UDFA corner with whopping 56 college games played hoping to impress Cowboys coaches
Harmon just completed his sixth season at Stephen F Austin, enrolling and putting on a collegiate uniform a year before the COVID pandemic hit. Older college players are often judged on a different scale than their younger counterparts, because they have more mature physical characteristics which can often give them an advantage. A player with no pro experience being a elder statesman in the locker room is a rare thing in the regular season, but Harmon is hoping to be that guy.

Three intriguing storylines heading into Packers' preseason opener vs. Jets
After weeks of battling each other in training camp, the Green Bay Packers will finally face new competition in Saturday's preseason matchup against the New York Jets. While the starters are expected to knock some of the rust off, this is mostly a chance for players vying for a roster spot to make a strong impression. Even if they don't stick in Green Bay, guys are still auditioning for 31 other teams, meaning every rep counts. In the lead-up to Saturday's matchup, we are highlighting three intriguing storylines worth following when the Packers kick off their 2025 preseason. Is the Matthew Golden hype real? Could Golden be one of Love's top targets as a rookie? It's not out of the question. The 23rd overall selection has been one of the most talked-about players in training camp, with Jordan Love telling ESPN's Kevin Clark in a recent sitdown, "He's gonna be a stud." Golden has lived up to his first-round billing thus far, flashing his polish, sure-handedness, and big-play potential. In practice, Golden has looked really good during 1-on-1s and has consistently made plays against the starting defense. Now it's time for him to show what he can do against a different defense. Jets head coach Aaron Glenn also said he plans to play his starters on Saturday, so this will be a good opportunity for Golden to show off his skillset, even if he plays only a series or two. The latest undrafted rookie gem? Defensive tackle Nazir Stackhouse has been hard to miss — literally and figuratively. The 6-4, 327-pound run-stuffer has impressed so much that he's earned reps with the starting defense. A 42-game starter at Georgia, Stackhouse went undrafted but was among 10 rookies signed by the Packers. Green Bay has had at least one UDFA on its initial 53-man roster every year since 2005, and Stackhouse is making a strong case to keep that streak alive. With T.J. Slaton leaving in free agency, there's a massive opening in the middle of the defensive line — and Stackhouse is doing his best to fill it. Can Bo Melton stick around as a cornerback? Melton has surprised his coaches and even himself with how well he's done in his first training camp since switching from wide receiver to cornerback. "I definitely wasn't expecting to make tons of plays," Melton said. "I ain't made a million of them, but I've made some plays I was like, 'Oh snap, like OK.' So, I did surprise myself with the skills I brought to the table, I would say, but it definitely was fun just getting out there with the boys." Last week, LaFleur praised Melton's progress, saying, "He's done a nice job." While Melton hasn't been perfect in practice, he's been surprisingly consistent for someone brand new to the position. Defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley recently said, "It's one of the hardest positions physically to play," but Melton has held his own so far, even intercepting Sean Clifford while competing during one-on-ones on Thursday. Injuries allowed Melton to run with the ones on Thursday, though he has mostly been out there with the second unit. Knowing he should get a lot of playing time on Saturday, this weekend's matchup will be a big test for Melton and his quest to make the team.

