Jail for driver who caused deaths of mother and daughter during storm
Firas Zeineddine was convicted because data from his own Tesla car recorded him driving at more than 90mph on the M4 in Wiltshire during 2023's Storm Babet which brought strong winds and heavy rains to the UK.
The 46-year-old was jailed for 12 months at Swindon Crown Court on Monday after pleading guilty to two counts of causing the death by careless driving of Cheryl Woods, 61, and Sarha Smith, 40, Wiltshire Police said.
Zeineddine, from Keynsham, Bristol, was driving a Tesla Model Y in the outside lane of the motorway in October 2023 when he lost control because of the surface water.
The aquaplaning caused him to smash into a lorry which then hit the car of Ms Woods, 61, and Ms Smith, 40, who had stopped on the hard shoulder because of an earlier crash, police said.
The lorry just missed an officer from National Highways who had stopped to help them on the motorway near Chippenham.
The two women, from of Caerphilly in South Wales, died at the scene.
'The reality is that a lot of the evidence comes from the defendant's own car and the Tesla was recording from multiple cameras,' Judge Jason Taylor KC told a previous hearing.
After the sentencing, Detective Constable Sean Williams, from Wiltshire Police, said: 'This is an utterly tragic and needless incident which has seen two women lose their lives,'
'Zeineddine's speeding in the conditions was completely reckless and he admitted having impaired vision due to the amount of mist and spray that was coming off the road.
'Despite this, data from his Tesla showed his speed was in excess of 90mph.
'Once his vehicle started to aquaplane in the standing water, due to the speed he was driving, he lost complete control.
'I'm pleased he has pleaded guilty which has prevented the victims' family from having to relive the details through a trial.'
He added: 'Cheryl and Sarha's deaths sadly provide a clear illustration of why it is vital to drive to the conditions, no matter where you are.
'Any mistake or unforeseen incident, particularly at the speeds Zeineddine was driving, can have fatal consequences.'
At the time of their deaths, the women were described as devoted mothers and grandmothers in a tribute issued by their family.
It said: 'Cheryl Woods, cherished by those in her life, fulfilled the roles of a loving mother, doting grandmother, cherished sister, and a dear friend.
'Her selflessness was a defining trait, consistently prioritising her family's well-being over her own, and she took immense pride in her Welsh heritage while nurturing a deep love for nature.
'Sarha Smith, in the footsteps of her mother, unselfishly devoted herself to her family's needs ahead of her own.
'She was not only a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, but her absence leaves a void for those who relied on her radiant presence.
'Her legacy lives on through her six daughters, who will forever hold her memory close and strive to honour her with their efforts.'

Eighty traffic cones stolen from A47 at North Burlingham
Eighty traffic cones have been stolen from a stretch of a major A-road which is due to undergo roadworks. Norfolk Police said the cones were taken from the A47 at North Burlingham, where they had been put out in preparation for planned construction later that day. It is believed they were stolen between 06:55 BST and 07:30 on Tuesday. The force said the cones were grouped together rather than laid out in a line. National Highways has been carrying out works to upgrade parts of the A47 to dual carriageway. Seven nights of road closures are expected from 4 August as the single-lane section between Blofield and North Burlingham is replaced to improve safety and reduce collisions and delays. National Highways said: "Theft of highways equipment can be costly, and removal potentially poses a safety risk to everyone. "We ask anyone to contact the police if they have any further details/dashcam footage from around that time."Norfolk Police is appealing for anyone who witnessed the theft or who was travelling along the road at the time to contact them. The North Wales speed trap that's caught nearly 300 drivers doing double the 20mph limit
Nearly 50,000 speeding prosecutions were dished out in North Wales over the past year - with some drivers smashing the speed limit in places. North Wales Police issued 49,403 Notices of Intended Prosecution (NIPs) for speeding in just one year, according to new data. The drivers were all handed a notice between April 6th 2024 and April 5th this year. Based on the basic fixed speeding penalty of £100 that would be a £4,940,300 in potential fines for offending road users, with the money going to the UK Treasury. Many will have been pinged just over the limit with the new default 20mph introduced by Welsh Government in 2023 catching many out. But data gathered by Legal Expert reveals that 688 people were caught going at least double the speed limit on a 20mph road while the highest speed recorded in North Wales was 116mph on the A483. Legal Expert's research shows that almost two-thirds of those 20mph offences were on just three roads. In just one year, 298 people were caught going 40mph or over on the A5104 Pontybodkin. That includes one driver clocked at 85mph in September 2024. Earlier data found that between January 1 2024 and the end of the March this year the camera recorded a total of 8,991 offences on that 20mph stretch. Another 74 went at least double the speed limit on the A548 Greenfield, as did 70 people on Gladstone Way when passing through Hawarden. In total, 655 drivers were caught going at least double the 20mph limit in Flintshire – 95 per cent of the total across North Wales. Fourteen were in Conwy, while there were 20 such excessive speeds recorded in Gwynedd, Denbighshire and Anglesey combined. Many 20mph roads are set to revert back to 30mph limits, particularly in Flintshire where there has been a huge number of fines issued, mainly due to the relatively high number of fixed cameras in the county. An average of 67 drivers per month were recorded going over 39mph in a 20mph zone from April to September 2024, but that average fell to 46 in the following six-month period. In May last year, a person travelling on the B5129 in Pentre went 88mph, a full 68mph above the legal limit. On the A483, North Wales Police recorded one driver going 116mph, the highest speed recorded across North Wales in the past year. Nine drivers were seen travelling westbound on the A55 Rhuallt Hill at 100mph or over.
