Kerala High Court quashes KEAM 2025 entrance exam results

The Kerala High Court on Wednesday (July 9, 2025) quashed the results of the Kerala Engineering Architecture Medical (KEAM) 2025 entrance examinations. The results were announced earlier this month.
Passing the order, Justice D.K. Singh stated that the revised method in KEAM 2025 to calculate the ranks adversely affected students who studied CBSE or ICSE syllabus in their higher secondary classes.
The order came on a petition filed by Hana Fatima Ahnus, a student who had appeared for the KEAM exam, stating that the weightage criteria was made after the release of the exam's prospectus. The court termed this 'an illegal move.'
The petitioner who appeared for the entrance exam to secure admission in engineering had alleged that the ranking procedure was amended on the date of publication of the rank list. This adversely affected her and that her rank was pushed to 4,209. A candidate who obtained similar marks in 2024 had been ranked 1,907, she said in her petition, and alleged that the amendment was 'arbitrary, illegal and malafide.'
She further contended that this was made with 'the oblique motive to do away with' the weightage given to CBSE and ICSE students.
The sudden change of the KEAM-2025 standardisation formula had left many students feeling frustrated and disillusioned as it impacted their expected ranks, following which many of them lodged complaints with the Kerala government, claiming that the normalisation method used this year was unfair and illogical.
It had been reported that last year, State higher secondary students had suffered due to the flawed standardisation process by the Commissioner of Entrance Examinations (CEE), which conducted KEAM. This year, however, CBSE and ICSE students were facing the brunt of it.
The Unaided Schools Protection Council (USPC), an umbrella body of private schools, too had moved the High Court against the new standardisation method.

Nagpur: Maharashtra legislative council members from across partylines on Friday raised concerns over the representation of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in CBSE schools' textbooks. They claimed that just 68 words about the Maratha king feature across 2,200 pages of history taught from Classes 1 to 10. The state govt responded, saying the issue has been formally raised with the Union govt and would be resolved. Raising the matter, MLC Satyajeet Tambe said it was "highly condemnable" that Shivaji Maharaj's legacy found such inadequate mention in the NCERT syllabus, which is used by all CBSE-affiliated schools. "We are promoting the NCERT curriculum across Maharashtra, yet across 2,200 pages, only 68 words are about Shivaji Maharaj. This is unacceptable," said Tambe. He added that Shivaji Maharaj's contributions should be taught not just in Maharashtra but across the country. MLC Bhavana Gawali also criticised the limited mention of Shivaji Maharaj in history books, saying the state should have pursued the matter more aggressively in Delhi. "We have a pro-Hindutva govt at the Centre; this should have been resolved already," she said. Bhoyar assured the House that Maharashtra's own curriculum being developed on CBSE lines would include maximum focus on the state's historical and geographical aspects. "Since Bhavana Gawaliji has spent five terms as MP in Delhi, I will take her guidance in resolving this issue quickly," Bhoyar said.

Barwani: A probe was ordered on Friday on a complaint against a CBSE-affiliated private school in Niwali tehsil of Barwani. The school allegedly did not allow poor tribal children admitted through Right to Education (RTE) sit with regular students. District Education Officer and district project convenor (Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan) in Barwani formed a five-member committee to investigate the complaint of rule violation and discrimination against tribal children admitted through RTE. The committee will submit inquiry report within three days. Niwali block resource coordinator Mahendra Singh Rathore told TOI that as per the complaint of 13 tribal parents of Merkhedi village, the private school run under CBSE in English medium operates from 8 am to 1 pm. The children admitted under RTE were being called to school after 1pm for the last one year. The parents said that holding separate classes in the afternoon was against the rules and it prevented students from participating in morning prayers and extracurricular activities. They also complained that the school was charging fees and then providing uniforms and books. One of the directors of the school, Piyush Sharma, told TOI, "Since the children were from rural backgrounds, they did not know Hindi or English, so the teachers had difficulty in explaining things to them. As such, their timing was separated. After the protest by the parents, they have now been made to sit with all other children." He termed the allegations of discrimination as wrong and said that the children of higher classes admitted through RTE study together.

Madurai: It is shocking that even after 75 years of Independence, people are still being kept out of temples because of their caste, observed the Madras high court , while holding that no person or group can deny access to a public temple based on caste. Justice B Pugalendhi observed that a petition filed by Vanniyakulachathiriyar Nala Arakattalai, represented by its president Murugan, seeks the removal of a prohibitory order of 2018 and permission to resume festivals and worship at the Mariamman temple in Chinna Dharapuram, Karur district. According to the trust, no caste discrimination has occurred at the temple. However, another petitioner, Marimuthu, alleges that scheduled caste devotees are not being allowed to worship. The judge took note of the report filed by the Karur district collector stating that the temple has remained closed since 2018, except for pujas, due to apprehension of communal tension and the risk of law and order disturbances. Condemning the report, the judge observed that the closure of a public temple, under the guise of a law and order concern, is a dereliction of constitutional duty. The collector cannot escape his duty by simply saying there may be trouble. It is his responsibility to handle it using the state machinery. "Police seem to think that the only way to keep peace is by denying entry to everyone. This is wrong," the judge observed. It is also the duty of the HR and CE department and the state to ensure that everyone is allowed to worship and there is no caste-based exclusion. The judge then directed the department to file a report. The judge directed both parties to cooperate with the officials and maintain peace and harmony.
