Hey chatbot, is this true? AI 'factchecks' sow misinformation

The Star03-06-2025
WASHINGTON: As misinformation exploded during India's four-day conflict with Pakistan, social media users turned to an AI chatbot for verification – only to encounter more falsehoods, underscoring its unreliability as a fact-checking tool.
With tech platforms reducing human fact-checkers, users are increasingly relying on AI-powered chatbots – including xAI's Grok, OpenAI's ChatGPT, and Google's Gemini – in search of reliable information.
"Hey @Grok, is this true?" has become a common query on Elon Musk's platform X, where the AI assistant is built in, reflecting the growing trend of seeking instant debunks on social media.
But the responses are often themselves riddled with misinformation.
Grok – now under renewed scrutiny for inserting "white genocide", a far-right conspiracy theory, into unrelated queries – wrongly identified old video footage from Sudan's Khartoum airport as a missile strike on Pakistan's Nur Khan airbase during the country's recent conflict with India.
Unrelated footage of a building on fire in Nepal was misidentified as "likely" showing Pakistan's military response to Indian strikes.
"The growing reliance on Grok as a fact-checker comes as X and other major tech companies have scaled back investments in human fact-checkers," McKenzie Sadeghi, a researcher with the disinformation watchdog NewsGuard, told AFP.
"Our research has repeatedly found that AI chatbots are not reliable sources for news and information, particularly when it comes to breaking news," she warned.
'Fabricated'
NewsGuard's research found that 10 leading chatbots were prone to repeating falsehoods, including Russian disinformation narratives and false or misleading claims related to the recent Australian election.
In a recent study of eight AI search tools, the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University found that chatbots were "generally bad at declining to answer questions they couldn't answer accurately, offering incorrect or speculative answers instead."
When AFP fact-checkers in Uruguay asked Gemini about an AI-generated image of a woman, it not only confirmed its authenticity but fabricated details about her identity and where the image was likely taken.
Grok recently labeled a purported video of a giant anaconda swimming in the Amazon River as "genuine", even citing credible-sounding scientific expeditions to support its false claim.
In reality, the video was AI-generated, AFP fact-checkers in Latin America reported, noting that many users cited Grok's assessment as evidence the clip was real.
Such findings have raised concerns as surveys show that online users are increasingly shifting from traditional search engines to AI chatbots for information gathering and verification.
The shift also comes as Meta announced earlier this year it was ending its third-party fact-checking program in the United States, turning over the task of debunking falsehoods to ordinary users under a model known as "Community Notes", popularised by X.
Researchers have repeatedly questioned the effectiveness of "Community Notes" in combating falsehoods.
'Biased answers'
Human fact-checking has long been a flashpoint in a hyperpolarized political climate, particularly in the United States, where conservative advocates maintain it suppresses free speech and censors right-wing content – something professional fact-checkers vehemently reject.
AFP currently works in 26 languages with Facebook's fact-checking program, including in Asia, Latin America, and the European Union.
The quality and accuracy of AI chatbots can vary, depending on how they are trained and programmed, prompting concerns that their output may be subject to political influence or control.
Musk's xAI recently blamed an "unauthorized modification" for causing Grok to generate unsolicited posts referencing "white genocide" in South Africa.
When AI expert David Caswell asked Grok who might have modified its system prompt, the chatbot named Musk as the "most likely" culprit.
Musk, the South African-born billionaire backer of President Donald Trump, has previously peddled the unfounded claim that South Africa's leaders were "openly pushing for genocide" of white people.
"We have seen the way AI assistants can either fabricate results or give biased answers after human coders specifically change their instructions," Angie Holan, director of the International Fact-Checking Network, told AFP.
"I am especially concerned about the way Grok has mishandled requests concerning very sensitive matters after receiving instructions to provide pre-authorized answers." – AFP

Forget ChatGPT-5, Malaysian companies say it's better to ‘go local' in using AI: Juwai IQI

