Star Bomber badly injured in Richmond's upset win
In arguably the lowest-quality match of the season, the Tigers failed to score a goal in the second and third quarters, but still managed to secure their fourth win of the season.
A clutch goal from Jacob Hopper put Richmond in front midway through the final term, setting up the 6.10 (46) to 4.13 (37) victory.
It was the rebuilding Tigers' first win since beating lowly West Coast on May 11.
After each team kicked three goals in the opening quarter, the standard of the match collapsed dramatically.
Essendon kicked the only goal across the second and third quarters as both teams repeatedly butchered the ball.
No team scored a goal from Richmond ace Jayden Short's major late in the first quarter until midway through the third term, when Essendon young gun Archer May converted a free kick.
Leading by seven points at the final change, Essendon will be ruing a missed opportunity, but also sweating on scans to Martin.
The 24-year-old was shoved over the boundary line by Richmond forward Rhyan Mansell, before landing awkwardly.
He was subbed off after hurting his right knee midway through the first quarter
Martin, who was best on ground when Essendon defeated the Tigers in their Dreamtime clash two months ago, looked shattered as he was assessed by medical staff in the rooms.
He sat on the bench for the rest of the match, making his way out to the three-quarter time huddle on crutches.
Essendon were tight-lipped on the severity of Martin's injury, but aren't ruling out an ACL.
It continues a miserable run with injury for Essendon, who have blooded 12 debutants this season.
Six Bombers, including playmakers Sam Draper, Jye Caldwell and Zach Reid, have already been ruled out for the season.
The Bombers have started investigating why so many players are breaking down, many of them due to repeated soft-tissue injuries.
Tigers star Tim Taranto stood out in a scrappy contest with 34 touches and a goal, while Essendon captain Zach Merrett battled valiantly with 31 possessions.
It was Essendon's sixth straight loss, ahead of a Marvel Stadium date with surging GWS on Thursday night.

Coach debate For those with a touch of the Brisbane bloodlines, we have premiership teammates turned senior coaches Brad Scott and Michael Voss going head-to-head. Scott and Voss were flagless in their first coaching incarnations. Who could get there first in their second coming? That's worth a good half-time debate. Trade machine Loading Ahead of what shapes as a busy trade period, there's no harm in going through the entire playing list of each team, or even just the actual teams which take to the field, and tick off who you think won't be at your club next season. A penny for the thoughts of new Blues chief executive Graham Wright if he is shown in the stands. Voss said this week the Blues need players with more speed who can use the ball. When a Blue butches a kick, it's worth penning the three best midfielders you think they could attract. Making his mark Mid-season draftee Liam McMahon has been a find for the Bombers. The Blues' former VFL captain booted four goals against Geelong, and three against St Kilda. McMahon is off contract, and will be desperate to continue his great form. Thank goodness If this turns into a stinkathon, fans could thank Seven for opting to spare the wider football community of this game, in favour of Sunday night's top-four defining clash between Hawthorn and Brisbane. Carlton leaves McGovern out, contract extension hopes dashed

Carlton defender Mitch McGovern will not trigger a contract extension for 2026 after he was left out of the senior side for the final game of the season. McGovern has failed to meet a games-based trigger, which would have guaranteed an automatic extension for next season. But he was not picked in the final side, instead named as an emergency. He could still remain at the club in 2026, but the re-negotiation would give Carlton and new CEO Graham Wright more flexibility. However the uncontracted defender will likely draw attention from rival clubs as a versatile key position player. Carlton made two changes for the clash, recalling Lucas Camporeale for his second game of the season, as well as Will White. The father-son pick will strangely bookend the season, having debuted in round 1. Lachie Fogarty and Cooper Lord will miss through injury. Meanwhile, Essendon veteran Dylan Shiel has been recalled for what could be his last game in the red and black. The defender was suspended for the controversial push on Mark O'Connor that led to friendly fire on teammate Luamon Lual. But he will play on Thursday night – with a growing likelihood he is not at the club in 2026 considering he has not been offered a contract. The 32-year-old will play game 13, which is the highest tally he has reached in his past three seasons.
