Airdrie snap up former Hamilton Accies defender for Championship charge
Airdrie have signed defender Sean McGinty following his release by Hamilton Accies.
The English-born former Ayr United and Morton stopper left Airdrie's derby rivals via relegation release clause at the end of last summer.
McGinty, 31, brings experience to the Diamonds, but is also working towards his UEFA 'B' licence, with a view to joining the coaching set-up in the near future.
The former Manchester United youth told Airdrie's website: 'I'm absolutely delighted to now be part of the Airdrieonians journey.
'I'm looking forward to working with everyone and adding my commitment, experience and enthusiasm to our team effort in the season that lies ahead.
'The one thing I can promise to everybody, especially the fans, is that I'll give 100 per cent to helping the team be more successful.'
McGinty played 44 times for Hamilton last season, scoring four goals, including in a 2-1 defeat at Airdrie on March 8.
Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe said: 'Sean is a strong leader who has captained the last two clubs he has been at.
'He's aggressive, and being left-sided, he will provide good balance.
'He has an air of authority and is a good communicator, which should help the current squad immensely.
'We're looking forward to working with him when training resumes.'

Tonight's rugby news as Welsh star ends retirement to join hometown club and Springbok great dies
Tonight's rugby news as Welsh star ends retirement to join hometown club and Springbok great dies The latest headlines from Wales and around the world Fry (right) has come out of retirement to sign for Cardiff RFC (Image: Chris Fairweather/Huw Evans Agency) These are your evening rugby headlines on Thursday, August 14. Welsh forward comes out of retirement Former Dragons forward Ben Fry has come out of retirement to join Cardiff RFC, a year on from hanging up his boots. The Cardiff-born back rower represented Wales at age-grade level and made 37 appearances for the Rodney Parade side between 2018 and his release from the region in 2023, before moving to the United States and joining Major League Rugby side the Dallas Jackals, after a brief spell with Merthyr RFC. When the Jackals disbanded ahead of the start of the 2024/25 MLR season, however, Fry retired from rugby - but now he is back in the game after finding a new job in the capital, with Cardiff taking him on board ahead of the new Super Rygbi Cymru campaign. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby The former Wales U20s international was once seen as one of Welsh rugby's rising stars, a player who thrived when things were at their most physical and one that was tipped for higher honours, having endeared himself to the Rodney Parade faithful. Fry spoke to WalesOnline earlier this year about starting work as an estate agent in Bristol, with his career seemingly behind him, but he will now lace up his boots again after joining the Rags. ''It's an absolute privilege to have signed for Cardiff," said the 26-year-old as his signing was confirmed. "I'm Cardiff born and bred, and it's always something that I've wanted to do. The last time I played for Cardiff was for Cardiff Schools under-15s, so to be able to put the jersey back on and represent my home town is an absolute honour. Article continues below 'I finished rugby for a year; one part of it was family, the second part of it was the state of rugby, and the third part was that I was working in Bristol. I've got the itch back to play,' he added as he reflected on why he initially quit the sport. 'Fortunately, I've got a job back in Cardiff and that has given me the opportunity to get back into things. So I reached out to Fishy [Cardiff RFC head coach Dan Fish] and, fortunately enough, he's been kind enough to bring me on board. So I'm really excited about it.' Fish added that he was "delighted" to bring the 6ft 1in former Dragons forward to the club, adding: 'He's a Cardiff boy through and through, and a former captain of Cardiff Schools Rugby where he played alongside the likes of Ben Thomas and Max Llewellyn. 'Ben's experience at professional level, combined with his work rate, physicality, and leadership, makes him a perfect fit for our squad. His know-how and professionalism will be invaluable in helping to develop our young academy boys." On playing in Super Rygbi Cymru for the first time, Fry added: 'I am looking forward to playing in the Super Rygbi Cymru league; it's not something that I've done before. "My last sort of taste of Premiership rugby was in the old sort of framework league, so to see it progressing and just take that next elite step up is definitely something that I am looking to get stuck into and see what's it's all about. 'It's about getting back into something that I love, surrounded by a good group of boys. Representing a City that means so much to me, that's the main part of getting the enjoyment back, getting my competitive edge back and hopefully putting a positive stamp on what's already a successful team.' Springbok great dies Former South Africa international and widely-respected coach Dawie Snyman has died at the age of 76, following an illness. A utility back during his playing days, he won 10 Test caps for the Springboks during the 1970s, playing at both full-back and fly-half. In total, he represented his country on 22 occasions, scoring 86 points. Snyman - whose older brother Jackie also played Test rugby for South Africa - also made 60 appearances for Western Province and went on to become one of the most successful coaches in their history after hanging up his boots. Between 1982 and 1986, he coached the club to five consecutive Currie Cup titles, while they also shared the title with the Bulls in 1989 under his leadership. Snyman went on to coach South Africa at the 1997 Sevens World Cup, with the Blitzboks ultimately losing to Fiji in the final, while he was also involved with the Lions and at Stellenbosch University. Paying tribute to the late player and coach as "one of the greats of South African rugby", SA Rugby president Mark Alexander said: 'Dawie will not only be remembered as a determined player who worked extremely hard and succeeded at international level in two positions, but also as one of the finest coaches South African rugby has known. 