mills?
Here are five scandals Mills has been involved with since 2023:
Questions around Mills' Bronze Star
Rep. Cory Mills was accused of lying about earning a Bronze Star medal. The Bronze Star Medal is the fourth-highest military decoration for valor in the US military.
According to a document obtained by NOTUS, Mills rushed to the aid of two soldiers who had been struck, applied emergency life-saving care at the 'great risk to his own life,' helped evacuate them and saved their lives. However, those present told the outlet that they do not remember him being present during the rescue.
'From what I understand about Mills is he might have been in the unit. I don't remember him being involved in the medevac,' fellow soldier Alan Babin said. 'To be fair, I was worried about the patients. I don't remember him, and from what I understand, other people don't remember him.'
Mills denied accusations of misrepresenting his four-year military career, sharing documents with The Daytona Beach News-Journal, he says, that prove his record of heroic Army service. However, there are errors on Mills' DD 214 indicating he had 0 days of foreign service, which he says is why he's drawn skeptics.
'I'm tired of the slander and the defamation," Mills said last year. "I ran for office to be able to serve the American people, not to defend something I did 20 years ago over and over and over.'
House committee claims Mills misrepresented his financial interests
The House Ethics Committee stated in December 2024 that it had "extended the matter regarding Mills" that had been provided by the Office of Congressional Ethics, an independent, non-partisan entity charged with receiving and reviewing allegations of misconduct concerning House members and staff.
According to the report, it says Rep. Mills/his campaign committee might have:
Omitted or misrepresented required information in his financial disclosure statements.
Accepted excessive contributions in the form of personal loans and contributions that may not have derived from Rep. Mills's personal funds.
Entered into, enjoyed, or held contracts with federal agencies.
Accepted, through his campaign committee Cory Mills for Congress in-kind contributions in the form of credit not extended in the ordinary course of business.
Accepted, through his campaign committee, a contribution that was not lawfully made pursuant to the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 by receiving credit not extended in the ordinary course of business.
As of August 2025, these claims are still under investigation.
Investigated in assault of former girlfriend
Washington, D.C., Metro police investigated Mills in February 2025 in a report of an assault on his girlfriend, Sarah Raviani, at the time. She called authorities about an assault in the Washington, D.C., penthouse they shared.
Raviani later denied any assault, saying bruising and marks on her arms were the result of eczema and a long weekend in Dubai. Mills was never charged in the matter and denied wrongdoing.
Faced eviction from his Washington, D.C., luxury apartment
Mills was sued by his landlord in the District of Columbia Superior Court in July who claimed in the court filing that the congressman owed more than $85,000 in back rent.
Mills settled with his landlord on Aug. 4. Before that, Mills posted what he suggested was proof of his attempt to make payments but they "failed to process." He posted screenshots of emails dated June 17 and July 3.
Accused of sextortion by former Miss United States
Most recently, Miss United States Lindsey Langston has accused Mills, in a complaint to police, of threatening to release sex videos from their time together.
Langston met with Columbia County sheriff's investigators on July 14 and alleged she and Mills had been in a relationship for more than three years, she had broken it off in February, and Mills had suggested he might release nude images and sex videos of her, as well as threaten any of her future romantic partners.
Anthony Sabatini − a Mount Dora attorney who represents Langston − shared several text messages from what appear to be Mills' phone referencing the sex videos.
Mills said in an Aug. 6 statement to The Daytona Beach News-Journal that he has not been made aware of any law enforcement complaint. The complaint was obtained by the USA TODAY Network newspaper.
"Anthony Sabatini is weaponizing the legal system to launch a political attack against the man who beat him in the primary, using his corporate legal office to push a narrative built on lies and flawed legal arguments − all to score political headlines," Mills said.
'These claims are false and misrepresent the nature of my interactions. I have always conducted myself with integrity, both personally and in service to Florida's 7th District," Mills continued.

