Tesla likely to face ‘a few rough quarters' from end of U.S. EV support, Musk says
Musk's electric-vehicle maker posted the worst quarterly sales decline in more than a decade and profit that missed Wall Street targets, but its profit margin on making cars was better than many feared. Musk is pursuing autonomous driving to power privately owned vehicles as well as robotaxis that it plans to put into production next year.
In the meantime, it is working on a new, cheaper car, though chief financial officer Vaibhav Taneja said that production would ramp up next quarter, slower than initially expected. It produced some initial units by the end of June. The company did not provide an update on its full-year deliveries forecast, citing the economy and timing of the new car rollout.
'Tesla's disappointing results aren't surprising given the rocky road it's travelled recently,' said eMarketer analyst Jacob Bourne. 'A truly affordable model will hit the bullseye in terms of boosting sales if Tesla can effectively position it right without detracting from its higher-priced models.'
The second straight quarterly revenue drop, with a 12-per-cent fall, comes despite the launch of a refreshed version of its best-selling Model Y SUV that investors had hoped would help revive demand. A 51-per-cent dive in sales of automotive regulatory credits, which other automakers who have difficulty complying with government emissions rules buy from Tesla, also hurt revenue and profit. Revenue fell to US$22.5-billion for the April-June quarter from US$25.50-billion a year earlier, slightly behind analyst targets compiled by LSEG. Adjusted profit per share of 40 cents lagged the Wall Street consensus.
A key driver of Tesla's profit is disappearing fast
The automotive gross margin, which excludes regulatory credits, was 14.96%, above Wall Street estimates, helped in part by lower cost per vehicle. Pricing and margins are important as Tesla wrestles with demand and faces falling government support. Tesla global deliveries dropped 13.5 per cent in the second quarter, and the U.S. government later this year is cutting US$7,500 tax credits for EV buyers. 'We probably could have a few rough quarters,' Musk said, when asked about the credits. 'I'm not saying we will, but we could – you know, Q4, Q1, maybe Q2, but once you get to autonomy at scale in the second half of next year, certainly by the end of next year, I think I'd be surprised if Tesla's economics are not very compelling.'
Tesla had said in April it would start producing the more affordable model by the end of the first half and sources had told Reuters the vehicle, a stripped-down version of its Model Y SUV, would be delayed by at least months. Tesla on Wednesday did not disclose any details of the model, how many units it had made, or how it would be priced. Musk responded to a question of what the vehicle would look like by saying, 'It's just a Model Y,' joking that he 'let the cat out of the bag there.' Tesla's lineup is relatively old, despite a recent refresh of the flagship Model Y, and it faces rising competition from cheaper EVs, especially in China, and a persistent backlash against Musk's far-right political views.
The company also said it continued to expect volume production of its custom-built robotaxi – called the Cybercab – and Semi Truck in 2026. Much of the company's trillion-dollar valuation hangs on its bet on its robotaxi service – a small trial of which was started in Austin, Texas, last month with about a dozen Model Y SUVs – and on its development of humanoid robots. 'Autonomy is the story,' Musk said on the conference call, describing plans to roll out autonomous ride hailing to about half of the U.S. population by the end of this year.
Tesla is looking for robotaxi regulatory approval in the San Francisco Bay Area, Nevada, Arizona, Florida and other places, he said, and the company is close to getting regulatory approval for supervised Full Self-Driving driver assistance software in the Netherlands. The robotaxi business was likely to have a material impact on financials around the end of next year, Musk said.
Investors are concerned about whether Musk will be able to devote enough time and attention to Tesla after he locked horns with Trump by forming a new political party this month. He had promised weeks earlier that he would cut back on government work and focus on his companies.
A series of high-profile executive exits, including a longtime Musk confidant who oversaw sales and manufacturing in North America and Europe, is also adding to the concerns.

