Europeans angry with Musk still aren't buying his cars as Tesla sales drop for fifth month in a row

CTV News20 hours ago

NEW YORK — Europeans still aren't buying Teslas with figures out Wednesday showing sales plunged for a fifth month in a row in May, a blow to investors who had hoped anger toward Elon Musk would have faded by now.
Tesla sales fell 28% last month in 30 European countries even as the overall market for electric vehicles expanded sharply, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association. The poor showing comes after Tesla's billionaire CEO had promised a 'major rebound' was coming last month, adding to a recent buying frenzy among investors.
They were selling on Wednesday, pushing the prices down more than 4% in early afternoon trading.
Musk had said Tesla was sure to get a boost once the company was done retooling its factories to produce a new version of its biggest seller, the Model Y. But that was finished months ago, and the new models are widely available. Investors are now hoping that a cheaper Tesla expected to be out later year will help reverse the sales decline.
Overall, battery electric vehicle sales rose 25% in Europe compared to a year earlier. The market for EVs was particularly strong in Germany, where Musk has angered potential buyers by publicly supporting the far-right, anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany party in elections. Overall EV sales there leapt 45%.
China's SAIC Motor was the big winner for the month with its European sales of EVs and other kinds of cars jumping 38%. That has allowed the company to leapfrog Tesla, which a year ago was selling more cars in the region.
SAIC sold 18,716 vehicles last month versus Tesla's 8,729.
The sales drop for Tesla comes at a crucial time for the company as it launches a test run of its driverless 'robotaxis' service in Austin, Texas. Musk says that if goes well, he expects to introduce the service in several other cities in quick succession and have as many as a million of the automated cabs on roads by the end of the year.
Reviews so far have been mostly good, but the service is limited to a dozen or so cars and some passengers have circulated videos of problems during their rides, including one showing a robotaxi heading down a lane for opposing traffic.
Federal traffic safety regulators said Tuesday they were looking into the videos.

U.S. economy shrank 0.5% between January and March, worse than earlier estimates revealed

NEW YORK — The U.S. economy shrank at a 0.5 per cent annual pace from January through March as President Donald Trump's trade wars disrupted business, the Commerce Department reported Thursday in a downgrade from its previous estimate. First-quarter growth sank under a surge of imports as companies in the United States rushed to bring in foreign goods before Trump could impose tariffs on them. The Commerce Department previously estimated that the economy fell 0.2 per cent in the first quarter. The January-March drop in gross domestic product — the nation's output of goods and services — reversed a 2.4 per cent increase in the last three months of 2024 and marked the first time in three years that the economy contracted. Imports expanded 37.9 per cent, fastest since 2020, and pushed GDP down by nearly 4.7 percentage points. Consumer spending also slowed sharply. And federal government spending fell at a 4.6 per cent annual pace, the biggest drop since 1986. Trade deficits reduce GDP. But that's just a matter of mathematics. GDP is supposed to count only what's produced domestically, not stuff that comes in from abroad. So imports — which show up in the GDP report as consumer spending or business investment — have to be subtracted out to keep them from artificially inflating domestic production. The first-quarter import influx likely won't be repeated in the April-June quarter and therefore shouldn't weigh on GDP. In fact, economists expect second-quarter growth to bounce back to 3 per cent in the second quarter, according to a survey of forecasters by the data firm FactSet. Thursday's report was the Commerce Department's third and final report on first-quarter growth. The first look at April-June GDP growth is due July 30. Paul Wiseman, The Associated Press

Could This Be the Smartest Dividend Stock to Buy in Summer 2025?

