Joe Rothwell urges Rangers to kill off Panathinaikos tie
Russell Martin's men struggled for the most part before decisive goals from 19-year-old Findlay Curtis and debutant Djeidi Gassama, either side of Panathinaikos right-back Giorgos Vagiannidis receiving his marching orders after picking up the second of two yellow cards for a foul on Curtis.
Ahead of the second leg in Athens – which follows a friendly against Middlesbrough at Ibrox on Saturday – Rothwell was asked if the Light Blues can feel in command of the tie.
'I think we have to now, yeah,' he said.
'Obviously, 2-0, it's a good scoreline, especially in this format.
'So we'll go out there and obviously we won't be looking to defend it. We'll try and go out there and win the game and score as many goals as we can.
'It (2-0 win) can be huge. I think he (Martin) said in his press conference, it was not going to be a season-defining game but we wanted to go out there and put a show on and really show how he wants to do things.
'I think we managed to do that, controlled the game as we like to do and just a bit disappointed that we didn't go and probably kill the game off a little bit more.'
The Light Blues should have been behind before Curtis opened the scoring in the 52nd minute, with Martin having to settle his new charges down at the interval before an improved performance in the second half.
Rothwell said: 'He said to just stick to what we do.
'We went away from it a little bit, in terms of how we want to play, and in the first 10, 15 (minutes) I think we started the game really well and then probably came away from it a little bit.
'And then obviously with them going down to 10 men, we've managed to control the game and probably disappointed we didn't probably get a few more in the end, but we can't complain, it's a win and we take a lead over there.'
Rothwell was impressed and inspired by his first taste of a European night at Ibrox.
He said: 'Loved it. Obviously you hear stories from the outside, but when you actually get out there and experience it, it's fantastic and I'm sure the fans are going to be behind us in every single game and we'll need them.
'There'll be times where it might be a bit tough for us, but I'm sure they'll get behind us and then get us over the finish line.
'I think you can really see what the manager wants us to do and how we want to play and I thought it was obviously another good test for us and we came through it in the end.'

Hearts will soon compete in their first match of the 2025/26 season as they prepare to welcome Aberdeen to Tynecastle. The Jambos have enjoyed several successful outings in recent weeks, beating Sunderland 3-0 in a pre-season friendly, and enjoying Scottish League Cup wins over Dumbarton, Stirling Albion and Hamilton. Hibs' season started at Dundee and they also have a European juggling act to manage. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad However, as the new season kicks off, there is still plenty more taking place in the transfer window. Here is the latest news from Hearts' Scottish Premiership rivals ahead of the 2025/26 season... Ross County star in EFL and SPFL battle Ronan Hale is the subject of much interest from around EFL and SPFL clubs The Belfast-born forward has, however, also been of huge interest to a number of other EFL clubs, including Luton Town, Reading FC and Wycombe Wanderers. Hale enjoyed an excellent campaign for Ross County last season, scoring 15 goals in 38 outings. It was, however, ultimately not enough to stop the Staggies' relegation but his efforts have attracted attention from around the football leagues with a 'bidding war' reported to be unfolding. Kilmarnock sign ex-Arsenal player Hearts rivals Kilmarnock have announced Dominic Thompson as their latest acquisition. Taking to the club's website, it was said: 'The left back has experience in both English and Scottish football and will be available for selection against Livingston this afternoon. Welcome, Dominic!' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Thompson did indeed feature for his new side against Livingston, coming on for Tom Lowery in the 85th minute as the Ayrshire club draw 2-2 at Rugby Park. The left-back's career started with Arsenal, progressing through the Hale End Academy before he signed with Brentford in 2019. In 2022, he departed the Bees, joining Blackpool with whom he was with until heading north of the border earlier this year. He made 15 appearances for Motherwell before his contract expired this summer and he was able to join Kilmarnock on a free transfer. Pundits embroiled in Hearts debate Sky Sports pundits Charlie Adam and Kris Boyd came to blows in heated debate when discussing how soon we could see Hearts challenging the Old Firm for the title. Speaking on The Warm-up, while Charlie Adam believes that the 'pool and power' of the Old Firm squads will keep them far from their fellow Scottish Premiership sides for the foreseeable future, Kris Boyd was adamant that it may only be a few years until Hearts push for that trophy. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Chris Sutton asked Adam and Boyd that when taking into consideration Tony Bloom's investment in the Tynecastle side, how likely is a Hearts top place finish to which Adam said: 'I don't think so. Because of the financial power of Rangers and Celtic.' 'I still think that the pool and power of the quality of players Rangers and Celtic get, I don't see anyone getting in between the. I think the two clubs are too far ahead. You can have analytics, looking at data of the players - do you think Rangers and Celtic are not looking at analytics of players? Of course they are.' Boyd, however, was vehemently opposed to this view, confidently saying: 'Do I think it's possible for Hearts in a few years? Yeah, I do.'

