Steamiest 90s erotic film confirmed for 'unnecessary' reboot with a twist

Metro18-07-2025
As the era of reboots and remakes rages on, one classic 90s erotic thriller is also set for a remake—this time, with a twist.
Released in 1992, Basic Instinct catapulted Sharon Stone, now 67, to global fame thanks to her starring role as Catherine Tramell.
She appeared opposite Michael Douglas as Detective Nick Curran in the first of her many femme fatale characters, its plot following the investigation into Johnny Boz's (Bill Cable) murder, in which his girlfriend is a suspect.
Things take a steamy turn, however, when the cop falls for Catherine, with the film now hailed as 'groundbreaking' for its depictions of sexuality in mainstream cinema.
As well as becoming a cultural phenomenon, it was also a commercial hit, grossing over $350million (£260m) worldwide.
Fast forward 33 years, and Basic Instinct is set to return to the silver screen once more, as the Paul Verhoeven-directed classic is getting an update.
As per Variety, with original screenwriter Joe Eszterhas on board, the reboot will be released with Scott Stuber's United Artists and Amazon MGM Studios.
Adam Griffin of Vault Entertainment will executive produce, but further details, including a title, are yet to be confirmed, excluding the rumours of the reboot being 'anti-woke', leaving fans to wonder if any famous moments will get the chop.
Not everyone is thrilled about the upcoming reboot, with many making it known that they think it's an 'unnecessary' production.
Taking to X, @CCortave24 wrote: 'Basic Instinct rules & Sharon Stone gives an all-timer performance as Catherine Tramell. Good luck trying to replicate that success because a reboot is unnecessary'.
@UygarNFT branded it a 'super bad idea', while @GenesisAcademyX argued: 'Studios need to realise that not every film needs a remake. It fails 90% of the time. We're making original stories with soul and a 70's feel. People want to see painterly classics, not Hollywood remakes.'
'Some things cannot replicated', declared @rowenmatthee, with @_MyNameIsAdam_ adding: 'So dumb. Just give us Basic Instinct 3 and bring Sharon back…'
@NicMye further argued that Stone's casting is the only thing that made the original 'watchable', and @motherquoter suggested that the revival is destined to fail.
'This didn't work with Fatal Attraction and it didn't work with Cruel Intentions, so why should it work this time? Maybe greenlight original ideas instead…', they penned.
Indeed, 1987 romance thriller Fatal Attraction, which also starred Douglas as well as Glenn Close, was made into a TV series in 2023 but was cancelled after one season.
Similarly, 1999's Cruel Intentions, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and Reese Witherspoon, was adapted for TV last year on Amazon Prime, but was also cancelled after just one series this spring.
So you could say the odds aren't in Basic Instinct's favour, despite social media predicting hugely popular actress Sydney Sweeney for the female lead in its remake.
Basic Instinct already had a sequel, released in 2006 and with Stone reprising her role as crime novelist Catherine, who is in trouble with the law again, this time in London.
Alas, the film flopped spectacularly, making $38.6m (£29m) back from its $70m (£52.1m) budget.
It also received negative reviews, with a shocking score of just 6% on review site Rotten Tomatoes, a stark contrast to the original film's 56%.
The film also received three nominations at the 2006 Stinkers Bad Movie Awards, and was branded 'godawful' and even 'painful' viewing by critics.
Speaking previously about her Basic Instinct role, Stone, whose most memorable scene saw her uncross her legs during interrogation to reveal she wasn't wearing underwear, said she kept the iconic white minidress herself.
She told The Times that, after making a TV film in the 80s, her wardrobe was sold off at discounted prices, leaving her feeling embarrassed by the thought of crew members being able to purchase her lingerie.
'I thought, 'Never again',' she said. 'I had it put into my contracts that I keep all my clothes from films, unless they are studio rentals.'
Stone added: 'I keep the white minidress from Basic Instinct in a safe but have a ton of shoes from that movie in my closet, like black split-toe Gucci heels and strappy gold-studded ones. The rest of the costumes are in storage.' More Trending
The actress has also admitted that she doesn't believe the film could be made now in the same way, saying in 2019 that Basic Instinct was 'made at the exact right moment in history because it captured all our fears and doubts and the moment of change of power for women'.
She added to Allure: 'It's still an intriguing film, but could it be made now? I doubt that it would have any form of the sensationalism it had at the time.
'When I began my career, there were only two ways we were allowed to sit: cross at the ankles or ankles under the chair.'

