His father Arvind Joshi was a respected theatre artist and actor in Gujarati theatre, which naturally exposed Sharman to the world of acting at a young age. Sharman's aunt Sarita Joshi is a well-known face in Marathi and Gujarati theatre. His elder sister Manasi Roy Joshi is a well-known face in the entertainment industry who is married to actor Rohit Roy.
Although Sharman was always in the public eye, he maintained a low-key personal life and focused more on his movies and work rather than focusing on the limelight. He is married to Prerna Chopra, the daughter of Prem Chopra at the age of 21. The couple has three children.