On Football: Cowboys can't afford to let Micah Parsons' contract dispute linger into the season
Jerry Jones is known for dragging contract negotiations so it's no surprise Micah Parsons is just the latest Dallas Cowboys star player to have to wait on a new deal. Dak Prescott had to play on the franchise tag in 2020 after being unable to reach agreement on an extension, and he didn't get another new deal last season until hours before the Week 1 opener. Jones eventually caved and made Prescott the highest-paid player in NFL history with an average of $60 million per year. CeeDee Lamb held out into late August last year following an All-Pro season before Jones gave him a four-year, $136 million deal. All-Pro guard Zack Martin held out of training camp in 2023 while waiting for a new contract. This is nothing new for Jones. Back when the Cowboys were America's Team, even Emmitt Smith couldn't get paid quickly. The Hall of Fame running back missed the first two games of the 1993 season because of a contract dispute. He eventually signed a $13.6 million deal — most for a running back at the time — after the Cowboys started 0-2 without him but they still ended up winning the Super Bowl. Jones mentioned that when training camp started. That's not a good sign that Parsons will get what he wants sooner than later. Jones operates on his own time and there's plenty of ego involved. He's been a unique owner since he bought the Cowboys in 1989 and named himself general manager. Hiring Jimmy Johnson to replace Tom Landry was Jones' best decision. Both men are in the Hall of Fame for it and the Cowboys won three Super Bowls under Jones. But they haven't reached an NFC championship game in 30 years and they won't get through a tough NFC East without Parsons, the two-time All-Pro edge rusher and generational talent. The Philadelphia Eagles are defending Super Bowl champions. The Washington Commanders faced the Eagles in the conference title game. Dallas has a big challenge trying to compete in the division and they'll need Parsons to have a chance. Jones hasn't even talked to his agent, David Mulugheta. Jones has said he had direct conversations with Parsons in the spring over a contract extension that would almost certainly make him the highest-paid defender in NFL history. By waiting for Myles Garrett (4 years, $160 million) and T.J. Watt (3 years, $123 million) to sign new contracts, Parsons is in line to make more than $41 million per year. The Cowboys waited to sign Prescott and were forced to give him more money than any other player because he was the next quarterback in line. Jones' patience has a negative impact on his checkbook. Parsons, who is a hold-in at camp, requested a trade last week. Jones blew it off. 'We have no intentions of trading Micah, and that's part of the negotiations,' Cowboys co-owner Stephen Jones told the team's website. 'That's just the nature of negotiations. I think any player that's holding out for a contract – I think I've read around the league where they've all requested to be traded. So that's part of it. We have no intention of trading Micah. He's right here in camp.' Business is business but there seems like there's some tension in this relationship that won't be erased until Jones and the Cowboys give in. Jerry Jones isn't certain Parsons will play in Week 1 against the Eagles. 'A big part of that is his decision. How would I know that?' he said. Parsons is scheduled to make $24 million in the final season of his five-year rookie contract and could be franchise tagged in 2026 without an extension. Prescott is confident a deal will get done because he's been through it. 'I can say from experience that it's just frustrating,' Prescott said. 'I hate that he's going through it, but as I've told him, keep handling things the way that you are, and I believe that he should be paid.' Longtime NFL super-agent Leigh Steinberg, who represents the Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes, also expressed confidence that Parsons will get his new deal. 'Despite the current friction and heightened public spotlight surrounding the Cowboys-Parsons contract deadlock, this situation will ultimately be resolved,' Steinberg told the AP. 'Micah Parsons is simply too valuable to the franchise - a generational talent who's irreplaceable on the field and central to the team's identity. The Cowboys, for all the noise, are ultimately pragmatic when it comes to retaining cornerstone players. In the end, I expect a deal to get done and for Parsons to enjoy a long, successful career in Dallas.' It's just a matter of when and whether Parsons misses any games, which the Cowboys can't afford if they want to be championship contenders. ___ On Football analyzes the biggest topics in the NFL from week to week. Cowboys Headlines: Injuries hit Thursday practice; movement between Micah Parsons, Jerry?
With the NFL preseason upon us, we've reached the point of training camp when many fans would like to see their team's top players safely cocooned in bubble wrap and set aside until the games matter. Thursday showed why, with the Cowboys getting injury scares from tight end Jake Ferguson and running back Jaydon Blue. Both players left the field early; we'll have the latest on their status. Just as notable on Thursday, though, was the absence of both owner Jerry Jones and edge rusher Micah Parsons. Some assume that a new deal is finally being finalized, but in the meantime, we'll look at the biggest unanswered questions in the high-dollar drama, we'll hear what Dak Prescott had to say about the situation he himself has been in twice, and we'll see how a similar dilemma basically torpedoed an AFC squad not too long ago. Elsewhere, one Cowboys rookie is getting one-on-one help from a