Gray delighted as Hibs respond to Midtjylland loss with win at Dundee
David Gray praised Hibernian for making light of their European exertions to kick off their William Hill Premiership campaign with a sure-footed 2-1 win away to Dundee. The Easter Road boss admitted it was a 'difficult' decision to make just one change to the side that started Thursday's extra-time defeat by Midtjylland in the Europa League. However, Gray was rewarded with a strong display as Kieron Bowie's first-half double proved enough to overcome a Dee side who pulled one back through Fin Robertson. 'I'm delighted because after everything the players put in Thursday night, everybody would be looking at today's game wondering would there be a hangover, how will the players react the first time they went Thursday-Sunday,' the manager said. 'The players reacted in the best possible way with a real professional performance. I thought we controlled the game from start to finish.' Gray was heartened to see recently-capped Scotland forward Bowie get off the mark so early in the campaign after he endured an injury-disrupted first season at Hibs. 'That's the reason he was brought to the club,' he said. 'He's suited to Scottish football as well, with the physicality, he really enjoys that side to the game. 'The confidence levels will be high with the Scottish recognition as well, which is fantastic for him on a personal note, but he's working hard every day, he's getting fitter, he's getting stronger and really benefiting from a strong pre-season.' Gray was typically coy when asked about the future of defender Lewis Miller, who is understood to be close to joining Blackburn. The Australian is currently recovering from injury. 'There has been interest in him, but right now he's still a Hibs player and until he's not, my focus is on trying to get him back on the pitch as quick as we can,' he said. Dundee boss Steven Pressley said he saw some 'green shoots' of recovery against the Hibees after his side's demoralising Premier Sports Cup group-stage exit last month. However, the 51-year-old, taking charge of a match in Scotland's top flight for the first time in 15 years, felt they were 'nervy' in possession and was keen to stress the scale of the task he inherited in June. 'Almost every single goal from the team of last season was not there today,' said Pressley, whose talismanic captain Simon Murray missed out with injury. 'It's a big rebuild. I'm not trying to pull the wool over anybody's eyes. 'There's a lot of hard work ahead. We probably need another six players in to bolster the squad and it's a real challenge.' Hibs' motivation at Dundee revealed as David Gray gives Lewis Miller transfer update after big win
What a difference a year makes for Gray and Co as Pressley sees 'green shoots' in defeat Sign up to our Football newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! Learn More Sorry, there seem to be some issues. Please try again later. Submitting... Hibs manager David Gray applauded his players' application as they took just one game to get what they needed five matches to earn last season. It's the first weekend in August and the Easter Road side already have their first victory of the league campaign. Now he knows the trick is to follow it up quickly with another victory, against Kilmarnock next weekend ideally. That was the problem last season. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad It took until November last year for Hibs to collect a second league win, something which put Gray under almost intolerable pressure. This run included a 4-1 defeat at Dens Park against Dundee, who Hibs dispatched with considerable ease at the same venue in between tough European assignments to give their league campaign instant uplift. Hibs defender Rocky Bushiri overpowers Dundee forward Ashley Hay during the 2-1 win. | SNS Group 'It was a big part of my motivation today,' Gray acknowledged, when asked about last season's initial struggles. 'I heard a lot of people saying last season, 'imagine we had just a poor start, not a very poor start last season'. 'So the mindset of the players is, here's the first opportunity to try and put that right. It was always going to be a difficult day coming up here because of Thursday night (against Midtjylland), people looking at it saying, how can Hibs bounce back? Is there going to be a hangover? Have they got a squad to do it? And this was the best way to answer that. I thought it was a real professional performance and a fully deserved the three points." Hibs head to Serbia, where they face Partizan Belgrade on Thursday in a Conference League qualifying tie, on the back of a win earned by a quickfire first-half double from the impressive Kieron Bowie. 'I think he showed that's the reason why he was brought to the football club, because of the qualities he's got,' said Gray. 'You've seen that, I've mentioned a lot about being suited to Scottish football as well. The physicality, he really enjoys that side to the game and he was always one that was going to benefit from a strong pre-season. We're getting (the benefit of) that just now.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Hibs don't rotate despite busy schedule Gray stuck with ten of the 11 players who lost in heart-breaking fashion to Midtjylland on Thursday at Easter Road. 'You can get caught up in how many minutes players have played, the emotional side of it,' he said. 'It's not as if we have gone Sunday, Thursday, Sunday, Thursday, Sunday, Thursday. So the players are fresh, they're ready to go and they're all playing with confidence. They want to try and stay in the team.' Only Jamie McGrath was left out and he came on in the second half for Junior Hoilett, who had replaced him in the starting XI. Gray was later asked about right back Lewis Miller, who has been linked with a move to Blackburn Rovers and is currently sidelined with injury. "It's been well documented there has been (interest) but right now he's still a Hibs player," said Gray. "Until he's not, my focus is trying to get him back on the pitch as quick as we can." It was a dispiriting start for Dundee and in particular their fans, who booed the team off after watching them muster just two shots on goal, one of which was their counter from Fin Robertson when they were already 2-0 down. Hibs head coach David Gray gives out instructions at Dens Park. | SNS Group Pressley stressed that he's realistic and made the point that nearly all the goals from last season were out of the team. As well as the departed Lyall Cameron and Scott Tiffoney, captain Simon Murray was injured. The manager said he saw 'green shoots' but the team will need time, with reinforcements a must. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Murray's return from a knee injury sustained in last weekend's League Cup win over Montrose is also a matter of great urgency, with a trip to Ibrox to face Rangers looming.
