EuroBasket serves as a quadrennial occasion during which European basketball is celebrated and the continent's best players compete to determine which country's roster stands supreme.
But there is an increasingly likely chance that this summer's edition of the tournament will not feature one of the sport's best players in the world: Greece national team talisman and Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Nikos Papadogiannis, a Greek basketball insider working for the outlet Gazzetta, reported on Friday that conversations between the Bucks and the Hellenic Basketball Federation on the topic of insurance payments have become increasingly tense in the last few days.
"There may be a need for some form of apology or player intervention if things go wrong," Papadogiannis wrote. "Otherwise, we could have a problem.
"Many details remain confidential, but it's clear Milwaukee is frustrated with the Greek federation, accusing them of arrogance and amateurism. The Bucks cite missed insurance deadlines and a lack of transparency regarding national team activities, and they claim the federation has taken an aggressive tone in correspondence. They act like they don't realize we hold all the cards, sources say."
Papadogiannis went as far as to predict that Antetokounmpo's odds of suiting up for Greece this summer are "a generous and optimistic fifty-fifty or... sixty-forty [in favor of playing]."
The aforementioned insurance payments are the reason why the Bucks have not provided written permission for Antetokounmpo to participate in EuroBasket. The hesitancy on their part resides in the fact that FIBA's insurance policies cannot cover the full sum of Antetokounmpo's big-money NBA contract should he get hurt during the tournament; as a result, that written permission is necessary.
Nikola Jokić and Luka Dončić are two players who, like Antetokounmpo, have needed approval from the Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers, respectively, to compete in the tournament. Their paperwork has been processed already, and both players are playing in exhibition games with their national teams.
Antetokounmpo is currently with the Greece national team, but he is not cleared to participate in any team activities until permission to do so has been granted by the Bucks.

Forest sign French forward Kalimuendo

French striker Arnaud Kalimuendo has signed a five-year contract with Nottingham Forest, the Premier League club announced on Monday. According to French media, the transfer paid to ex-club Rennes is believed to be at least 30 million euros ($35 million). "Nottingham Forest is delighted to announce the signing of Arnaud Kalimuendo, who joins the club on a five-year deal," read a statement on the English club's website. The 23-year-old came through the ranks at Paris Saint-Germain, before enjoying a breakthrough season at Ligue 1 side Rennes last year when he netted 18 times in 34 appearances in all competitions. Prior to joining Rennes in 2022, he made five appearances for PSG and enjoyed success during loan spells at Lens -- scoring 21 goals in 65 outings. "When I heard about the interest from Forest, I was honoured. This is a proud moment for me, joining a team who had a strong season last year and a club with great history," said Kalimuendo. "I'm ready for the challenge, and I arrive here with good experience. I had a good season last year with goals and assists but I want more and want to reach a new level here." Two-time European champions Nottingham Forest finished the 2024/25 season in seventh place after surprisingly spending much of the season in the Premier League's top three. Before the start of the new campaign, manager Nuno Espirito Santo endured a disappointing pre-season -- no wins and only one goal scored in seven matches -- and a disappointing transfer window. However, Forest kickstarted the season with a comfortable 3-1 win over Brentford on Sunday and new signings have begun arriving at the City Ground. The recent additions of winger Dan Ndoye, playmaker Omari Hutchinson and ex-Manchester City midfielder James McAtee have bolstered Nuno's squad. "It's been a busy few days for us — the culmination of a lot of hard work from our staff over a number of weeks," said Forest chief football officer Ross Wilson. jta/cyj/nf/mw

Napoli striker Lukaku may need surgery on thigh injury

NAPLES, Italy (AP) — Napoli striker Romelu Lukaku may require surgery after sustaining a left thigh injury during a preseason friendly, the Italian champions said Monday. The Belgium international was substituted in the 2-1 win over Olympiacos on Thursday. Tests showed Lukaku has a 'high-grade' damage to the thigh muscle in his left leg, said Napoli, which added that the striker 'has already begun his rehabilitation program and will also undergo a surgical consultation.' Napoli, which didn't give a potential timeframe for Lukaku's absence, begins the defense of its Serie A title against Sassuolo on Saturday. Belgium will also be keen to know the seriousness of the injury to its all-time record scorer, with World Cup qualifiers scheduled for the team in September, October and November. ___ AP soccer: The Associated Press