Trump weaponization czar teases ‘more' developments with Schiff, warns J6 Committee alums to ‘keep an eye on their mailbox'

President Trump's weaponization czar Ed Martin dropped hints that his team may soon take additional investigative actions against Sen. Adam Schiff and members of the since-defunct House Select Jan. 6 Committee who weren't pardoned by former president Joe Biden. Martin, who helms the Justice Department's Weaponization Working Group, took note of the criminal probe of Schiff (D-Calif.) over allegations of mortgage fraud and strongly implied something else is in the works. 'There's a referral from Bill Pulte about mortgage fraud about Adam Schiff. That's publicly discussed. His own lawyers have been out there,' Martin told Fox News' Sunday Morning Futures.' Advertisement 'Now there's more on Adam Schiff.' Martin did not specify what else could be coming down the pike. 3 Ed Martin teased that his weaponization working group has additional investigations into Adam Schiff and the since-defunct Jan. 6 Committee in the works. AP Advertisement 3 Sen. Adam Schiff was one of President Trump's top Democratic adversaries in the House during his first term. REUTERS Back in May, Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director William Pulte referred Schiff to the Justice Department for 'multiple instances' between 2003 and 2019 when the senator allegedly 'falsified bank documents and property records to acquire more favorable loan terms.' This includes accusations that he listed his Maryland home as a primary residence in multiple mortgage refinancing filings despite being an elected member of Congress from California at the time. Some lawmakers have homes in both their states and in the Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia area during their time in Congress. But Pulte alleged that Schiff also sought a similar exemption on a Burbank, Calif., condo that he also dubbed his primary residence. Advertisement In a separate matter, Schiff recently faced surfaced accusations from a former Democratic House Intelligence Committee aide who alleged the then-congressman approved leaks of classified information to harm President Trump during the height of Russiagate. It is unclear if those allegations are what Martin was referencing. DOJ officials concluded Schiff may have had liability protections for those leaks under the speech and debate clause of the Constitution, according to an FBI memo on the accusations obtained by The Post. 'All we're going to do, again, is get to the facts of this and use all the tools that we have in our system,' Martin stressed. 3 Ed Martin inspected Letita James' Brooklyn home last Friday. New York Post Advertisement Last week, Martin was seen in Brooklyn checking out New York Attorney General Letitia James' multi-family residential property that is subject to a mortgage fraud inquiry. Pulte alleged that the AG may have 'falsified bank documents and property records to acquire government-backed assistance and loans and more favorable loan terms.' Similar to the Schiff accusations, Pulte alleged that James declared a Norfolk, Virginia, property purchased in 2023 her 'principal residence' while calling her Brooklyn brownstone she's owned since 2001 her second residence. Beyond Schiff and James, Martin also teased that he is reviewing members of the since-defunct House Select Jan. 6 Committee, despite Biden's sweeping 11th-hour pardon for the panel. 'We're all in that too,' Martin said. 'A lot of people did not get a pardon that were involved in the select committee, and they ought to be keeping an eye on their mailbox, because there's a lot to be asked about.' Martin didn't specify names, but noted that US Attorney General Pam Bondi 'let us loose on' issues of alleged government weaponization.

FBI urged to probe NYC's seedy 'Market of Sweethearts'