just-returned veteran on the other side of the ball, we'll look at two unexpected contenders at the cornerback position, we'll spotlight the rookie running backs and their unique skill sets, and we'll reveal why Brian Schottenheimer isn't revealing anything more than he has to in August. All that, plus could Dak Prescott actually play during this preseason? And Stephen Jones and Trevon Diggs may be patching up their offseason feud over his workout fines. Updates: Ferguson, Blue exit practice early :: The Mothership Link It was a rough day in Oxnard, and a busy one for the medical staff. Jake Ferguson took an awkward hit and stayed down a while before leaving under his own power, holding his lower back. Jaydon Blue was carted to the tent but was able to return to the field in a T-shirt and shorts. Neither injury seemed exceptionally worrisome by the end of practice. Micah Parsons, Jerry Jones aren't at Thursday's Cowboys practice :: ProFootballTalk Link Parsons was nowhere to be found as the team practiced Thursday. And neither was Jones, leading to some speculation that the two were tucked away in an office, hammering out a deal. There was no official word on the reason for their absences (though one outlet reports a source saying Parsons was getting treatment on his back). 'Guaranteeing someone almost $200M'? 2 big questions remain in Cowboys-Parsons standoff :: Cowboys Wire Link In the absurd drama between Jerry Jones and Micah Parsons, why hasn't the owner just sent the lucrative offer he and Parsons supposedly agreed upon to agent David Mulugheta? And why hasn't the agent simply reached out to Jones more proactively for his client? Someone- and it doesn't really matter who- in this scenario should just suck it up and act like a grown-up. Jones, Parsons rumored to have met Wednesday night :: Shan Shariff Dak Prescott says 'Eleven is Cowboy' after Micah Parsons doesn't attend practice :: The Athletic Link Prescott has been in Parsons's shoes. Twice. Both times resulted in him getting record-setting deals. As ugly as things can get during those kinds of negotiations, Prescott pointed out how quickly the relationship can be repaired. "I've got faith in the Joneses and the team as I do in Micah and his team," the QB said Thursday. 'Eleven is a Cowboy.' We already know what a Micah Parsons trade looks like :: D Magazine Link Khalil Mack was one of the best defenders in football and on his fifth-year option when the Raiders shipped him off in the lead-up to the 2018 season. Mack scored a league-high deal with another team; the Raiders went 4-12 and still haven't recovered. And given how teams are hoarding high draft picks now, Dallas wouldn't likely get what the Raiders did (two first-rounders) in that deal. The Cowboys have invested heavily in Prescott, Lamb, and even to get Pickens; sinking their defense by trading Parsons would be suicide. Stephen Jones, Trevon Diggs share moment during contentious camp :: Jon Machota What we learned from Cowboys camp on Thursday: UDFA Zion Childress earns starting reps :: Dallas Morning News Link The former Kentucky Wildcat started slow but has risen up the depth chart all camp long. Childress took reps with the starting defense at cornerback for the first time and performed well at nickel. He should get more of an opportunity versus the Rams. "I'm super excited to line up against somebody else and actually be able to hit them and put them on the ground,' Childress said. UDFA corner with whopping 56 college games played hoping to impress Cowboys coaches :: Cowboys Wire Link Bruce Harmon just completed his sixth season at Stephen A. Austin. The 25-year-old rookie is already an elder statesman in the locker room, despite having zero pro experience. He may be a long shot, but if there's a group he can break in with, it might be the Cowboys' thinned-out cornerbacks corps. Schottenheimer's Cowboys keep things vanilla on purpose, won't unleash until games matter :: Cowboys Wire Link Anyone hoping for a sneak peak of what Brian Schottenheimer plans for his offense this season will have to wait a while longer. He's "playing with a 7-iron" in the preseason, he says, keeping things simple and protecting the playbook until the regular season. If the first-time head coach has any big bells and whistles planned, he'll be able to keep them under wraps for another month. Dak Prescott drops potential Cowboys bombshell for preseason :: Link Prescott hasn't played in a preseason game in five years, but he's staying ready this weekend, just in case. "I'm all for playing," the QB said. "This one, the next one." It's pretty unlikely- especially given that he hasn't played since November due to that hamstring injury- but it's good to see the competitive juices flowing. Just-returned La'el Collins working with rookie DE :: Kyle Youmans Cowboys rookie RB showing toughness, defying expectations with inside power :: Cowboys Wire Link Running backs coach Derrick Foster says fifth-round draft pick Jaydon Blue has surprised him with his toughness, showing good power and patience between the tackles. It's a welcome bonus from a speedster who has already had his work ethic questioned in his very first offseason. Tiger Blam: Cowboys RB making big noise in camp at right time, or is coach blowing smoke? :: Cowboys Wire Link He's a one-cut, north-south power back, but can the seventh-rounder out of Clemson stand out in a crowded RB room? That's the question for Phil Mafah. He's a big-bodied power back who does have the ability to break off huge gains if he makes it to the second level. If he can prove to be more than just a short-yardage solution, he stands a chance to carve out a role on game day. Follow Cowboys Wire on Facebook to join in on the conversation with fellow fans!