Screenwriter for upcoming James Bond film revealed as Peaky Blinders creator

After months of behind-the-scenes maneuvering, the next chapter in the James Bond saga is taking shape. Following the recent news that Dune director Denis Villeneuve will helm the next 007 film, Amazon MGM Studios has officially selected its screenwriter: Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight. Sources confirm that Knight will pen the script for the next installment in the long-running spy franchise, according to Deadline. The announcement follows an intensive search by Amazon MGM, which gained full creative control of the Bond series earlier this year. Knight's appointment marks a pivotal step in what the studio hopes will be a bold new era for Bond. Producers Amy Pascal (Spider-Man: No Way Home) and David Heyman (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) were among the first creative leads brought onboard, with Tanya Lapointe serving as executive producer. The team has reportedly been meticulous in assembling the next phase of Bond's cinematic legacy, holding numerous meetings over the past few months to lock down key talent. While speculation has swirled about who might step into the tuxedo as the next 007, insiders emphasise that the studio's recent focus has been squarely on script development. Knight had emerged as a frontrunner in recent weeks, but his hiring reportedly hinged on a key meeting with Villeneuve, who has been deep in production on the next Dune installment. That meeting took place last week, and sources say Villeneuve gave his enthusiastic endorsement after he was chosen as the director for Bond 26, clearing the way for Knight to officially take on the project. Knight brings with him an impressive CV. Best known for creating the BAFTA-winning Peaky Blinders, he has also written and produced acclaimed series such as Taboo (BBC/FX), SAS Rogue Heroes (BBC), and All the Light We Cannot See (Netflix), the latter earning a Golden Globe nomination for Best Limited Series. His film work includes the Oscar-nominated Dirty Pretty Things, Eastern Promises, and Spencer, as well as Locke, Serenity, and Hummingbird – projects he both wrote and directed. He was awarded a CBE in 2020 for services to drama and entertainment, and in 2023 was granted a Fellowship by the Royal Television Society for his contributions to British television. He also co-founded Digbeth Loc. Studios, a film and TV production hub in Birmingham that opened its doors last year. As development heats up, fans may still be waiting to learn who will step into 007's shoes. After well over a year of fevered speculation – ever since he was falsely reported to have officially landed the 007 gig, Aaron Taylor-Johnson has remained one of the front-runners to play Bond next. Fresh odds from Ladbrokes on Wednesday had him at 8/11, making him the first odds-on candidate in their eyes to be the next 007, after his appearance in 28 Years Later with Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes. Behind him is another hot favourite Callum Turner, next to be seen in A24 supernatural rom-com Eternity with Elisabeth Olsen and Miles Teller, and The Gentlemen's Theo James, both of whom are on 5/1. Slow Horses star and new Mr Darcy Jack Lowden is 6/1, and both Harris Dickinson and Tom Holland are 8/1. More Trending Egerton is currently 66/1 the bookmakers confirmed to Metro, having been bumped from 50/1 as recently as Friday. He started the year as 80/1 to be the next Bond, the same price as Sir David Beckham. His shortest odds were 25/1 just after he picked up his Golden Globe in 2020. With Villeneuve set to bring his signature scope and precision to the director's chair, and Knight anchoring the story, the next Bond film is already shaping up to be a high-stakes reinvention. Absolutely Everything We Know About Kirsten Connolly, Aka Lucinda In The Summer I Turned Pretty

