Over 30 years after its debut, this classic film is dominating streaming

For one of the most celebrated movies of all time, another redemption arc is on the horizon.
Released in 1994 to modest box office numbers, "The Shawshank Redemption" has since become a resounding success, landing a top spot on cinema rankings from IMDb to Rolling Stone. Now, it's making its way up the streaming charts as well.
Back on Peacock for audiences' home-viewing pleasure, the movie, which follows one prisoner's odyssey through a cruel system, broke into the platform's top 10 most-watched titles this week.
Based on a Stephen King novella, "Shawshank" tells the story of Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), who was convicted of killing his wife and her lover and sentenced to life in prison despite a plea of not guilty. While in prison, Dufresne befriends fellow inmate Ellis "Red" Redding (Morgan Freeman), known for helping to smuggle contraband into the penitentiary.
That's just 'Psycho': These 10 classic movies never won an Oscar
The movie, which spans 19 years, nabbed seven Academy Award nominations and was a critical darling, but failed to capture popular appeal at the time of its release. Audiences of the now-beloved movie seem keen to dip into the drama, with a renewed interest in Dufresne's epic and complicated story.
It's a career-defining performance from Freeman as well, so fans may want to soak up the acting legend's talent before he signs off the big screen for good.
In an interview earlier this year with USA TODAY, Freeman hinted at a possible impending retirement, saying: "I imagine … I might be at the point where I say, 'OK, y'all, I quit.'"
How to watch 'The Shawshank Redemption'
The movie is available now to stream for free with a Peacock membership and for rent on Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime Video.

"Even though it was challenging at times, having kids gave me perspective about what was important in life," she wrote. Reese Witherspoon is getting candid about balancing her busy Hollywood career with motherhood. In a recent Instagram post, the "Big Little Lies" star posted seven photos of herself with her three kids over the years, alongside captions explaining what it's like parenting while being a major player in Hollywood. "Someone asked me what raising three kids and building a career in Hollywood looked like…," the caption in the first photo reads, with a shot of Witherspoon alongside her daughter Ava Phillippe, 25, son Deacon Phillippe, 21, and youngest son Tennessee James Toth, 12. (She shares her two oldest children with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe, and her youngest with ex-husband Jim Toth.) "It looked like spending a lot of time in trailers together," the next caption reads, alongside a photo of Witherspoon and Tennessee smiling in what appears to be a trailer. "I'd cry working 14 to 17 hours, sometimes all night long, and still woke up early for carpool," Witherspoon continues on another slide caption. "I was deliriously tired." Next to a photo with Tennessee on set, she continues: "It looked like trying to say something positive about work when I got home at night. So my kids would know that my work was meaningful to me and could be fun!" In the final photo, a shot of the Oscar winner with daughter Ava, the caption reads: "In conclusion, even though it was challenging at times, having kids gave me perspective about what was important in life. Nothing was better than getting to come home and hug them and hear about their day!" View this post on Instagram A post shared by Reese Witherspoon (@reesewitherspoon)
