Flood monitoring and traffic management at the 141 known waterlogging hotspots within Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits was among the issues discussed at the monsoon preparedness meeting at the Telangana Integrated Command and Control Centre (TGICCC) in Banjara Hills on Monday (May 26).
Hyderabad Police Commissioner C.V. Anand stressed on the pre-deployment of teams at these vulnerable points and field-level coordination among GHMC, Traffic Police, Water Board, Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (TGSPDCL), Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) and volunteer groups to ensure quick response during downpours.
To facilitate seamless coordination, he called for optimal use of TGICCC's advanced monitoring and communication systems. He urged all departments to anticipate challenges proactively rather than reacting to crises after they unfold.
The session also reviewed measures for uninterrupted power supply during storms, diverting floodwater to nalas, and responding to seasonal disease outbreaks. The structural integrity of buildings was another point of concern, with officials stressing immediate identification and intervention regarding dilapidated structures.
Director General of the Telangana State Disaster Response and Fire Services Y. Nagi Reddy called for a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for monsoon-related emergencies. He emphasised the inclusion of all key departments, especially medical and health, to streamline responsibilities and response mechanisms.
Deployment of Aapda Mitra volunteers and NGOs for emergency support and use of services like the SACHET mobile app to ensure public access to timely alerts, was also discussed.

TGICCC holds coordination meet with IMD in Hyd'bad

Hyderabad: The Indian Meteorological department (IMD) Hyderabad head Dr K Nagaratna on Thursday highlighted the utilisation of advanced tools such as Doppler weather radar-imaging, met satellite images, numerical weather predictions and GIS-based special imaging to integrating met data into the city's emergency response systems. A high-level coordination meeting was convened under the leadership of Director V B Kamalasan Reddy at the Telangana Integrated Command and Control Centre (TGICCC) War Room. The meeting focused on strengthening monsoon preparedness. During the meeting, Dr Nagaratna provided comprehensive insights into IMD forecasting capabilities, including nowcast, mid-range, extended range, and long-range forecasts. She discussed synoptic features like low-level jet (LLJ), tropical easterly jet (TEJ) and Tibetan plateau positions, which are crucial for accurate weather forecasting. The meeting emphasised the importance of integrating IMD data with TGICCC advanced systems, including the integrated traffic management system (ITMS), automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) system, public addressing system (PAS) and variable message display boards (VMBs). A review of the types and technical specifications of cameras currently deployed at TGICCC was also conducted to ensure optimal functionality during the monsoon. Key discussions included analysis of heavy rainfall over the past decade, advance of the Southwest Monsoon-2025 and frequency of cold and heat waves. Dissemination of advisories, alerts and warnings through various media, including SACHET mobile application, was also deliberated to ensure timely communication with officials and the public. The meeting concluded with a collective commitment from all departments to work in synergy, leveraging technological advancements and meteorological data to ensure safety and well-being of citizens during the monsoon.

TGiCCC and IMD join forces to bolster monsoon preparedness in Hyderabad

In a move to enhance the city's monsoon preparedness and integrate meteorological intelligence into the city's emergency management ecosystem, a coordination meeting was held at the Telangana Integrated Command and Control Centre (TGiCCC), here on Thursday. The session was chaired by TGiCCC Director and former IPS officer V.B. Kamalasan Reddy and brought together key stakeholders, including officials from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). The focus of the meeting was to integrate meteorological intelligence into the city's emergency management ecosystem. Discussions were held on syncing IMD data with systems already in place at TGiCCC, such as the Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS), Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), Public Addressing Systems, and Variable Message Display Boards. Head of the IMD Hyderabad centre K. Nagaratna and her team presented an in-depth overview of the department's forecasting systems. She detailed the various forecasting models, from nowcast to long-range predictions, and pushed the use of cutting-edge tools such as Doppler weather radar imaging, satellite data, numerical weather models, and GIS-based special imaging. A technical review of the surveillance infrastructure, especially the types and specifications of cameras in use, was also conducted, aimed at ensuring full operational efficiency during heavy rains. The panel revisited rainfall patterns over the last 10 years and examined trends linked to both extreme precipitation events and temperature fluctuations, including cold and heat waves. The need for timely dissemination of alerts via multiple channels, notably the SACHET mobile application, was strongly emphasised to keep both officials and the public informed. The meeting concluded with a call for a multi-departmental, tech-enabled response plan backed by robust meteorological data that is critical to navigating the challenges of the monsoon season in Hyderabad.

Pre-monsoon works face hiccups as water logging grips parts of city

Hyderabad: With the onset of monsoon, the city is witnessing heavy water logging, thanks to the incomplete pre-monsoon preparations. The residents alleged that officials had ignored the seriousness of water logging and had taken no step to prevent the water inundation in localities. Despite repeated warnings and past experiences of flooding of various areas across the city, the monsoon related work appears to be moving at a slow pace. There was no proper desilting of manholes, storm water drains, and nalas which can prevent water logging. In several areas, there was no desilting and if completed following the heavy rains, heaps of desilted mud remained uncleared from the roads. Though the civic body has taken measures to ensure that no rainwater to be inundated, it has been observed that the roads were blocked due to water logging. According to activists, the status of monsoon-related works including desilting and works under the Telangana government's Strategic Nala Development Program (SNDP) in GHMC limits is still underway and nowhere near completion, despite passing the deadline. 'A brief 15-minute downpour is leaving parts of main roads in knee-deep water, which exposed the unpreparedness for the monsoon season,' said Mohammed Ahmed, an activist. Activists said that construction activities must cease during the season. However, the works are continuing in different parts of the city, posing risks to drivers during heavy rainfall, as the entire stretch where the works are going on are dug up, and filled with potholes. Venkat Rao a resident of Surya Nagar colony in Shaikpet said, 'During heavy rainfall, numerous internal roads within our locality see severe water logging, with water levels rising up to the knees. It is a challenge for us in accessing the main road. In these flooded streets, we found ourselves stranded in the middle of a submerged road, unable to proceed further in our vehicles.' During rains, various areas in the city are witnessing water logging including the worst affected colonies in Tolichowki, Attapur, LB Nagar, Uppal, Begumpet, Kukatpally, Miyapur, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Vanasthalipuram, Hayath Nagar, Somajiguda, Ameerpet, Nampally, among others. These areas have been witnessing massive flooding during rains. Also, several localities in the Old City like Talabkatta, Tadbun, Yakutpura, Dabeerpura, Darulshifa, Bahadurpura and Old Malakpet. Moreover, the GHMC identified over 141 locations that are affected by water logging and measures were taken to address the issue permanently.
