Indian Express2 days ago

The number of flight slots at the Pune International Airport has been increased by 15 from 220 to 235, announced Pune MP and Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol Sunday. This development can pave the way for an increase in the number of flights operating from the Pune airport and bring relief to passengers.
According to a press release, the increasing demand from airlines and passengers necessitated the allocation of more slots. Mohol reached out to the Air Force as the Pune airport is also a defence airbase. Acting on the request, Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh issued a formal letter approving the expansion of slots between 6 am and 10:29 pm.
'Big relief for Pune flyers! With the cooperation of the IAF, 15 more civil flight slots have been added during peak hours at Pune International Airport, raising daily movements from 220 to 235. This is our dedicated step to ensure faster and smoother journeys for you. Happy Flying Punekars !' said Mohol in a post on X.

Considering the growth of the industrial, IT, and education sectors in Pune, the demand for domestic and international flights has increased. The increase in slots will provide opportunities for new flights and direct connectivity to some new cities, with an expected increase in flights to Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad. Airlines will also get an opportunity to operate flights during the morning and evening rush hours.
Mohol said, 'We are trying to make an international airport at Purandar fast, but our priority is also to empower Pune International Airport at various levels. As part of this, efforts are being made to get more slots to increase the number of aircraft. Which has been successful and now the number of available slots has increased to 235. This will increase the number of flights and Pune's air connectivity will be further strengthened.'

Union Minister Piyush Goyal discusses multilateral trade concerns with WTO trade ministers

ANI 04 Jun 2025, 12:10 GMT+10 Paris [France], June 4 (ANI): Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal on Wednesday participated in the WTO Trade Ministers gathering in Paris, France, at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Ministerial Council minister discussed concerns regarding the WTO (World Trade Organisation) and multilateral trade.'Participated in the WTO Trade Ministers gathering on the margins of the OECD Ministerial Council Meeting in a very good discussion on several issues concerning WTO and multilateral trade,' Union Minister tweeted on social media 'X'.On Tuesday, speaking to ANI, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General of the World Trade Organisation, said, 'We need India as a leader 'in the 14th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC14), which will take place in Yaounde, Cameroon, from March 26 to 29, 2026.'India is a leading country, and India is doing well. So India needs to open the way for other developing countries. For example, on investment facilitation for development. We want India to support because so many developing countries, 90 out of the 126 who are members, would like to move with this. But for agriculture, we also need to listen to what India's issues are and try to be as supportive as we possibly can,' the WTO DG addedThe WTO DG also raised issues of repositioning and possible reforms to the trade body. 'Goods trade is still taking place on WTO terms, MFN terms, and members want to safeguard that, but there are things that also don't work. Let them put that on the table. What is it that the US doesn't like? Put that on the table. What do Africans not like about the way the organisation? Put that on the table. Let's collect these and then let's try to reform it because most members think that it is a very valuable organisation, but it should be repositioned'. India's GDP Growth In 2025-2026 Estimated To Be Highest Among G20 Nations: Report

Quick Read Summary is AI generated, newsroom reviewed. The OECD's 2025 Economic Outlook Report predicts India's GDP growth will lead G20 nations at 6.3% in 2025 and 6.4% in 2026. Amid global economic slowdowns, India aims for a $32 trillion economy by 2047, focusing on increased business ties with the EU. The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) on Tuesday released its 2025 Economic Outlook Report at a press conference held in its Paris headquarters. The report estimates that India's GDP growth (in real terms) will continue to be the highest amongst G20 nations in 2025 and 2026, touching 6.3% and 6.4% respectively. The report was released as delegations from member states and partners such as India assembled in Paris for an informal WTO Ministerial-level meeting. "India is looking to become a 32 Trillion economy by 2047. This exponential growth will be possible because of our talent, and I'm here to reiterate people-to-people contact,' said Piyush Goyal, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, while speaking at the India-France Business Conference. The Union Minister is in the French capital for the OECD Ministerial meet. 'Our razor focus is to make it easier to do business in India,' said Goyal as he reiterated the vast opportunities in India for those looking to do business and invest in the country. However, global growth figures are not expected to witness a positive trend according to the OECD, which estimates that the global economy is on course to slow down from 3.3% last year to 2.9% in 2025 and 2026. The Paris-based organisation's estimates come at a time of global disruptions - tariff threats from the US under the Trump administration and geopolitical tensions in Eastern Europe and Middle-East. "Additional increases in trade barriers or prolonged uncertainty will further lower growth prospects and likely push inflation higher in countries imposing tariffs," said the OECD Secretary General Mathias Cormann as he presented the report. Despite these global uncertainties, India's economic forecasts look on track, and the country hopes to increase business with the European Union as well as France. The European Union (EU), which consists of 27 nations, views the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) as important for strengthening economic ties with India. India and the EU are reaching for a comprehensive FTA instead of an interim deal. French minister of foreign trade Laurent Saint-Martin said that a deal can come through as early as 'in the coming weeks and months'. 'India is one of our priorities and I know the European Commission really wants to accelerate (FTA),' he added.

Madras High Court says yes to Aadhaar checks for online rummy, poker players

The Madras High Court has upheld Tamil Nadu's law that regulates online real-money games like rummy and poker. The law sets limits on age, betting amounts, playing time, and advertising, and requires Aadhaar verification in two stages. The court ruled the state government has the right to enact such laws as online gaming affects public health. It dismissed privacy concerns, stating public interest outweighs privacy. This fills a regulatory gap while pending central rules come into force. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads State's authority to regulate is clear Filling a regulatory gap Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Privacy vs Public interest The Madras High Court has backed Tamil Nadu's law that regulates online real-money games such as rummy and poker. The law sets limits on player age, betting amounts, playing time, and advertisements. It also requires a two-step Aadhaar verification process for players. The court rejected petitions from online gaming companies challenging these restrictions, stating the rules are valid and necessary.A division bench of Justice S M Subramaniam and Justice K Rajasekar made a clear point about the potential risks of online real-money games. They said, "In true essence, the online real money games is a trade activity, which, if left unregulated, has immediate implications on health of the public." This highlights the court's concern about the wider social effects, beyond just business gaming companies argued that only the central government has the power to regulate these platforms, especially since the Information Technology (IT) Rules, 2021, already offer some oversight. The court did not agree. It noted, "Both the Union and state govts have power to enact laws in their own respective subject matter apart from the common pool as enabled in List III (concurrent list). This court cannot hold that state is barred from enacting laws regulating online real money games. It is covered under the subject matter of public health and sanitation which comes under List II (state list)."This ruling confirms that Tamil Nadu's government acted within its rights to pass the court also pointed out that the IT Rules, 2021, related to online gaming "is yet to take effect and remains unenforceable as of today." This means there is no current central regulation in place to control online real-money games properly. The judges recognised this gap and supported the state's decision to introduce rules that protect players and the public. They said, "This court views that the state is fully within its competence to enact laws pertaining to online real money games."One challenge to the law was the requirement for players to verify their identity with Aadhaar. Opponents claimed this infringed on privacy rights. But the court rejected this concern, explaining, "Right to privacy carries with it its own limitations and cannot be claimed in absolute. When put on a scale, a compelling public interest outweighs right to privacy."This statement makes clear the court values the need to protect the public from harm above the privacy concerns in this ruling sets a strong precedent. Online gaming platforms must now follow strict rules on who can play, how much money can be bet, how long games can be played, and how they advertise. They must also use Aadhaar verification to prevent misuse or addiction. This marks a shift towards stricter, more localised control of the online gaming industry.
