Kulgam's Akhal Forest Operation Drags Into Day 12; Forces Wait Before Delivering Final Blow
Twelve days after security forces launched an anti-terror operation in the dense forests of Akhal in Kulgam's Dewsar area, the encounter is still ongoing, marking one of the Valley's longest continuous operations in recent memory.
The operation began on August 1, following specific inputs received by the security forces indicating that a heavily armed group, believed to be Pakistani nationals, had taken shelter in the dense Akhal forest. The initial cordon and search operation led to the encounter. So far, one terrorist has been killed in the operation named 'Operation Akhal". Two brave soldiers, Lance Naik Pritpal Singh and Sepoy Harminder Singh, made the supreme sacrifice, while ten other personnel have been injured.
Thick Woods, Tough Terrain
According to Lt Gen Devendra Pratap Pandey (Retd), former commander of the Srinagar-based 15 Corps, the slow progress is deliberate. 'This is thick jungle, with heavy undergrowth. Rushing in risks more casualties," he said. 'We've already lost two brave men, and there's no need to take more hits. The aim is to eliminate the terrorists without collateral damage." He assured News18 that the terrorists would be eliminated.
Experts say the terrain of the Akhal forest favours the militants, with natural caves, multiple exit routes, and a direct link to the Pir Panjal range. The group is suspected to be from The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar-e-Taiba proxy, and is believed to possess night-vision devices, long-range rifles, and ample ammunition.
The Army, J&K Police's Special Operations Group, CRPF commandos, and elite Para units have secured the area in a multi-layered cordon. Armed drones and helicopters provide surveillance and precision strike options.

The 'Mahadev' Template
The ongoing Kulgam standoff contrasts sharply with Operation Mahadev, conducted last month in the Dachigam forests. Acting on 14 days of pinpoint intelligence, security forces eliminated three terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack in under an hour. That mission, involving the Army, CRPF, and J&K Police, was widely praised for its precision, coordination, and lack of collateral damage.
Satellite-based tracking, human intelligence from locals, and rapid multi-agency mobilisation ensured the operation was over almost as soon as it began.
Waiting for the Right Moment
Sources say the Akhal mission is being guided by the same principle—strike once conditions favour the security forces. With senior officers, including the Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, Chinar Corps Commander Lieutenant General Prashant Srivastav, and J&K DGP Nalin Prabhat, visiting the site, troops on the ground have been told there is no rush.
The message is clear: patience now, a decisive finish later.

Rs 3,000 Crore Cyprus-Based Betting Fraud: ED Freezes Mule Accounts With Rs 110 Crore
MUMBAI: In a multi-city crackdown against a Cyprus-based illegal online betting platform, the ED has frozen Rs 110 crore parked in mule bank accounts as part of a Rs 3,000 crore fraud, an official said on Thursday. Cricket stars Sunil Narine and Nicholas Pooran, a Bollywood actress and an Indian rap star were among the brand ambassadors of the platform Parimatch. The ED initiated an investigation on the basis of an FIR registered by the Cyber Police Station, Mumbai, against on complaints that it defrauded investors by luring them with high returns, generating over Rs 3,000 crore in a year. The probe also uncovered that payment companies whose applications for Payment Aggregator licenses were rejected by the RBI, offered their services to Parimatch in the garb of technology service providers (TSPs) and offered their API (Application Programming Interface) to facilitate user fund collections, said an ED statement. During the multicity searches, the Directorate of Enforcement (ED), Mumbai Zonal Office, seized incriminating documents and digital devices on Tuesday under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002 from 17 locations in Mumbai, Delhi, Noida, Jaipur, Surat, Madurai, Kanpur and Hyderabad. The probe against Parimatch revealed that the platform gained visibility through aggressive marketing, including sponsorship of sports tournaments and partnerships with well-known celebrities The ED said the platform also set up Indian entities to run surrogate advertisements under the names "Parimatch Sports" and "Parimatch News". Payments to these agencies were made via foreign inward remittances. Searches revealed that Parimatch routed users' funds through mule accounts using different strategies across the country. In one case, funds deposited by users into mule accounts were withdrawn in cash in a specific locality in Tamil Nadu. This cash was handed over to hawala operators, who used it to recharge virtual wallets of a UK-based company. These wallets were then used to buy USDT cryptocurrency in the name of mule crypto accounts, operated by Parimatch agents.

