Airdrie's comeback against Ross County shows we can be a force this season, says Sean McGinty
Sean McGinty reckons Airdrie's stirring second half comeback over title favourites Ross County shows they have a squad that can compete in the Championship this term. The Diamonds were in the doldrums last season, rooted to the foot of the table for most of the season before a 15-point deduction for McGinty's former club Hamilton Accies saved them from relegation and gave them a play-off lifeline that they grasped with both hands. Now with a fresh start and a revamped squad, Airdrie kicked off with an impressive comeback from 2-0 down to salvage a point from the Staggies, who are tipped to go straight back to the Premiership this term and looked to be cruising after Aki Wright's double. But Euan Henderson's fine second-half brace has got the Diamonds up and running and McGinty feels there's a group at New Broomfield who can make an impact this term. He said: 'It is a really good group of players and I think we've seen in that second half that when it all comes together, we can compete this season and we have a really good team here. 'We just didn't quite put it together in the first half, but I am really impressed by the second half performance and, hopefully, we can take that into the rest of the season. 'Ross County are supposed to be one of them teams who will be right up there and we've completed very well against them, but we'll just take every game as it comes.' Centre-back McGinty kept the Staggies' star striker Ronan Hale quiet on the day, as the £1m-rated hitman failed to find the target. And McGinty said: 'Ronan is a good player, he scored a lot of goals in the Premiership last season. 'I'm not sure how much longer he will be here, he'll probably move on in the next few weeks and I am sure wherever he goes he will continue to bang in the goals. 'But I really enjoyed it out there. In the first game of the season, you blow the cobwebs off in the first 1-15 minutes of the game. 'I thought we got right into it, started really well and had them on the back foot, so we are really disappointed with their first goal. One of our players gets blocked and it is a free header. 'The boys put in a really strong performance after that and showed really good character to come back into the game from 2-0 down.' It provides plenty of positives to take into Saturday's tricky trip to Dunfermline, but McGinty won't get carried away. He added: 'It's only the first game and there is a long way to go, but we will give 100 per cent and see where it takes it us, come May. 'It is a good point and we are looking forward to Dunfermline now.'

Airdrie sign third player from Hamilton Accies this summer as midfielder checks in
Jamie Barjonas is Airdrie's latest summer capture Airdrieonians have completed the signing of midfielder Jamie Barjonas - making him the third player to join the Diamonds after leaving Hamilton Accies his summer. The former Rangers man was released by Accies at the end of his contract in May and has now penned a deal with the Monklands men, keeping him in the Championship after Hamilton's relegation to League One last term. The 26-year-old joins his old Accies team-mates Sean McGinty and Euan Henderson, who both made the switch to North Lanarkshire earlier this month. The move to New Broomfield is an exciting one for local lad Barjonas and he said: 'I'm a Cumbernauld boy so I'm quite local. I was at Hamilton last season and everyone knows what happened last season. "From the outside looking in at Airdrie as a football club, it looks like a really well-run club. Even when I was at Kelty Hearts I was on the end of a few bad results - there was a 6-1 here [at New Broomfield]. 'But I'm buzzing to be here – I've spoken to the manager and I think that he's got a real passion and a real vision for the game, so I'm delighted to be here. 'It's a great squad we've got here, with a great manager and great staff, so I'm just really looking forward to the season getting underway.' Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe said: "Jamie is a player who has great ability. He's strong on the ball and clever. "His quick and positive play will add a different dimension to our midfield and attacking areas."

Ex-Hearts star signs up at Airdrie as Diamonds raid Hamilton Accies again in summer rebuild
Euan Henderson joins Sean McGinty at the Diamonds Airdrie have agreed a deal to sign former Hamilton Accies forward Euan Henderson. Henderson, 24, can play in a number of positions, and joins from Airdrie's former Championship rivals, where he spent the last two seasons, after six years at Hearts. He joins former Accies team-mate Sean McGinty at the Diamonds this coming season. Hamilton were stripped of 15 points for various off-field offences, pitching them into League One, and landing Airdrie in the play-off, which they successfully came through. Henderson told the club's website: "I'm really pleased to be joining Airdrieonians, it's a great opportunity and I'm happy to get it over the line. "I can't wait to get started - I'm looking forward to settling in and meeting everyone, and I'll be doing everything I can to help the team climb as high up the table as possible." Player-boss Rhys McCabe said: "We've seen over the years that Euan is a good player who is dynamic, quick and offers versatility in the forward areas. "He's direct and positive, and in our environment that will hopefully bring the best out in him as well as adding to our attacking options."

Had Hamilton Accies been relegated on merit, I might still be there, says former skipper
Sean McGinty has stayed in the Championship with Airdrie after a turbulent season Sean McGinty says he needed to take a clean break from Hamilton Accies, and reckons he might still be there had they been relegated on their own merit. Captain McGinty exercised a relegation release clause when a 15-point deduction for off-field offences pitched Accies down to League One. The English-born defender has since signed for Championship side Airdrie, where he will operate in a dual coaching role throughout the season. But he admits his decision to leave New Douglas Park was a heavy one. McGinty said: 'Last season was tough. I came in at the start of the season, we signed quite a few good players, and that's what drew me to Hamilton – a good squad, a good manager, he had success the year before. 'On the pitch we did really well. Coming up from League One to the Championship, to finish what would have been seventh was a good season for us. 'Obviously what happened happened, and it was really disappointing. As a playing group I thought we achieved what we needed to achieve, but unfortunately how it ended was really gutting for everyone. 'But I'm sure they'll bounce back and have a very good season.' McGinty added: 'I had a relegation release clause and decided to activate that. Fortunately I've managed to secure myself a contract within the coming weeks, so I'm delighted to get it all sorted. 'It was a very stressful end to the season for everyone at Hamilton – we didn't know if we were staying up, or going down, so it's just nice to have a clean break and focus on the football. 'If we had been relegated, it was our own fault, and we deserved to go down, it might have been a different story - maybe I would have stayed. 'But I just think the way it all happened, I decided to make the move, and thankfully Airdrie have given me the option to sign for them and keep playing Championship football, which I'm delighted with. 'I'm just really looking forward to getting going, meeting the boys, and getting back out on the pitch. 'I'm really looking forward to getting going and it's quite an exciting challenge for myself. 'I'm sure it will be a very positive year.'

Airdrie snap up former Hamilton Accies defender for Championship charge
Sean McGinty exercised a relegation release clause at Airdrie's derby rivals Airdrie have signed defender Sean McGinty following his release by Hamilton Accies. The English-born former Ayr United and Morton stopper left Airdrie's derby rivals via relegation release clause at the end of last summer. McGinty, 31, brings experience to the Diamonds, but is also working towards his UEFA 'B' licence, with a view to joining the coaching set-up in the near future. The former Manchester United youth told Airdrie's website: 'I'm absolutely delighted to now be part of the Airdrieonians journey. 'I'm looking forward to working with everyone and adding my commitment, experience and enthusiasm to our team effort in the season that lies ahead. 'The one thing I can promise to everybody, especially the fans, is that I'll give 100 per cent to helping the team be more successful.' McGinty played 44 times for Hamilton last season, scoring four goals, including in a 2-1 defeat at Airdrie on March 8. Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe said: 'Sean is a strong leader who has captained the last two clubs he has been at. 'He's aggressive, and being left-sided, he will provide good balance. 'He has an air of authority and is a good communicator, which should help the current squad immensely. 'We're looking forward to working with him when training resumes.'
