There's a fair bit of fanfare in the air. Enthusiastic CEO Dave Emerson and his executive team are onboard to mark Virgin Australia's inaugural Sydney to Doha service, the airline's long-awaited return (since 2020) to long-haul international flying, thanks to a partnership with Qatar Airways. Virgin is wet-leasing Qatar's Boeing 777s - meaning the aircraft, crew and service are Qatar's. And while there are fewer Virgin notes than I expected - apparently, there may be more to come - this is a win for Velocity members. Qatar Airways is regularly crowned airline of the year, and is the current champion.
As the lucky passenger in 1A, here's how it stacks up.
CHECKING IN: Virgin Australia doesn't offer online check-in for international flights, but who really cares when you need to arrive three hours before departure anyway?
Business class passengers get a generous 40kg checked baggage allowance and up to 15kg of carry-on across two bags.
I glide through the Virgin Priority queue, fast-track security and passport control, and land in the Air New Zealand lounge - Virgin's partner in Sydney. Bright, airy and well-run, with plenty of space, friendly staff and a constant flow of hors d'oeuvres, it's a civilised start.
The writer and minty welcome drink in her Qsuite.
THE FLIGHT: Interestingly, my seat - 1A - faces backwards, which takes some getting used to during takeoff and landing. This quirky layout in a 1-2-1 configuration allows for meetings with up to four passengers in facing suites, or double beds for couples.
After sliding the door shut and settling into my private cubicle, I dial into a work call, then videocall my dad back in country NSW. (As a former air traffic controller, I think he will get a kick out of the seven-mile-high call - he thinks it's "ridiculous" and because I'm trying to talk quietly, reckons he can't hear a word I'm saying.)
At midnight, I ask for my flat bed to be turned down. The turbulence is consistent for the next few hours but I'm too excited to sleep anyway; besides, we arrive at 10pm so I'm saving my shut-eye for the hotel.
THE CLASS: Qsuite is Qatar Airways' flagship business class product (there is no first class on this flight) and delivers a first-class experience: fully enclosed private suites, adjustable mood lighting, a la carte dining, Diptyque toiletries in a chic pouch and heaps of storage, including an esky-like box by my seat. It feels less seat, more chic little bedroom. The 15-hour flight is over too soon.
Only on VA1: Ross Lusted's osso buco. Picture supplied
FOOD AND DRINKS: On boarding, I'm welcomed with dates and cardamom-spiced Arabic coffee and a lime and mint drink - both of which I could happily make a habit of.
One of the standout features is on-demand dining: order whatever you want, whenever you want, and eat, sleep and chill on your own schedule.
Dishes designed by Australian chef Ross Lusted exclusively for this route (seared cured fish, osso buco and Basque cheesecake) sit alongside more Qatari fare including a mezze with pita bread and fresh berries with rosewater syrup. Breakfast is a smoked salmon hollandaise muffin and some very fresh granola - all the nuts on this flight are so good.
For snacking, there are a couple of standouts: steak sandwich with caramelised onion and Swiss cheese and scones with butter and jam (and how on earth do they get those warm scones so perfect on a plane?)
Every meal is served with white linen, quality cutlery and - a beautiful touch - a tiny flickering (battery-powered) candle.
I barely touch the wine list (which includes a standout Chateau Margaux 2015) because I'm hooked on the many mocktails.
ENTERTAINMENT: So many shows (I manage to binge an entire Reacher series), delivered on a huge HD screen with an easy-to-navigate interface and handheld remote. The impeccable Wi-Fi via Starlink is so good that there are announcements reminding passengers to keep the noise down and use headphones.
THE SERVICE: More efficient Qatar professionalism than warm Virgin friendliness, but cocooned in your suite, it almost feels like you have the entire cabin to yourself.
IN A NUTSHELL: Luxe Qsuite privacy, excellent food and phenomenal Wi-Fi - plus the Velocity points - makes this one flight I'll be embracing in the future.