Queens activists are demanding the FBI investigate the 'foreign national' crime syndicates turning seedy Roosevelt Avenue into a 'gangland' — claiming the criminals pose a national security threat. 'We request that you initiate an investigation into what we understand are gangs engaging in criminal enterprises including human trafficking, illegal narcotics sales and the mass distribution of fraudulent documents which poses a national security threat,' wrote Rosa Sanchez, head of the Restore Roosevelt Avenue Coalition, and Democratic district leader Hiram Monserrate in an Aug. 14 letter to FBI Director Kash Patel. Federal intervention is required because state and local laws are limited and inadequate to address the problem, the activists said. NY Post 5 Local activists are calling on the FBI to investigate 'foreign national' crime syndicates operating on Roosevelt Avenue. NY Post In their missive, Sanchez and Monserrate thanked the FBI and other agencies in the Trump administration for prosecuting members of migrant gangs — including the Venezuelan-based Tren de Aragua and the 18th Street gang, which regularly extort brothels, beat rivals and sell drugs and phony IDs to finance an illicit network based in El Salvador. Advertisement 'However, both gangs continue to operate in our community and we impress upon you that more needs to be done to keep our community safe,' they told the FBI director. They noted that the NYPD has made more than 500 prostitution-related arrests thus far this year along what is called 'The Market of Sweethearts,' but brothels continue to operate. 5 Suspected sex workers on the sidewalk in the 'Market of Sweethearts' on July 27, 2025. 'Organized crime by both Latino and Chinese foreign nationals continues to wreak havoc in our community,' Sanchez and Monserrate said. 'We urge your agency to respond and rid our community of modern slavery and a dangerous criminal element that operates flagrantly.' They forwarded suspected addresses of brothels to the FBI. In the past year, The Post has exposed the seediness, crime, drug-peddling and illegal vending along the Roosevelt Avenue corridor. Gov. Kathy Hochul last year even dispatched state troopers to assist the NYPD to crack down the lawlessness.

3 Republican-led states are deploying National Guard troops to DC: What to know

The Republican governors of three states are deploying hundreds of National Guard troops to Washington at the request of the administration of President Donald Trump, who has portrayed the city as awash in crime. The announcements on Aug. 16 of troops from hundreds of miles away in West Virginia, South Carolina and Ohio came a day after DC officials and the Trump administration negotiated a deal to keep Mayor Muriel Bowser's appointed police chief, Pamela Smith, in charge of the police department after DC Attorney General Brian Schwalb filed a lawsuit to block the federal takeover of the department. Trump, a Republican, said this week he was deploying hundreds of DC National Guard troops to Washington and temporarily taking over the Democratic-led city's police department to curb what he depicted as a crime and homelessness emergency. Justice Department data, however, showed violent crime in 2024 hit a 30-year low in Washington, a self-governing federal district under the jurisdiction of Congress. West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey's office said in a statement he was deploying 300 to 400 National Guard troops to D.C. in "a show of commitment to public safety and regional cooperation." The statement said he also was providing equipment and specialized training. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster responded to a Pentagon request by announcing that 200 of his state's National Guard troops would be sent. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said he would send 150 military police members in the coming days, adding none of them were "currently serving as law enforcement officers in the state." After the announcements, Mayor Bowser posted on X: "American soldiers and airmen policing American citizens on American soil is #UnAmerican." Troops to other cities? The National Guard serves as a militia that answers to the governors of the 50 states except when called into federal service. The DC National Guard reports directly to the president. Trump, who has suggested he could take similar actions in other Democratic-controlled cities, has sought to expand the powers of the presidency in his second term, inserting himself into the affairs of major banks, law firms and elite universities. In June, Trump ordered 700 Marines and 4,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles, against the wishes of California's Democratic governor, during protests over mass immigration raids by federal officials. South Carolina's McMaster said his troops would immediately return to South Carolina if needed to respond to a possible hurricane or other natural disaster. Hurricane Erin, now northeast of Puerto Rico, has become a catastrophic Category 5 storm that could bring ocean swells to the U.S. East Coast early next week, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. National Guard troops often respond to natural disasters and rarely police US civilians. Drew Galang, a spokesperson for West Virginia's Morrisey, said the state's National Guard received the order to send equipment and personnel to D.C. late on Friday and was working to organize the deployment. The White House said on Aug. 16 that DC National Guard members have conducted patrols on foot and in vehicles around the National Mall and Union Station. The White House said the National Guard troops are not making arrests now and that they may be armed. It is not clear how the administration could deploy National Guard troops elsewhere. A federal judge in San Francisco is expected in the coming weeks to issue a ruling on whether Trump violated the law with the Los Angeles deployments.
