Scam victim arrested after being duped into helping to scam another person out of $40,000
A 27-year-old victim of a scam was arrested after being duped into helping to scam another person out of $40,000.
The police had received a report on April 9 at about 11.50am from the 20-year-old man who had lost the amount to a scam.
He had been deceived by scammers posing as Chinese government officials, who claimed his identity had been misused in China and he had been implicated in a transnational money-laundering syndicate.
Through follow-up investigations, officers from the Anti-Scam Command and Clementi Police Division established the identity of the 27-year-old suspect, who had allegedly assisted in collecting money for the scammers.
He was arrested on the same day.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect, who is in Singapore on a Student's Pass, had himself fallen victim to the same scam. He is believed to have been manipulated into assisting the scammers and thought he was helping with official investigations.
He is being investigated for cheating as well as cheating by personation.
Cheating carries an imprisonment term of up to 10 years and a fine while cheating by personation carries an imprisonment term of up to five years, a fine or both.

Mr Trump has said he would raise Lai's case as part of negotiations with China over trade and tariffs.

China supports Thailand-Cambodia reconciliation, offers help

Mr Wang said China supports the South-east Asian countries in strengthening dialogue, and hopes they rebuild mutual trust and restore friendship, according to two statements from his ministry. He met his Thai and Cambodian counterparts separately on the sidelines of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Foreign Ministers' Meeting in China's south-western Yunnan province, readouts of the meetings showed. Thailand and Cambodia have wrangled for decades over border territory and have been on a conflict footing since the killing of a Cambodian soldier in a skirmish late in May. Clashes had turned deadly in the worst fighting in more than a decade before a ceasefire was struck in late July . Mr Wang spoke about China's readiness to accelerate the China-Thailand railway construction, encourage more investments from Chinese enterprises in Thailand, and to ensure the stability of regional production and supply chain. He also expressed hopes that Cambodia will continue strong measures for joint efforts in the region against cross-border criminal activities. For years, criminal networks have trafficked hundreds of thousands of people to scam compounds across South-east Asia, including many along the Thai-Myanmar border, where victims are forced to work in illegal online schemes, according to the United Nations.