Virgin Australia asks passengers to keep power banks in sight after suspected midair battery fire
Virgin Australia has urged passengers to keep power banks in sight during flights after a suspected midair lithium battery fire in an overhead locker. On Monday, a fire broke out on flight VA1528 from Sydney to Hobart as the plane began to land. Passengers reported smelling smoke, and when cabin crew opened the overhead compartment, they found a lithium battery on fire. The crew extinguished the fire before landing, and the bag containing the battery was removed once the plane was on the ground. No injuries were reported, and passengers disembarked safely after the aircraft landed at Hobart Airport. The airline believes the fire was caused by a power bank in a passenger's bag. A Virgin Australia spokesperson said an investigation began immediately. 'We have immediately initiated an investigation into the cause of a small fire originating from a passenger's carry-on luggage in an overhead locker during descent on flight VA1528 on Monday (21 July),' the spokesperson said. 'This investigation, conducted with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) and Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is ongoing. 'Any relevant findings from this investigation may inform permanent changes to our battery policy to ensure the safety of our guests and team members.' Following the incident, the airline is reviewing its policy on passengers having and using power banks on board flights. Passengers have been asked to keep power banks within sight and easily accessible throughout the flight, and are also encouraged not to use them to charge devices while on board. Under the airline's existing policy, all guests must carry power banks in the cabin. Peter Carter, an aviation lawyer and director of Carter Capner Law, said airlines need to take stronger steps to protect passenger safety. 'When it comes to serious on board incidents ultimately the airline is responsible for any resulting injuries, including smoke inhalation,' he said. 'Perhaps the airlines need to ask more questions and do more when it comes to on board safety. 'Given this could have erupted into a dangerous blaze very quickly, aviation authorities should be putting this incident under the microscope. 'While this is a pretty rare circumstance I have no doubt ATSB and CASA will turn their attention to this incident and we should trust their assessment on what should happen going forward.' Power banks are portable battery chargers designed to power devices on-the-go. They use rechargeable lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries that are highly flammable, can explode or vent toxic gas, said the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

Virgin could update in-flight battery use policy following aircraft fire

"This investigation, conducted with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) and Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is ongoing," the spokesperson said. They have also asked that guests travelling with power banks keep them within sight and easily accessible at all times throughout the flight. They are encouraging guests not to use power banks to charge devices while on board. The current policy states all guests travelling with power banks are required to carry them into the cabin. Other airlines followed suit with their own power bank rules including Singapore Airlines and its Scoot subsidiary, EVA Air, Korean Airlines, China Airlines, Thai Airways and Asiana Airlines. FCM Travel (owned by Flight Centre) general manager ANZ Renos Rologas told ACM (the publisher of this masthead) in April it was only a matter of time before other airlines followed suit. "There has long been concern of the safety and reliability of portable chargers, and we're starting to see carriers take extra precautions beyond the aviation industry's current requirements," Mr Rologas said. Travel Tuesday: Samsonite, Etihad, Luxury Escapes, Myer
It's not everyday you see flights to the UK fall below those to Europe, but that's exactly what's happening right now with Etihad and Qatar Airways both running incredible London flight sales. By price, Etihad wins this round with fares from Sydney from $1565 return. The best news is that you can fly in and out during the European summer at these prices, but the caveat is that you have to leave asap. Some travel dates we've found at this price are July 23 to August 17, 2025 and July 29 to August 24, 2025. If you need more time to organise your trip, Qatar Airways' sale gets you to London and back from $1692 with travel dates ranging from November 5 to December 3, 2025. Finally, if you're quick on the mark is giving Aussies the chance to score $29 seats between Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. This offer starts at 2pm AEST on July 22 and is for a limited number of tickets based on a first-come first-served basis. Whether you've just returned from Europe with a wonky wheel (let's face it, cobblestones and suitcase wheels never go hand-in-hand) or are overdue for a luggage upgrade, you won't be stuck for choice right now. That's because practically every big brand has ditched the dollars on their bestsellers. Samsonite is leading the charge with 40 per cent off selected cases when you spend $299 or more. If you can't quite meet that price mark, you'll still score 30 per cent off when you spend $149 or more. They've also got a few best sellers on clearance including the 81cm Oc2Lite in aqua for $249.50 and the 55cm City Rhythm in black for $164.50. For a wide mix of brands, Myer has taken 40 per cent off their stock of Samsonite, American Tourister, Kadi, Delsey, Monsac and Antler pieces while Amazon Australia has up to 51 per cent off the Samsonite Hi Fi and the American Tourister Curio 2. Time poor but keen to travel? Inspiring Vacations has thrown return international airfares into a slew of their most popular tours. What's more, it's stackable with their Tour Your Way sale deal, giving you even more bang for your buck. Take a private 15 day tour of Sri Lanka including flights from $4636 per person (after using code PRIVATE20 for an extra 20 per cent off) or spend 21 days on a small group tour of South America including flights for $11,495 per person. If you love the idea of luxury for less, Luxury Escapes is for you. This week families can tuck into 49 per cent off RACV Royal Pines Resort stays with four nights accommodation, unlimited Dreamworld entry and daily breakfast setting you back just $1239 per room. Those looking to dust off their passports can stay six nights at the InterContinental Bali Resort for $1899 per room or swing by Hotel Royal Hoi An - Gallery for five nights from $849 per room (up to 49 per cent off). Families taking the kids along for the ride can cash in on Babybee's latest sale.