Could a Quantum Computing Bubble Be About to Pop? History Offers a Clear Answer
Key Points IonQ, Rigetti Computing, D-Wave Quantum, and Quantum Computing have reached valuation levels well beyond those seen during prior stock market bubbles. Each of these companies has recently raised capital through a series of equity offerings and stock issuances. These moves could suggest that the valuation levels for these businesses are not only abnormally high, but unsustainable. These 10 stocks could mint the next wave of millionaires › Last summer, companies such as IonQ (NYSE: IONQ), Rigetti Computing (NASDAQ: RGTI), D-Wave Quantum (NYSE: QBTS), and Quantum Computing (NASDAQ: QUBT) were unknown penny stocks. However, as quantum computing steadily made its way toward center stage in the artificial intelligence (AI) realm, each of these companies witnessed meteoric rises in their share prices. Over the last 12 months, IonQ stock has blasted higher by 517%, while Rigetti, D-Wave, and Quantum Computing have experienced surges of at least 1,500% as of this writing (July 21). With valuations reaching historically high levels, could investors be on the verge of witnessing a quantum computing bubble bursting? Is quantum computing in a bubble? The chart below illustrates valuation trends among popular quantum computing stocks on a price-to-sales (P/S) basis. IONQ PS Ratio data by YCharts. As I outlined in a prior article, the quantum computing stocks above are trading at far higher P/S multiples compared to levels seen during the dot-com and COVID-19 stock bubbles. For example, during the internet boom in the late 1990s, stocks such as Amazon, Cisco, and Microsoft experienced peak P/S ratios in the range of 30x and 40x. Taking this a step further, popular COVID stocks such as Zoom Communications and Peloton saw P/S multiples top out at 124x and 20x, respectively. The big theme here is that IonQ, Rigetti, D-Wave, and Quantum Computing are each trading for valuation multiples that could be seen as historically high, even when compared to prior bubble events. With that said, other AI companies that are also exploring quantum computing -- such as Nvidia, Amazon, Alphabet, and Microsoft -- currently trade for much more reasonable valuation multiples when compared to the companies in the chart above. For this reason, I do not think the entire quantum computing landscape is at risk of experiencing a bubble-bursting event. However, IonQ and its peers have been dropping some breadcrumbs in recent months that lead me to think the smaller quantum computing players could be on the verge of a harsh sell-off. What's going on under the hood with quantum computing stocks? After some digging into certain filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), I think IonQ, Rigetti, D-Wave, and Quantum Computing may be trying to signal some important things to investors: In February, IonQ announced that it planned to raise up to $500 million through a series of stock issuances. The company doubled down on its capital-raising ambitions more recently, offering 14,165,708 shares at a price of $55.49 -- raising nearly $1 billion in the process. In June, Rigetti raised $350 million in capital after completing an at-the-market (ATM) equity offering. Between June 11 and June 27, D-Wave Quantum raised $400 million through an ATM offering. Of note: This followed a prior raise of $150 million that occurred in January. In late June, Quantum Computing raised $200 million following the issuance of 14 million shares at an average price of $14.25. What's really going on here? With each of these quantum computing stocks trading near all-time highs, it appears to me that management is looking to take advantage of frothy market conditions. IONQ data by YCharts. Quantum computing is a research-heavy, capital-intensive industry. Management at IonQ and its peers surely understand this, and so I see these capital raises as a calculated move to capitalize on inflated, overstretched valuations. Should you invest in quantum computing stocks? To me, any hint of a bubble surrounding IonQ and its smaller peers may already be in the process of bursting. Under the surface, the various stock issuances and equity offerings annotated above could suggest that management does not believe current price levels are sustainable. By using the dot-com and COVID bubbles as benchmarks, history would suggest that a major correction could be on the horizon for these small quantum computing stocks. Issuing stock to raise funds is not sustainable in the long run. Furthermore, consistently diluting shareholders through these offerings could call into question how these companies are allocating capital. In my eyes, if investors are seeking exposure to the quantum computing industry, they are best off exploring more diversified opportunities in big tech as opposed