India Successfully Tests Prithvi-II, Agni-I Ballistic Missile Off Odisha

NDTV17-07-2025
New Delhi:
India on Thursday successfully test-fired nuclear-capable short-range ballistic missiles Prithvi-II and Agni-I from an integrated test range off the Odisha coast, demonstrating its strategic deterrence capability.
The test-firing of the missiles, conducted by the elite Strategic Forces Command, validated all operational and technical parameters, according to the defence ministry.
On Wednesday, India successfully test-fired the indigenously developed Akash Prime missile in Ladakh that has been customised to operate at an altitude above 4,500 metres.
The test-firing of the missiles came over two months after the May 7-10 military conflict between India and Pakistan.
The Prithvi-II missile has a range of around 350 km and it is capable of carrying a payload of up to 500 kgs. It can carry both conventional as well as nuclear warheads.
The Agni-I missile has a range of 700-900 km, and it can carry a payload of 1,000 kgs.
Both Prithvi-II and Agni-I missiles have been an integral part of India's nuclear deterrence.
"Short-range ballistic missiles -- Prithvi-II and Agni-I -- were successfully test-fired from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha on July 17," the ministry said in a brief statement.
It said the launches "validated all operational and technical parameters. "These tests were conducted under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command," the ministry said.
On the test-firing of the Akash missile, the ministry said it carries added significance as it follows the "exceptional performance" of India's indigenously developed air defence systems during Operation Sindoor.
Akash Prime is an upgraded variant of the Akash weapon system built for the Indian Army.
The test-firing of the missile in Ladakh assumed significance as it is close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
"India on July 16 achieved a significant milestone by successfully destroying two aerial high speed unmanned targets at high altitude in Ladakh by Akash Prime, the upgraded variant of Akash weapon system for the Indian Army," the ministry said in a separate statement.
It said the weapon system is customised to operate in altitude above 4,500 metres and has latest upgrades, including an indigenously developed radio frequency seeker.
"Based on the operational feedback from users, various upgrades are made to improve the operational effectiveness, demonstrating the advantage of the ecosystem created for the indigenous weapon system," the defence ministry said.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh complimented the Indian Army, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and the industry on this "remarkable achievement", it said.

SIR disrupts Parliament; JP Nadda calls it double standards

JP Nadda NEW DELHIl Parliament proceedings were disrupted on Thursday as opposition parties protested the revision of Bihar's electoral rolls, while in RS, leader of the House JP Nadda accused them of displaying "double standards" by walking out when home minister Amit Shah started replying to the debate on Operation Sindoor on Wednesday, insisting that a reply come from PM Modi. Nadda cited a precedent from the Congress-led UPA government era, when a discussion on the home ministry's statement on the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks was replied to by the then PM and home minister in LS, and then by the home minister in RS. LoP in RS Mallikarjun Kharge, however, later clarified that the opposition had not walked out against Shah's replying to the debate but to protest his remark "main akela hi apko nipat lunga (I can handle you myself)". "We said PM is here, please call him to the House...," he said. Parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju underlined that the PM replied to the debate in LS for 1.42 hours on Tuesday and said the govt has collective responsibility and the opposition doesn't get to decide who will speak. Nadda sought to remind the opposition that the Chair had made it clear during a BAC meeting and in RS that it's the govt's prerogative to decide which minister should speak and reply.

Parliament Monsoon Session: Opposition protests over SIR, PM reply continue, both Houses adjourned

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day on Thursday after repeated disruptions by Opposition members over the issue of revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. The House was adjourned soon after Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal made a suo motu statement on the imposition of 25% tariff by the US, asserting that India will take all steps necessary to protect its national interest. Proceedings in the Lok Sabha too were adjourned for the day soon after Goyal made a statement on the US tariff announcement amid Opposition's protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar. The Upper House, earlier in the day, witnessed three adjournments amid uproar by Opposition MPs over no reply by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the debate on Operation Sindoor in the House; they also raised the SIR issue. The first adjournment happened soon after the proceedings began at 11 am; the second one when the House met at 12 noon; and the third when the House met again at 2 pm. The Chair adjourned the proceedings till 4.30 pm as Opposition members continued their noisy protests. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said Opposition MPs had raised slogans demanding the Prime Minister come to the House, triggering uproar from Trinamool Congress MPs. 'The behaviour of TMC MPs is not right… The way Derek O'Brien is behaving is not right,' Rijiju said. He said PM Modi had already replied to the debate in the Lok Sabha for one hour and 42 minutes on Tuesday. 'He (PM) presented all the facts to the nation through the House. The Home Minister (Amit Shah) is capable of replying to the debate,' Rijiju said. He said the government has a collective responsibility, and the Opposition does not get to decide who will speak. As soon as Rijiju finished his statement, the Chair adjourned the House till 4.30 pm. When the House met again at 4.30 pm, Goyal made his statement amid sloganeering by Opposition members. 'The government attaches the utmost importance to protecting and promoting the welfare of our farmers, workers, entrepreneurs, exporters, MSMEs and all sections of industry. We will take all necessary steps to secure and advance our national interest,' he said. The Opposition members continued raising slogans against the SIR and demanding that the Prime Minister come to the House, following which the House was adjourned for the day. In the Lok Sabha, Speaker Om Birla tried to take up Zero Hour but the Opposition members continued to raise slogans. Birla then adjourned the House till 2 pm. When the Lok Sabha reassembled at 2 pm, it could function for only a few minutes. Amid sloganeering by the Opposition members, papers were laid in the House. Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad, who was in the Chair, urged the members to go back to their seats. When the protests continued, he adjourned the proceedings till 4 pm. Soon after the House met at 4 pm, Birla called for Goyal to make his statement. As soon as the statement got over, the Opposition MPs rushed to the Well and raised slogans. The Speaker then adjourned the House for the day. The House, meanwhile, congratulated the scientists for the successful launch of the GSLV rocket that placed an Earth observation satellite, jointly developed by ISRO and NASA.