PETALING JAYA: Despite all the hype about OpenAI's new ChatGPT-5 model, some Malaysian business leaders say companies should instead 'go local' for artificial intelligence (AI). Doing so can create jobs, protect Malaysian consumer data, make artificial intelligence more Malaysian and boost companies' bottom line, according to insights released today by Juwai IQI. Juwai IQI Group CEO Kashif Ansari explained, 'You fall behind if you don't use artificial intelligence, but costs can grow quickly. By 'going local,' as I call it, a typical large Malaysian company can save up to RM1.7 million per year, depending on usage rates. You also get the benefits of data privacy and security, customisation and automation. ''Going local' is my way of saying two things. First, we are using open-source AI models that are offered by their creators for 'free' to the larger community. These models are usually not quite as capable as the latest commercially available models on the market but are free of ongoing external usage costs. Second, we are hosting these models on our own servers. That means we never send our data to the big AI companies' servers.' He said most of what a typical business in Malaysia does can be accomplished with these open source AI models. 'Yes, we still use GPT-5, amongst others, but only for a fraction of our AI needs. We found that we can do most of what we need here in Malaysia by going local,' he added. Juwai IQI Group COO and CIO, Nabeel Mungaye, said: 'When you use artificial intelligence models from providers like OpenAI or Alphabet, you pay for usage: the more you use, the more you pay. But when you use open-source models hosted on your own servers, there are no ongoing usage fees. This is critical if you have high-volume AI applications, like customer service chatbots or PDF summarisation tools.' 'I've run some back-of-the-envelope numbers. A typical large Malaysian company that has embraced the use of AI for things like customer support, PDF summarisation, and marketing could end up paying over RM1.7 million (US$410,000) per year in usage fees from a service like OpenAI. On the other hand, running an open-source model on a local server for those same needs could cost as little as RM63,000 (US$15,000) per year. You would essentially just pay the cost of electricity and maintenance for a powerful server,' he added. He explained, 'Here's how I arrived at those cost estimates. For a customer service chatbot processing one billion tokens annually, the cost using a paid mini-model would be approximately RM76,000 (US$18,000). PDF document summarisation is actually a very demanding task for AI, and handling some 500,000 documents per month could cost around RM1.65 million (US$390,000) per year. Lastly, the marketing content generation could reasonably cost about RM10,500 (US$2,500). When you add these costs up, you get RM1.7 million (US$410,000).' Mungaye said, 'Going open source and local also allows us to make the artificial intelligence we use more Malaysian. We can fine-tune or train the model we use to understand local slang and cultural nuances in Malay, Mandarin, English, and other languages. 'We can also teach it industry-specific terminology, so it is more accurate and relevant for the ways that we use it. In sum, by 'going local,' Malaysian companies like us can get the benefits of AI at a lower expense while also protecting their costumers' data and giving them a better service,' he added.

OpenAI launches cheapest ChatGPT plan in India

BENGALURU: ChatGPT maker OpenAI on Tuesday launched ChatGPT Go, a new India-only subscription plan priced at 399 rupees (US$4.57; RM19.28) per month, its most affordable offering yet, as the company looks to deepen its presence in its second-largest market. Global companies often offer cheaper subscription plans for India's price-sensitive market, targeting the nearly one billion internet users in the world's most populous nation. The plan allows users to send up to 10 times more messages and generate 10 times more images compared to the free version, while also offering faster response times. Message limits increase with higher-tier subscription plans. ChatGPT Go is designed for Indians who want greater access to ChatGPT's advanced capabilities at a more affordable price, the Microsoft-backed startup said in a statement. The top-tier version of ChatGPT – ChatGPT Pro – is priced at 19,900 rupees/month in India, while ChatGPT Plus, its mid-range plan, costs 1,999 rupees/month. India is OpenAI's second-largest market by user base after the US and may soon become the biggest, Altman said recently. – Reuters