Realty Income (NYSE: O) is one of the largest real estate investment trusts, or REITs, in the market, owning more than 15,600 properties in the U.S. and Europe. Despite generally strong results from its business, the stock is down about 11% from its 52-week high and more than 25% from its all-time high reached just before the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the company's business continues to perform quite well, and there are plenty of growth opportunities ahead, despite its large scale. In a nutshell, this could be a rare opportunity for long-term investors to buy shares at a bargain. Realty Income's business: The quick version Realty Income is a real estate investment trust that focuses on net lease properties. If you aren't familiar with the term, a net lease is a type of commercial real estate leasing agreement that generally has a long initial term (10-plus years) with annual rent increases built in, and requires tenants to pay taxes, insurance, and most maintenance costs. It is also commonly called a triple net lease. Net leases are most common among single-tenant properties, and Realty Income owns 15,600 of them. About three-quarters of its rental income is from retail tenants, and it also has a significant number of industrial properties, with smaller concentrations in agricultural, gaming, and other types. Don't let the word "retail" lead you to believe this is a riskier business model than it actually is. Realty Income's tenants are specifically selected for their recession resistance, as well as their lack of potential for e-commerce disruption. Most of the company's retail tenants are in one or more of three categories: Nondiscretionary: Retailers that sell things people need. Examples are drugstores and grocery stores. Discount-oriented: Retailers that offer deals that are tough to match for online competitors. Think dollar stores. These businesses tend to do better during recessions. Service-based: Retailers that sell a service, not a physical product. Fitness centers are a good example, and by definition, these businesses cannot be easily disrupted by e-commerce. Realty Income's business is designed to produce a steady income steam that grows predictably over time. And due to smart capital allocation when acquiring new properties, the company has the potential to create significant shareholder value over the years. The proof is in the numbers. Realty Income first listed on the public markets in 1994, and since that time has generated a 13.6% total return for investors, handily beating the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC). Not only that, but the stock has a dividend yield of 5.6%, and the company has increased the monthly payout for 111 consecutive quarters. Growth potential is more than you think Realty Income is one of the largest REITs in the market, and many mistakenly believe that it has limited growth potential ahead of it. Even its core net lease retail property type is a multitrillion-dollar market, and it has some growth verticals that are equally (or more) massive that are still in the relatively early stages of growth. For starters, there is a massive opportunity in industrial real estate, the company's second-largest property type. Realty Income has only been in Europe for a few years, and this is an $8.5 trillion market where less than 1% of properties in the company's investable universe are already owned by public net-lease REITs. Gaming properties are another vertical Realty Income has recently started to pursue, and most recently, the company is capitalizing on the massive demand for data centers through a partnership with data center REIT leader Digital Realty Trust. Why is the stock down? The short answer is that REITs are highly sensitive to interest rates, and the elevated interest rate environment has pressured the entire sector -- especially companies with the most consistent cash flow, like Realty Income. However, the business is performing just fine. Even in the challenging interest rate environment, Realty Income is finding value-creating ways to invest new capital, continues to grow the bottom line, and its portfolio is 98.5% occupied. At the current price, Realty Income's stock trades for about 13.4 times expected full-year funds from operations (FFO), the real estate equivalent of earnings. That's a historically cheap valuation, and it's also rare to be able to buy shares at a dividend yield greater than 5%. With an excellent history of delivering for investors, Realty Income looks like an excellent opportunity in 2025 for patient investors. Should you invest $1,000 in Realty Income right now? Create Account The University of Southern California freshman and son of former all-star player Gilbert Arenas told reporters during a press conference Wednesday that the steering wheel of his electric pickup lost responsiveness before he drove into a fire hydrant in Los Angeles in April. He awoke to the Cybertruck engulfed in flames and struggled to breathe as the cabin filled with smoke. 'I try to open the door, and the door's not opening,' Arenas said. 'I didn't think I had enough time.' Arenas said he jumped into the back seat of the car to 'check for any cracks, anything, anything I could use to get out. I start panicking, just rushing to get out.' Eventually, Arenas managed to kick through one of the Cybertruck's windows and was pulled out by bystanders. He was put into a medically induced coma due to extreme smoke inhalation and was released from the hospital less than a week after the crash. Photographer: David Paul Morris/Bloomberg Photo by David Paul Morris / Bloomberg Tesla Inc. advises customers in the Cybertruck owner's manual that, in the event the vehicle has no low-voltage power, occupants are unable to use the buttons that open doors from the inside. Exiting the vehicle instead requires using manual door releases designed to be used only in situations when the truck has no power. The Cybertruck was one of the most anticipated new vehicles of the last few years in the US auto market. Within 15 months of sales, however, Tesla recalled the model eight times. In its latest safety campaign initiated in March, the company called back all the Cybertrucks it had produced and sold to replace pieces of steel trim that risked coming loose and creating a hazard for other motorists. Tesla has touted the Cybertruck's five-star crash safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and featured a crash-testing image in its latest earnings report. Cybertruck received a 5-star rating from NHTSA as well,' Tesla said in a March post on X. The company didn't respond to a request for comment on Arenas' remarks. Door Precedent The Cybertruck door issue has come up before. The family of one of three college students who died in a Cybertruck that crashed near Oakland, California, in November filed a wrongful death lawsuit earlier this year in a bid to gain access to the pickup and better understand how their daughter died. An autopsy showed Krysta Tsukahara, 19, wasn't physically injured by the crash itself. Instead, she died of asphyxiation when she couldn't open the doors. Tsukahara's father, Carl, told Bloomberg News in April that one of the questions he hoped the suit would answer was: 'Why couldn't Krysta get out?' Arenas said he didn't want to place blame on anybody else for the single-vehicle crash he was involved in. 'I want to take full responsibility on everything I do,' he said. 'If I would have hurt somebody, that would have really took a toll on me.' Tesla shares traded up 0.2% as of 7 a.m. Thursday in New York. The stock has fallen 19% this year.
