Dhaka: CNG drivers block Banani roads as a sign of protest
Wrapped in symbolic shrouds, the demonstrators demanded fixed routes for CNG-run auto-rickshaws operating in the capital and pledged to continue their agitation until their demands were met.
The protest began around 10 a.m. in front of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) headquarters in Banani, bringing traffic to a complete standstill on both sides of the road.
Investigation officer of Banani Police Station, Mehedi Hasan, confirmed the situation on the ground.
He said, 'CNG drivers had blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh road in Banani, halting traffic flow.'
Police are working to bring the situation under control, he added.
Earlier in the day, CNG drivers from areas outside Dhaka joined their counterparts in staging a sit-in on the main road to press home various demands. As the blockade continued into the afternoon, traffic authorities issued several updates and advisories to help commuters navigate the disruption, reported The Dhaka Tribune.
The elevated expressway remained open for outbound travel and was also accessible for vehicles moving from Uttara to Tejgaon or Hatirjheel, providing some relief to the city's strained traffic network.
To ensure public safety and manage the swelling crowds, additional police forces were deployed in the area. Authorities continued to monitor the situation closely, urging commuters to stay updated through official traffic advisories and follow the suggested alternative routes.
The protesting CNG drivers have made it clear they will continue their demonstration until their demands for fixed routes are addressed, raising concerns over further traffic disruptions in the coming days.
This demonstration has sparked a wider conversation about the regulation and management of CNG auto-rickshaws in Dhaka, which is considered to be a critical component of the city's public transport system.

Punch's rise has been nothing short of a phenomenon. It was the highest-selling car in India in 2024 and continues to hold a commanding 38% share in the sub-compact SUV segment in FY25. It currently accounts for over a third of Tata's total passenger vehicle sales and continues to show strong momentum with a healthy 15% year-on-year growth. Notably, it's also found favour among women buyers, especially in the EV version, where they make up 25% of the ownership. Govt set to roll out 80 more pink buses as demand surges
Patna: The pink bus service in state, launched on May 16 this year, has witnessed a surge in popularity among women with a six-fold increase in ridership in just two months. Over 33,000 women have availed the service since its launch with the Patna division alone accounting for more than 21,000 passengers. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Bihar State Road Transport Corporation (BSRTC) has announced plans to launch 80 additional CNG pink buses by the end of August and 35 of them will operate in Patna. Currently, 20 pink buses are in service across the state, including eight in Patna, four in Muzaffarpur and two each in Bhagalpur, Gaya, Darbhanga and Purnia. Officials said the demand for pink buses was not limited to the state capital. Districts such as Bhagalpur, Purnia, Gaya and Darbhanga have collectively recorded over 7,000 passengers, primarily students and working women, since May. "In May 2025, approximately 5,000 women used the pink bus service. By June, this number had exceeded 28,000," said a BSRTC official, adding that the numbers are continuing to rise steadily. The growing use of pink buses underlines the increasing need for safe and accessible public transport for women. "This surge highlights the demand for gender-sensitive infrastructure," said a transport department official. Each pink bus is equipped with features designed to ensure women's safety and comfort, including panic buttons, GPS tracking, CCTV cameras, charging points and soon, sanitary pad vending machines and medical kits. In addition to women drivers, the service has also deployed women conductors to make the experience more secure and reassuring for passengers. A two-phase residential training programme is being organised to prepare more women drivers for the upcoming fleet. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "The aim is not just to provide transport but to create opportunities for women behind the wheel," said an official involved in the training initiative. To make the service even more accessible, camps will be held on college campuses to facilitate the distribution of pink bus passes to students. Officials said such steps would improve women's mobility across Bihar and help embed the pink bus service as a permanent feature of public transport in the state.

Delhi extends EV policy till November as revised draft awaits clearance
The Delhi government on Tuesday extended its Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy by four months, pushing the new deadline to November 15, as a draft of the new policy is still under review and awaiting approval, senior officials aware of the matter said on Tuesday. Transport minister Pankaj Singh (PTI) Transport minister Pankaj Singh said the draft is being overhauled and is likely to take at least four months before it is finalised. 'We have extended the existing policy till November 15 for now and may extend it further if necessary,' he said. 'We are consulting experts and exploring all feasible options to ensure the public benefits from a cleaner, more sustainable transport system. We're already seeing a rise in EV registrations and growing public interest.' The current EV policy—first introduced in 2020 and lapsed in August 2023—has been extended several times since. It currently offers a purchase incentive of 25% (up to ₹5,500) for e-cycles, ₹30,000 for e-rickshaws and e-carts, and ₹5,000 per kWh of battery capacity (capped at ₹30,000) for two-wheelers. Light electric commercial vehicles are also eligible for a subsidy of ₹30,000. According to officials familiar with the matter, a revised draft has been prepared and discussed with chief minister Rekha Gupta and the transport minister. However, additional changes have been suggested and the draft will undergo another round of revisions. Once updated, it will be opened for public feedback for a minimum of 15 days before being presented to the cabinet for final approval. 'The final version will require clearance from both the cabinet and the lieutenant governor. This process is likely to take a few months,' a senior transport department official said. The cabinet had earlier discussed the draft on April 15 but held off on approving proposals that included the phasing out of CNG auto-rickshaws and fossil fuel-based two-wheelers within two years. The draft policy envisions 100% electric vehicle adoption in the Capital over the next three years. Key proposals in the draft include a complete ban on registration of petrol, diesel, and CNG two-wheelers after August 15, 2026, and replacing all CNG-powered auto-rickshaws with electric ones by August 2025. The revised policy is expected to retain the subsidy cap for more affordable EVs. 'As proposed earlier, EVs priced below ₹25 lakh will be eligible for subsidies, while costlier models will have to pay applicable taxes. The idea is to nudge manufacturers toward producing affordable EVs,' said Singh. Transport department officials said that another point that may be retained from the first draft is that households with two cars will have to mandatorily buy an EV if they plan on buying a third car. Officials added that the policy will also continue to offer incentives for setting up charging infrastructure and battery swapping stations, alongside subsidies and tax exemptions for EV purchases.