We're all hooked on The Summer I Turned Pretty. After two years of waiting, the third instalment of the series has landed on Amazon Prime, and it's delivering all the teen, rom com vibes we could ever want. Season three takes place almost four years after the events of season 2 - meaning our fave characters are all grown up. It follows Belly, played by Lola Tung, who is in a long-term relationship with Jeremiah, played by Gavin Casalegno. Their feelings for each other are thrown into question by the arrival of her ex Conrad, played by Christopher Briney. But alongside familiar faces, we've also met some new characters for season three. One of these is Lucinda Jewel, a single-mum to Taylor, with the two sharing a tight bond in the show. Lucinda is portrayed on screen Kristen Connolly - but where might have you seen her before? Kristen Connolly is an American actress who was born and raised in Montclair, New Jersey. She began her career with recurring roles on digital shorts for CollegeHumour, and was an extra on the films Mona Lisa Smile, Meet Dave, and The Happening. She appeared on two CBS daytime soap operas, Guiding Light and As the World Turns, before taking on bigger screen roles. Kristen has been married to Stephen O'Reilly since 2023, and the couple have two children together. Kristen Connolly was born on 12th July 1980, making her 45-years-old. You might recognise Kristen Connolly from her role as Dana in the 2011 film The Cabin in the Woods, a role which shot her into the mainstream. She also starred in the horror film The Bay. Her TV roles include starring in the Netflix series House of Cards as Christina Gallagher, and as Jamie Campbell in the CBS series Zoo. She also starred in the HBO movie about disgraced financier Bernie Madoff, The Wizard of Lies, alongside Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert De Niro. In a 2019 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Connolly addressed starring in horror films. 'I enjoy scary movies, but I wouldn't say I'm an avid fan. I love both shows for different reasons, but it wasn't a deliberate decision,' she told the outlet. 'As an actor just starting out, I just want to work on projects that are, hopefully, good. I had no idea it would happen, so I'm like, 'Huh. I keep landing in these things! What's up ?' And The Cabin in the Woods was so much fun. That was really my first big job, and it was so challenging, and I still am dumbfounded [by it]. I smile every time I think about it.' Yes! Harrison Ford, 83, reveals real reason why he will never retire

Indiana Jones and Star Wars actor Harrison Ford explains why he won't stop acting Hollywood legend Harrison Ford says he has no plans to retire — even suggesting he chose the acting profession for that very reason. ‌ 'No. That's one of the things I thought was attractive about the job of an actor, was that they need old people, too, to play old people's parts,' the Star Wars actor, 83, said in a new interview. ‌ Harrison is celebrating more success and another accolade ticked off and his new chat came a few months after he pulled out of the Oscars due to illness. ‌ After decades of making great work playing the likes of Han Solo in Star Wars and Indiana Jones, he finally got his first Emmy nomination this year, for the AppleTV+ show 'Shrinking,' where he plays Dr. Paul Rhoades, a therapist who has Parkinson's disease. He modestly told Variety magazine: 'I don't think there's anything competitive about creativity, and I don't understand the need to compare and contrast one person's work to another's. If you like it, you like it; if you don't like it, look at something else. I'm grateful, but I would have done what I did — and I'll do what I'm doing — regardless of whether it's deemed worthy of mention or not. Because it's what I do. It's what I love doing. I love telling stories. I love pretending to be somebody else.' He had been working with Michael J. Fox in Season 3 which just finished filming, and Harrison's character, Paul, has been diagnosed with Parkinson's. Ford says that it was "essential" to talk to Fox as Paul continues to deal with his disease. 'Michael's courage, his fortitude and his grace, more than anything else, is on full display. He's a very smart, very brave, noble, generous, passionate guy, and an example to all of us, whether we're facing Parkinson's or not. You cannot help but recognise how amazing it is to have such grace. So he gives me both a physical representation of the disease to inform myself with, but more than that, he allows me to believe that Paul could believe that he could be adequate to the challenge. The truth is that we can't be fucking around with this just to make a joke or anything. Parkinson's is not funny. And I want to get it right. It's necessary to be correct with what we do in respect of the challenge that Parkinson's represents, and that we don't use it for its entertainment value.' Ford has overcome his own difficulties which have affected his acting, crashing his plane on a golf course in 2015 in an accident which was described as near-fatal, in March 2015. ‌ Harrison said: 'Did it have an impact? I suppose it did. I've been through a couple of big accidents that took a while to heal from. This is not something dismissed lightly, but s**t happens; it was a mechanical issue that was judged to be beyond my control. If I'd been at fault, I would have taken another direction. But I don't think it informs my life on a day-to-day basis now that I've recovered sufficiently from the physical effects.' Harrison also spoke about how America has changed and seems less 'banal and safe' with Trump in charge. He said: 'The pendulum doth swing in both directions, and it's on a healthy swing to the right at the moment. And, as nature dictates, it will swing back. ‌ But currently the issue is not who we are, but that we're not who we used to be because we've been purposefully disaggregated into serviceable political units. And that has caused the middle to become frayed and tenuous, and the middle is where we belong. Not because it's banal and safe, but because it's fair. Compromise is fair and honest. 'In politics and in life, you don't always get what you want, but you get what you get and you don't get upset. They teach us that in kindergarten, but they also teach you to fight for what you think is right. Now, because we've been disaggregated in this way, we're having a hard time finding commonality. But if you look at the economy, you'll figure out where the commonality is — it's where it always was: Rich get richer, and poor get poorer. And that ain't exactly right.'
