PM Modi praising RSS in Independence Day speech insults the day: Vijayan

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for "glorifying" the RSS in his Independence Day speech, saying it was "tantamount to insulting the day itself" and the freedom struggle. In a statement issued by his office, Vijayan said the PM's praise for the RSS was an attempt to "attribute fatherhood of the independence" to the right wing organisation which was banned after Mahatma Gandhi's assassination. Terming Modi's action as a "denial of history", the CM said such "ridiculous measures cannot whitewash" the RSS which has a "poisonous history" of divisive politics. "The Prime Minister's use of the Independence Day speech to glorify the RSS is tantamount to insulting the day itself," he said in the statement. Modi on Friday hailed 100 years of RSS as a "very proud and glorious" journey of the "world's biggest NGO" and lauded all its volunteers for their dedicated service to the nation. "Today I want to mention one thing with great pride that 100 years ago an organisation was born -- the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Its 100 years of national service has been a very proud and glorious page," said Modi, who has been an RSS pracharak in the past. Vijayan further said that the praise for the RSS and the placing of V D Savarkar's image above that of Mahatma Gandhi in the Independence Day greeting card of the Union Petroleum Ministry, reveals that it is all "part of a vast conspiracy". The Marxist veteran claimed that the RSS was carrying the "dirty burden of hatred, communalism and riots". He urged the country to stand united and confront any move to bury the history of human love and reciprocity and replace it with hatred.

Major GST revamp: Modi govt proposes reducing GST slabs from 4 to 2, 99% of items currently in 28% slab to be shifted to 5%; Details here

Major GST revamp: Modi govt proposes reducing GST slabs from 4 to 2, 99% of items currently in 28% slab to be shifted to 5%; Details here The central government is planning a major change in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) structure, according to media reports. Under the proposal, there will be only two main GST slabs i.e. 5 per cent and 18 per cent. Around 90 per cent of the items currently in the 28 per cent slab will be shifted to the 18 per cent slab, and 99 per cent of the items in the 12 per cent slab will move to the 5 per cent slab. A special 40 per cent GST rate will be kept only for a few luxury and 'sin' goods like tobacco, gutkha, and cigarettes. This list will have just 5–7 items and will not include aspirational products such as refrigerators, air conditioners, and washing machines. Petroleum products will continue to remain outside the GST system even after the changes. Sectors that are labour-intensive and export-oriented, such as diamonds and precious stones, will keep their existing tax rates. Officials say the overall tax collection level will stay roughly the same at about 88 per cent. They believe that lowering GST rates for most items will encourage people to spend more, which in turn will make up for any short-term loss in tax revenue. The plan is based on Union Finance Ministry data showing that most GST revenue comes from items in the 18% slab—about 67 per cent of the total. In comparison, the 28 per cent slab brings in 11 per cent, the 12 per cent slab 5 per cent, and the 5 per cent slab 7 per cent. This proposal comes shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day speech, where he promised GST reforms as part of a 'double Diwali' for the country. The focus will be on rationalising tax rates so that all sections of society, especially the common man, women, students, the middle class, and farmers, benefit. Alongside this, the PM also announced other major initiatives, including a national deep-water exploration mission to boost energy self-reliance and the creation of an indigenous 'Sudarshan Chakra' defence system by 2035. The GST Council, which includes state finance ministers, is expected to review and possibly approve the proposal in September or October.

Dwarka to Sonipat quicker? PM Modi to open new Delhi highways on Aug 17

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate two big highway projects in Delhi on Sunday (August 17), worth nearly ₹11,000 crore. The event will take place in Rohini at 12:30 pm, where the PM will also address the public. Projects to reduce Delhi's traffic burden The two projects — Dwarka Expressway (Delhi section) and Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) — are part of the government's larger plan to reduce traffic congestion in the capital, a PIB release said. These projects aim to improve road connectivity, reduce travel time, and make commuting easier across Delhi and its surrounding areas, the release said. Dwarka Expressway: Key details • The 10.1 km Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway has been built at a cost of around ₹5,360 crore. • It will offer multi-modal connectivity to Yashobhoomi convention centre, Delhi Metro's Blue and Orange lines, the upcoming Bijwasan railway station, and the Dwarka cluster bus depot. • The stretch has been divided into two parts: -Package I: 5.9 km from Shiv Murti intersection to the Road Under Bridge at Dwarka Sector-21 -Package II: 4.2 km from Dwarka Sector-21 to the Delhi-Haryana border, linking directly to UER-II The Haryana section (19 km) of the Dwarka Expressway was inaugurated earlier by PM Modi in March 2024. UER-II stretch to boost NCR connectivity The Prime Minister will also inaugurate the Alipur to Dichaon Kalan stretch of UER-II, built at a cost of ₹5,580 crore. • This new road will ease traffic on Delhi's Inner Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, Mukarba Chowk, Dhaula Kuan, and NH09. • It includes new links to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat, which will improve industrial connectivity and speed up goods movement across the NCR. • Officials said the project will also help in diverting heavy vehicles, reducing pressure on city roads.