'He could have played much longer, but chose instead to invest in the game as a mentor and leader, shaping generations of players with his insight and passion. His contribution to rugby in South Africa is immeasurable. 'It is never easy to lose a member of the South African rugby family," Alexander added. "We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Pam, his daughters Louise, Patse, Pam and Danielle and to their extended family, loved ones and friends during this time of bereavement. "May you find comfort in the legacy of a man who will forever be remembered as one of the greats of South African rugby." O'Connor returns for Wallabies Veteran fly-half James O'Connor has been named to start for Australia against South Africa in the opening round of The Rugby Championship this weekend. The 35-year-old played a Super Rugby season for Crusaders last year and was massively influential in their title win, but has not played Test rugby for the Wallabies since 2022. Now, however, he finds himself back in the starting side to take on the reigning world champions at Ellis Park, with the 64-cap international the only out-and-out fly-half that head coach Joe Schmidt has at his disposal currently. O'Connor is the only change Australia have made to the starting XV that won against the British and Irish Lions in the final Test in Sydney two weeks ago. Schmidt has also opted for a 6-2 split on the bench, with Tate McDermott and Andrew Kellaway providing the firepower for the Wallabies in in the backs. Article continues below Australia side to face South Africa: 15 Tom Wright, 14 Max Jorgensen, 13 Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, 12 Len Ikitau, 11 Dylan Pietsch, 10 James O'Connor, 9 Nic White, 8 Harry Wilson (c), 7 Fraser McReight, 6 Tom Hooper, 5 Will Skelton, 4 Nick Frost, 3 Taniela Tupou, 2 Billy Pollard, 1 James Slipper Replacements: 16 Brandon Paenga-Amosa, 17 Angus Bell, 18 Zane Nonggorr, 19 Jeremy Williams, 20 Langi Gleeson, 21 Nick Champion de Crespigny, 22 Tate McDermott, 23 Andrew Kellaway

Falkirk winger Ethan Ross out with ‘quite a serious' ankle injury
Falkirk have been hit by an early-season blow after key winger Ethan Ross suffered what manager John McGlynn described as 'quite a serious' ankle injury. The 23-year-old – a regular starter over the previous two campaigns as the Bairns romped to back-to-back title wins to seal a return to the William Hill Premiership – limped off in clear discomfort in the first half of last weekend's 3-1 defeat at Livingston. Speaking ahead of Friday's Premier Sports Cup second-round trip to Celtic, McGlynn, although awaiting further clarity, revealed the prognosis was not positive. 'Unfortunately, it's quite a serious one actually,' said the manager. 'He got a scan on it, there's some ligament damage and he's now going to go and see a specialist to see if they might need to do some kind of surgery on it. 'I don't have any timescale, I'm not really sure about that until we get the specialist to look over the scan, and decide what they want to do. 'There's still a fair amount of swelling, so it wasn't necessarily conclusive as to whether or not it was torn completely, or if it was still kind of intact, then maybe they don't need to operate. 'It's a blow for him and for the team because he's a big player for us and he's been doing particularly well.' McGlynn has only been able to recruit four new faces so far this summer as he is holding out in the hope of securing some players on loan from English Premier League clubs. He admitted the wait was proving 'frustrating' but remained hopeful that he could add another three before the window closed. 'We think we're getting a little bit close, we're hoping that because the window closes in a couple of weeks or so,' he said. 'There's nothing new and nothing necessarily imminent, so I don't see us having anyone new in before the game tomorrow. 'But I would like to think maybe in a week's time…not that we're in control of these, we've got to wait on clubs giving us these players. 'We've been very, very patient and we're working with the clubs to try and get these deals done, but we don't have anyone imminent.' Ross joins Finn Yeats, Barney Stewart, Coll Donaldson, Jamie Sneddon and Tom Lang in missing the trip to Celtic Park through injury. McGlynn is hoping his side can conjure a repeat of the display they produced in last season's quarter-final, when they led Brendan Rodgers' side 2-1 up to the 70th minute before going down 5-2. 'For us, a reference was how well we did there last season,' he said. 'We've got to take a bit of confidence and belief from that. 'We're always going to create chances with the type of team we are. We want to come out of Celtic Park with our heads held high and – who knows? – maybe in the quarter-finals.' Viktor Gyokeres' incredible body transformation makes him ‘perfect fit' for Arsenal, says Thierry Henry
