Target Corp. has named longtime executive Michael Fiddelke as its next chief executive officer, succeeding Brian Cornell when he steps down on February 1, 2025.
The leadership change comes as the retailer struggles with declining sales, consumer boycotts, and intensifying competition from Walmart and discount chains.
Fiddelke, currently Target's chief operating officer, has been with the Minneapolis-based company for two decades. He is credited with modernizing Target's supply chain, expanding digital services, and improving operational efficiency. In May, he was tapped to lead a new office focused on faster decision-making to accelerate growth.
The incoming CEO outlined three immediate priorities: restoring Target's merchandising authority, improving the in-store shopping experience by keeping shelves stocked and stores clean, and investing in technology to strengthen both physical and digital operations.
Cornell, 66, has led Target since 2014, steering the company through a major data breach, a store-brand revitalization, and the pandemic-era surge in sales. While he repositioned Target as a style-driven retailer and expanded same-day fulfillment through the Shipt acquisition, sales momentum has faded in recent years. Comparable sales have now declined or remained flat in eight of the last ten quarters.
Industry analysts expressed mixed reactions to the internal appointment. While some praised Fiddelke's track record, others said hiring from within risks perpetuating 'entrenched groupthink' that may not address deeper strategic challenges.
Target reported a 21% drop in net income in its latest quarter, with a 1.9% decline in comparable sales. Analysts note the brand has lost traction with higher-income shoppers, while Walmart and TJ Maxx gain ground.
Cornell will transition to executive chair of the board as Fiddelke takes over, tasked with reviving Target's 'Tarzhay' reputation for affordable style.

MUMBAI: Indian importers for the first time bought palm oil from Colombia and Guatemala as producers sitting on surplus stocks offered cargoes at steep discounts, four trade sources with direct knowledge of the matter said. Indonesia and Malaysia dominate global palm oil supplies and are the main suppliers to India, which imported 9 million tons of palm oil in 2023/24. Colombia and Guatemala, the fourth- and sixth-largest producers of palm oil, usually export their surplus stocks to Europe and North America. Rising production in the two Latin American countries and their ability to divert their supplies could weigh on benchmark Malaysian palm oil futures, industry officials said. Colombian and Guatemalan cargoes were offered at steep discounts on a free-on-board (FOB) basis to ensure their landed cost at Indian ports remained lower than supplies from Malaysia and Indonesia, said a Mumbai-based dealer at a global trading house, who declined to be named in line with company policy. Indian buyers prefer quick shipments, and the shipping time from South America is about 45 days, but the discounts were enough to lure them, the dealer said. India's July palm oil imports fall as soyoil jumps to 3-year high The landed cost of South American palm oil at Indian ports was more than $10 per ton lower than supplies from Indonesia and Malaysia, another Mumbai-based dealer said. Crude palm oil (CPO) is currently being offered at about $1,165 a ton, including cost, insurance and freight (CIF), in India for October delivery. Freight to ship palm oil from the Americas is about $90 per ton, compared with $45 from Southeast Asia, said Sandeep Bajoria, chief executive of Sunvin Group, a Mumbai-based brokerage. Vessels will be loaded at South American ports in September to arrive at India's Kandla port in October, said a New Delhi-based dealer. Latin America exports half of its 5 million tons of palm oil, and India's first purchases from the region could open the door to more supplies, said Aashish Acharya, vice president at Patanjali Foods Ltd, a leading importer of edible oils. Palm oil demand has been rising and will remain robust in the coming months due to the festival season in India, Acharya said. Festival season starts in September and sees increased demand for edible oils to produce sweets and fried foods. Demand usually dips again during winter months.

Vietnamese rice prices rose this week as domestic supplies tumbled, while Indian rates also ticked higher on rupee appreciation and improved demand. Vietnam's 5% broken rice was offered at $399 per metric ton on Thursday, up from $395 a week ago, according to the Vietnam Food Association. 'Prices are higher as domestic supplies are running low,' a trader based in Ho Chi Minh City said. Traders added that Vietnam's efforts to boost production of fragrant rice and rice of higher quality over the recent years have helped offset the plans to suspend rice imports by the Philippines, which has appetite for common white rice. Vietnam exported 364,624 tons of rice in the first half of this year, raising total shipments in the year to August 15 to 5.88 million tons, an increase of 3% from a year earlier, according to official data. India's 5% broken parboiled variety was quoted at $371-$376 per ton, up from the last week's $369-$374 while Indian 5% broken white rice was priced at $363 to $369 per ton this week on rupee appreciation and improved demand. Thailand's 5% broken rice moved up slightly to $365 to $370 per tonne from $355 to $360 per tonne last week, but more global supply was still pressuring prices, traders said. Indonesia announced good yields and that it would reduce imports, while the Philippines will not import 2-month old rice, said a Bangkok-based trader, adding that India said it would release its stockpile. Globally, supply is good in every country and it's making exporters struggle, said another trader. Thailand's cabinet approved measures worth 106 billion baht ($3.26 billion), which include direct payments and loan guarantees, to support rice farmers and stabilise prices, an official said on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Bangladesh's rice imports rose to a seven-year high of 1.44 million tons in the last fiscal year ending in June, as flood damage cut domestic output — the largest volume since 2017/18 financial year, when imports reached 3.16 million tons, official data showed.