11K security personnel to be deployed near Red Fort; surveillance intensified across Delhi
The national capital is being fortified for Independence Day — snipers at high-rise buildings, heightened camera surveillance across the city and more than 11,000 security personnel and 3,000 traffic police for security in and around the Red Fort. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (August 15, 2025 will address the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort. Delhi Police, the Army and paramilitary personnel have been deployed in the area for the day, with multiple layers of security in place. Delhi Traffic Police has issued strict instructions, restricting commercial vehicles from entering the capital after 10 pm on Thursday (August 14), among others. Special teams have been deployed at all the major railway stations, inter-state bus terminals, airports, and metro stations for round-the-clock monitoring. Passenger screenings, baggage checks, and random identity verifications have been intensified, the officials said. Security has also been stepped up at water treatment plants to protect vital installations in the national capital, they said, adding that a special focus is on north and central districts in Delhi. Delhi Police Commissioner S. B. K. Singh has designated a DCP-rank officer to oversee the anti-drone mechanism, they said, adding that surveillance along the Yamuna has also been intensified with speed boats deployed in the river. On Wednesday, Mr. Singh briefed officers on the arrangements with a key directive to ensure there are no bird feeding points in the areas surrounding the Red Fort. 'The Delhi Police, in coordination with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), has asked non-vegetarian eateries to dispose of food waste properly so flocks of birds are not attracted,' a senior police officer said. For the first time, under-vehicle surveillance systems (UVSS) will be deployed at five parking areas of the Red Fort to scan the underside of vehicles for explosives, weapons or contraband, the officer said. The technology uses cameras and scanners to detect threats or anomalies, bolstering security at the checkpoints and sensitive locations. The admission to Red Fort on August 15 is strictly through invitation cards and only labelled vehicles will be allowed in its vicinity, the officer said. Headcount cameras to track crowd numbers and devices to flag unattended or suspicious objects will also be deployed, while intrusion-detection cameras will monitor the restricted zones, the officer said. The special police commissioner (law and order) and deputy commissioners have been directed to maintain strict vigil in their respective jurisdictions, he said. Snipers and rooftop surveillance teams will be deployed to secure the high-rises near the Red Fort, while movement in the designated restricted zones will be strictly regulated through access control mechanisms, the officer added. Apart from multiple security drills, night patrolling and enhanced foot patrolling, plain-clothed surveillance teams are being mobilised to strengthen ground presence, especially in the sensitive zones, another officer said. "Social media platforms are also being closely monitored by the cyber units to detect and neutralise any possible online threats or misinformation campaigns that may disrupt peace," the officer said. More than 10,000 security personnel and 3,000 traffic cops, including paramilitary forces and special commandos, have been deployed for the Independence Day week, police said. Anti-sabotage checks, vehicle barricading, and verification drives are being intensified in coordination with the intelligence agencies, officials said. Commissioner Singh has also issued an order banning the use of sub-conventional aerial platforms such as paragliders, hang-gliders, UAVs, drones, hot air balloons and other remotely piloted aircraft over Delhi skies between August 2 and August 16. "These aerial platforms can be potentially misused by anti-social elements or terrorist outfits for para-jumping or launching airborne attacks, posing a serious threat to public safety, VIP security, and critical installations during the Independence Day celebrations," an official order said. All district police units have been directed to conduct foot patrolling in the markets, Metro stations, bus terminals, and other public gathering points. Senior officers have been told to remain on the ground and review the security arrangements personally. Surprise inspections and flag marches have also been planned across various districts to instil confidence among the citizens and deter the miscreants, officials said. Delhi Police is working in close coordination with the central security agencies and intelligence units to ensure that no loopholes remain in the security apparatus during this critical period, officials said.