THIERRY HENRY says Viktor Gyokeres' incredible body transformation makes him the 'perfect fit' for Arsenal. However, the Gunners legend has urged fans to be 'patient' with their new No.9 in their bid to win a first Prem title since 2004. 7 Viktor Gyokeres has undergone a massive body transformation over the years Credit: Presse Sports 7 Arsenal legend Thierry Henry says Gyokeres is physically ready for the Prem Credit: Presse Sports 7 He has bulked up considerably since his Coventry days Credit: Getty Play Dream Team now! Boss Mikel Arteta has made Swedish striker Gyokeres his marquee signing this summer in a £63.5m deal from Sporting Lisbon. The 27-year-old has experienced English football before – failing to make a single Prem appearance for Brighton between 2017 and 2021 before spending two years at Coventry in the Championship where he scored 40 goals in 97 outings. Back then, Gyokeres was a raw and lean youngster learning his trade – but in a latest photo shoot, he has proved that since then he has bulked up into a goal-scoring monster, netting 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting. And club-legend Henry said: 'He already was in England, let's not forget that. He was at Coventry, he couldn't do it at Brighton. read more arsenal TRANSFER SHOCK Cops probe gun plot linked to £64m Gyokeres signing after double shooting 'So, you can see a guy who already knows what struggling is and comes back from that. 'He's more confident, and you can see from his body the way he's looked after himself, the way he's changed. 'You have a guy that's a killer in the box – numbers don't lie – and you have a team that creates a lot of chances, so it should be the perfect match.' At his luxury penthouse in Lisbon, Gyokeres had an in-built gym where he kept in shape, and revealed to SunSport last month that he spent his days sleeping, eating and working out at home while he waited for his Arsenal move to be rubber-stamped on July 26. BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK One of six incomings in this transfer window, Gyokeres is viewed as the missing piece of the puzzle in Arteta's bid to end Arsenal's 21-year wait for the Premier League title – having finished second for three years on the spin. Gyokeres netted his first goal for the North Londoners in their 3-0 pre-season win over Athletic Bilbao at the Emirates last weekend. Wayne Rooney makes Premier League 2025/26 season predictions but his Man Utd tip leaves pundits shocked And there is huge pressure on the striker to hit the ground running in Arsenal's Prem opener away at Manchester United on Sunday – donning Henry's famous No.14 shirt. But Henry – who scored a club-record 228 goals for Arsenal between 1999 and 2006, lifting two league titles in 2002 and 2004 – believes it could take time for Gyokeres to make his mark. The Frenchman said: 'It's always unfair when I talk about a striker, it brings an unnecessary pressure because it goes above and beyond. 'What you want is people to be patient with him, and what is annoying right now is that people are not that patient anymore. 'They want the guy to perform straight away, score goals straight away and make us win straight away, which doesn't happen often. Sometimes it doesn't click straight away. 'I love when people show me what they can do, and then I can talk. Right now, people love to talk before the performance.' 7 Gyokeres is aiming to produce his iconic celebration a lot for Arsenal this term Credit: PRESSE SPORTS 7 Arteta believes Gyokeres has the aura to succeed in England Credit: PRESSE SPORTS 7 The Swede has already given the fans a glimpse of what he can do Credit: Getty Arsenal now have an imposing set of attacking options which also includes Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli, Noni Madueke and Leandro Trossard. Henry continued: 'I'm an Arsenal fan, I obviously hope he's going to do well, bang goals for us, and guide us to a title, but he's not going to do that alone. 'We have seen that goals don't always assure you a title. We've seen guys with mad numbers, but they didn't win anything. The team around them has to be good. 'From what I've seen from him and how he finishes, hopefully it's going to be a great match and we can finally go back to lift that trophy. But, a lot of teams want to lift that.' The spotlight is on Gyokeres after a disrupted pre-season, but Henry added: 'You saw his goal against Athletic Bilbao. 'That instinct and understanding to anticipate the cross, a great header with soft touch to guide it to the other side of the goal – he is a proper No. 9. That's the goal of a 9. 'He is not a Firmino type of 9 that's going to drop into midfield. He wants to be in the box, in between the posts, and he said it himself – please put the ball in the box and serve me.' Arteta will come under huge pressure should Arsenal not lift silverware this campaign – their last trophy coming in the FA Cup in 2020 – and have a nightmare start facing United, Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, Manchester City and Newcastle in their first six games. Speaking to Betway, Henry said: 'For Arsenal, is it going to be the year? That's what it's going to be for the whole season. They're going to drop points, they're going to win games. 'Can they do it? It's been a thing for a very long time, but this year I think is going to be the year where something has to happen. 'If you don't start well, questions are going to be raised straight away because of what's been happening recently.' 7 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW
