Police crack down on drink spiking after scares
Police say they are stepping up efforts to protect party-goers from drinks spiking in a town in Cornwall.
There were three reports of suspected spiking in Newquay in April, though investigations did not confirm the presence of harmful substances, said Devon and Cornwall Police.
Spiking involves the surreptitious administration of drugs into drinks, vapes, or through injection without the victim's knowledge or consent.
Officers were working with clubs and pubs to raise awareness, prevent spiking incidents, and improve reporting, said police leaders.
"Newquay is a popular hub for people to visit and enjoy a night out," said Insp Steve Johnson.
"While it is a safe town, we know how vital it is to play our part in making sure everyone who visits feels safe.
"We also want people to know that if they are in need of help, our officers are there for them."
He also encouraged victims of spiking to tell a trusted friend or member of venue staff or security as soon as possible.
Anyone who was a victim of spiking should also report it to police immediately to give the best chances of capturing evidence.
Insp Johnson said: "We would like to make it clear that victims are never to blame.
"We are here to listen and keep you safe. Your reports of spiking will be taken seriously and perpetrators will be pursued."
The police would also be making regular high-visibility patrols to deter crime, he said.
Insp Johnson said: "Our patrols are intelligence-led, which means officers are located in areas and times where crime would be most likely to occur.
"This means they can effectively safeguard the public and prevent crime from happening."
He urged people to use and support initiatives such as Ask for Angela, a project in place at thousands of venues nationwide which aims to provide a discreet lifeline for people who believe they are in danger.
"So, if you're on a night out in Newquay, have a great time - but please make sure you keep safe.
"Help and support are available if you need it," he said.

Man on skateboard stole $5,500 rainbow manatee statue from Wilton Manors park
A man riding a skateboard stole a unique rainbow manatee statue from a Wilton Manors park, and police are still searching for him and the piece of art a week later. Wilton Manors Police released surveillance video on Tuesday, showing a shirtless man walk up to the 3-foot-tall fiberglass manatee statue at Justin Flippen Park just before 1 a.m. June 3 and push it down from its pedestal. The man took the statue, which is valued at $5,500 and was created to honor the late Mayor Justin Flippen, and skated away with it over his shoulder, the police department said. The man was last seen skating west on Northeast 21st Court, just across from the park. It's not the first time someone has tampered with art in Justin Flippen Park. In 2023, a man was arrested after he purposefully drove into a 14-foot-tall, blue glass mosaic sculpture of a bunny, titled 'Thunderbunny,' that was worth nearly $300,000, the police department said at the time. After his arrest, the same man admitted to also vandalizing a $15,000 sculpture of a popsicle by another artist in nearby Rachel Richardson Park just a few days earlier. Police say a man intentionally drove into a $200,000 sculpture. The artist says it won't discourage him. Wilton Manors Police ask anyone who might be able to identify the man who stole the manatee statue or anyone with information about where the statue is to call Det. Man accused of baby murder found gaming by police
A man was found gaming on his phone by police after shaking his baby daughter so hard he caused "catastrophic" brain injuries, a court has heard. Thomas Holford, 24, is accused of murdering Everleigh Stroud, who was rushed to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital in Margate, Kent, on 21 April 2021. She remained there in a vegetative state until she died, aged 14 months, on 27 May 2022. Holford, of Ramsgate, who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in November last year, denies murder and causing actual bodily harm. On Tuesday, jurors at Canterbury Crown Court heard that Everleigh also had bone fractures, bruising to her face, atrophy to her eyes leading to her going blind and injuries to her anus. Prosecuting, Eloise Marshall KC told the court: "There is no dispute those injuries were inflicted by Thomas Holford," adding that they had been caused deliberately. At the time of the incident, Holford was living with his then 16-year-old girlfriend and her parents at an address in Wallwood Road, Ramsgate. His partner had stayed with a friend on 20 April to celebrate her birthday, leaving Holford to care for Everleigh overnight, the court heard. The next morning Everleigh's grandmother Kelly Stroud called 999, telling the operator the five-week-old baby "looked like she was in agony" and was unresponsive and barely breathing. Police attending the scene remarked that Holford appeared to be in a "good mood" as he played games on his phone while his daughter was being rushed to hospital. They also noted a bag of herbal cannabis and a grinder next to a baby's bottle in the room where he had slept with Everleigh. Ms Marshall added Holford "showed little emotion" and did not answer the majority of police questions when interviewed, except to say that he would not do anything to hurt his daughter. Wife, 3 More Suspects Arrested After Husband's Honeymoon Murder
A woman suspected of murdering her husband during their honeymoon has turned herself in to police, the BBC reported. Authorities allege that Sonam Raghuvanshi, 25, hired professional hitmen to kill her husband, 30-year-old Raja Raghuvanshi, during their honeymoon to the Indian state of Meghalaya. Sonam and Raja, who were wed on May 11 'in a ceremony blessed by both families,' chose Meghalaya as a honeymoon spot because of its 'very beautiful valleys,' Raja's brother, Sachin Raghuvanshi, told the outlet."Their marriage was arranged four months back, and they were both happy and there had been no fights between the couple before or after marriage," Raja's second brother, Vipin Raghuvanshi, said. On May 24, four days after they departed for their trip, Sonam and Raja were reported missing. A feverish search undertaken by officials came to an end one week after it began when officers discovered Sonam's corpse at the bottom of a gorge. His throat had been slit, and he was missing his wallet, a chain, and a gold ring. Sonam remained missing until the morning of June 9, when she surrendered to authorities in the Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh. At this time, police have identified her as 'the main suspect.'In addition to Sonam, three more suspects—all of whom hail from the couple's home state—were arrested Monday morning in surprise raids. "One person was picked up from Uttar Pradesh, and another two accused were apprehended from Indore. Sonam surrendered at the Nandganj police station and was subsequently arrested,' Director General of Meghalaya police Idashisha Nongrang explained. "Only Sonam can clarify," he said. "If she's guilty, she should be punished."Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma promised there would be a "major breakthrough" in the case within the next week.