to the smaller, more speculative players analyzed in this piece. Trudeau's gone and U.S. President Joe Biden, who shared his enthusiasm for subsidizing the EV industry, has been replaced by Donald Trump, who is dismantling those subsidies. Despite that, Trudeau's successor, Prime Minister Mark Carney, appears to be doubling down on Trudeau's bet. In some ways, the government is trapped. Canada's federal and provincial governments — mainly Ontario and Quebec — have already earmarked up to $52.5 billion of taxpayers' money to subsidize 13 major EV projects in Canada. That's $6.3 billion, or 14%, more than the $46.1 billion the industry itself is investing in them, according to the parliamentary budget officer. Meanwhile, EV sales are dramatically down in Canada and some EV projects are on hold as a result. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Sales dropped by almost a third in May compared to a year ago, comprising a mere 7.9% of all new car sales, according to Statistics Canada. That's far below the federal government mandate that begins next year, requiring that zero emission vehicles — meaning battery-electric, hydrogen fuel cell or plug-in hybrid — account for 20% of all new car sales, rising to 60% in 2030 and 100% in 2035. The auto sector says the only way to achieve that would be to pull a million new gas-powered vehicles off the market, limiting consumer choice, increasing delivery times and driving up costs for consumers at a time when our auto sector is under siege from Trump's tariff war. The only way for the Liberal government to increase EV sales — which are more expensive than gas-powered vehicles — is to restore a federal program giving taxpayer-funded subsidies of up to $5,000 to purchasers of new EVs. It began in 2019 and was suspended in January 2025 after doling out $3 billion in subsidies to EV buyers, whose incomes are already above average. With the Carney government promising to restore the program, the problem is that subsidizing a product few Canadians want to buy in an attempt to reach an unrealistic government-imposed mandatory sales target, is a bad bet for taxpayers. Tea app promising safe dating for women hacked, putting users' privacy at risk
Tea, a provocative dating app designed to let women anonymously ask or warn each other about men they'd encountered, rocketed to the top spot on the U.S. Apple App Store this week. On Friday, the company behind the app confirmed it had been hacked: Thousands of images, including selfies, were leaked online. Article content 'We have engaged third-party cybersecurity experts and are working around the clock to secure our systems,' San Francisco-based Tea Dating Advice Inc. said in a statement. Article content Article content Article content Article content Tea founder Sean Cook, a software engineer who previously worked at Salesforce and Shutterfly, says on the app's website that he founded the company in 2022 after witnessing his own mother's 'terrifying' experiences. Cook said they included unknowingly dating men with criminal records and being 'catfished' — deceived by men using false identities. Tea markets itself as a safe way for women to anonymously vet men they might meet on dating apps such as Tinder or Bumble — ensuring that the men are who they say they are, not criminals and not already married or in a relationship. It's been compared to the Yelp of dating. Article content In an Apple Store review, one woman wrote that she used a Tea search to investigate a man she'd begun talking to and discovered 'over 20 red flags, including serious allegations like assault and recording women without their consent.' She said she cut off communication. 'I can't imagine how things could've gone had I not known,' she wrote. Article content Article content Article content A surge in social media attention over the past week pushed Tea to the No. 1 spot at the U.S. Apple Store as of July 24, according to Sensor Tower, a research firm. In the seven days from July 17-23, Tea downloads shot up 525 per cent compared to the week before. Tea said in an Instagram post that it had reached four million users. Article content A female columnist for The Times of London newspaper, who signed into the app, on Thursday called Tea a 'man-shaming site' and complained that 'this is simply vigilante justice, entirely reliant on the scruples of anonymous women. With Tea on the scene, what man would ever dare date a woman again?' Article content 'Over the last couple of weeks, we've gotten hundreds of calls on it. It's blown up,' attorney Minc said. 'People are upset. They're getting named. They're getting shamed.' Article content In 1996, Congress passed legislation protecting websites and apps from liability for things posted by their users. But the users can be sued for spreading 'false and defamatory' information, Minc said.
