Had Hamilton Accies been relegated on merit, I might still be there, says former skipper
Sean McGinty has stayed in the Championship with Airdrie after a turbulent season Sean McGinty says he needed to take a clean break from Hamilton Accies, and reckons he might still be there had they been relegated on their own merit. Captain McGinty exercised a relegation release clause when a 15-point deduction for off-field offences pitched Accies down to League One. The English-born defender has since signed for Championship side Airdrie, where he will operate in a dual coaching role throughout the season. But he admits his decision to leave New Douglas Park was a heavy one. McGinty said: 'Last season was tough. I came in at the start of the season, we signed quite a few good players, and that's what drew me to Hamilton – a good squad, a good manager, he had success the year before. 'On the pitch we did really well. Coming up from League One to the Championship, to finish what would have been seventh was a good season for us. 'Obviously what happened happened, and it was really disappointing. As a playing group I thought we achieved what we needed to achieve, but unfortunately how it ended was really gutting for everyone. 'But I'm sure they'll bounce back and have a very good season.' McGinty added: 'I had a relegation release clause and decided to activate that. Fortunately I've managed to secure myself a contract within the coming weeks, so I'm delighted to get it all sorted. 'It was a very stressful end to the season for everyone at Hamilton – we didn't know if we were staying up, or going down, so it's just nice to have a clean break and focus on the football. 'If we had been relegated, it was our own fault, and we deserved to go down, it might have been a different story - maybe I would have stayed. 'But I just think the way it all happened, I decided to make the move, and thankfully Airdrie have given me the option to sign for them and keep playing Championship football, which I'm delighted with. 'I'm just really looking forward to getting going, meeting the boys, and getting back out on the pitch. 'I'm really looking forward to getting going and it's quite an exciting challenge for myself. 'I'm sure it will be a very positive year.'

Airdrie snap up former Hamilton Accies defender for Championship charge
Sean McGinty exercised a relegation release clause at Airdrie's derby rivals Airdrie have signed defender Sean McGinty following his release by Hamilton Accies. The English-born former Ayr United and Morton stopper left Airdrie's derby rivals via relegation release clause at the end of last summer. McGinty, 31, brings experience to the Diamonds, but is also working towards his UEFA 'B' licence, with a view to joining the coaching set-up in the near future. The former Manchester United youth told Airdrie's website: 'I'm absolutely delighted to now be part of the Airdrieonians journey. 'I'm looking forward to working with everyone and adding my commitment, experience and enthusiasm to our team effort in the season that lies ahead. 'The one thing I can promise to everybody, especially the fans, is that I'll give 100 per cent to helping the team be more successful.' McGinty played 44 times for Hamilton last season, scoring four goals, including in a 2-1 defeat at Airdrie on March 8. Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe said: 'Sean is a strong leader who has captained the last two clubs he has been at. 'He's aggressive, and being left-sided, he will provide good balance. 'He has an air of authority and is a good communicator, which should help the current squad immensely. 'We're looking forward to working with him when training resumes.'

Hamilton Accies boss 'respects honesty' as stars use clause to exit club
Captain Sean McGinty and striker Nikolay Todorov aren't sticking around Hamilton Accies boss John Rankin says he respects the honesty of captain Sean McGinty and striker Nikolay Todorov after they exercised relegation clauses to leave this week. The club were deducted 15 points for various offences, dropping them into League One, and Rankin admits he wishes circumstances were different. But he says both players will leave with his best wishes. Rankin said: 'It became apparent after the season had finished that players had clauses in their contracts, that if we got relegated they could move on. 'Sean and Toddy have decided to exercise those clauses, as far as I'm led to believe. 'I met Sean and Toddy on the Tuesday after the last game, so I've known for three or four weeks now, and have been planning for that. 'That's why I wanted to meet the players after the season had finished, to look into their eyes and they would be able to tell me the truth. 'I have the utmost respect for those two, they told me straight away what their plans were, I have nothing but respect for them, and wish them nothing but the best for their futures. 'They gave me every bit of energy and effort that they could produce.' Rankin is in the market for replacements and said: 'I wish it was different circumstances, and that we were still in the Championship and they were still at the club, but that's not the case. 'I now need to deal with that and replace them with players with most of the qualities that they have.'

Hamilton Accies skipper Sean McGinty completes exit from club after relegation
The 31-year-old has opted to leave the South Lanarkshire side, having joined from Ayr last summer Hamilton Accies have parted company with club captain Sean McGinty after the defender opted to active a relegation release clause. The 31-year-old joined the club from Ayr United last summer and made 44 appearances for Accies this season, scoring four goals. He took the armband in February when club captain Scott Martin left the club for Partick Thistle in a swap deal with Scott Robinson, who penned a two-and-a-half year deal. However, Lanarkshire Live Sport can reveal McGinty has left the club with immediate effect after deciding against staying with Accies as they prepare to embark on a campaign in League One. The centre-back is keen to remain in the Championship but is also open to a move down south, where he has spent the majority of his career. The ex-Manchester United youth has played for the likes of Torquay, Rochdale, Aldershot and Sheffield United, while his stay in Scotland over the last five years has seen him turn out for Ayr United, Partick Thistle and Morton. Accies, who are moving to Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld this summer, have already announced they will remain full-time in their quest to seal an immediate return to the second tier next season and McGinty was one of a small number of players within the squad who have relegation release clauses. The club has yet to announce its list of released players.

The recently relegated side are hoping to keep most of their squad together for a crack and an immediate return to the Championship Hamilton Accies boss John Rankin will sit down with his relegated squad today to see who is with him for next season's League One campaign.
