Activists to campaign for saving waterbodies

Time of India11 hours ago
Trichy: Members of the Tamil Nadu Rivers Retrieval Movement have announced a statewide campaign to restore waterbodies and watersheds, aiming to increase the state's water storage capacity.
They also urged the govt to improve its efforts on water conservation.
Addressing reporters in Trichy on Monday, activists highlighted that among the 18,000 micro watersheds in the state, 6,000 are classified as irrecoverable. "The govt and the district administrations should take efforts to recover at least the remaining 12,000 watersheds under schemes such as MGNREGA to enable them to conserve water up to their full capacity.
The authorities must also create new waterbodies to store 200tmcft of water every year," said D Gurusamy, an advocate and the coordinator of the outfit.
The movement announced that it will start the statewide campaign from Trichy on Sept 29. Members would meet the collectors in each district to put forward their demands. We would also consider legal courses of action if ours demands are not met, they said.
The representatives regretted that a majority of the surplus water released at 1 lakh cusecs from the Mettur dam recently was directed to the sea without any utility. They claimed that around 20% of waterbodies have disappeared since independence due to various reasons and sought safeguarding of the existing waterbodies by restoring them to their full capacity.
S Yoganathan, the movement's secretary, and representatives of Thanneer Amaippu K C Neelamegam and K Sathish Kumar were also present.

Flyover height poses hurdle for Ganesh Chaturthi processions

Hubballi: With the Ganesh Chaturthi nearing, the 20-feet tall flyover between Channamma Circle and Indira Glass House is emerging as a hurdle. Idols like Hubballi Ka Raja stand 23 feet tall, needing 26 feet clearance, once loaded on vehicles. Organisers are in a fix over this issue and are approaching authorities to suggest an alternative procession route. D Govind Rao, founder president, Shree Gajanan Mahamandal, Hubballi, told TOI that a discussion is ongoing among Ganesh festival organisers in the city. "Since the stretch is not yet open for vehicles, we are unaware of the height of the flyover. If the height is less than 25 feet, we will approach the police seeking an alternative route for the procession of Ganesha idols that will be immersed on the 7th and 11th days of installation. We feel the Old Bus Stand road is a good route for the procession. However, we will discuss with the concerned Ganesh Mandals and make a decision," he explained. Sanjay Meharwade, president, Hubballi Ka Raja Shree Gajanan Utsav Samiti, said that this time they have ordered a 23-feet idol in Bengaluru. "Our trolley will be 2.6 or 3 feet in height. Hence, we need a height space of about 26 feet. If we demand the Girani Chawl, RNS Kalyan Mantap route, again we will have to pass under the same flyover from IT Park to Hosur Circle. So we are confused about whether we should take the procession on Neeligin Road and Bharat Mill Road," he expressed. Raveesh CR, DCP crime and traffic, said that no request has been received from Ganesha festival organisers in this regard. "If we get such a request or information from festival organisers, we will check the space and take action," he assured. MLA Mahesh Tenginakai confirmed that the height of the flyover from the ground to the beam of the upper road is 20 feet. "Major idols like Hubballi Ka Raja need a minimum height space of 26 feet. We feel the trolleys can move by the side of the flyover. However, we will have to check the width of the trolleys and the available space alongside the flyover. Hence, we will conduct a check by concerned officials on Aug 16 before coming to a conclusion," he asserted. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Toiling dawn to dusk, Silent Heroes Cleaned Vande Bharat Platforms

Nagpur: As the spotlight shone on the Nagpur-Pune Vande Bharat inaugural run at Nagpur station on Sunday, it was the unsung heroes working behind the scenes who truly made the platforms sparkle. Platforms 8 and 9 stood out, gleaming under the bright lights, thanks to the tireless efforts of a dedicated group of sanitation workers. For the past week, these individuals have been toiling from the crack of dawn, ensuring every inch was spotless for the high-profile occasion. Among these diligent workers were Shital Ragde, Akshay Lokhande, Nikhil Dharme, Mamta Mor, Pragati Namre, Anjali Sonksure, and Sagar Bavne. Their tasks ranged from sweeping and scrubbing to polishing, with some even managing the upkeep of eight train coaches single-handedly. Pragati Namre, one of the workers, expressed her pride, saying, "It makes me proud that because of us, people could enjoy their train travel. Everything begins with cleanliness." Her colleague, Akshay Lokhande, echoed her sentiments, adding, "Events like this happen rarely, and when they do, we feel we are part of something important. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas Prices In Dubai Might Be More Affordable Than You Think Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Quote Undo People see the train, but few see the ones who make the surroundings shine." For many of these workers, Sunday was a rare occasion when they received breakfast and medical facilities. "We have been working here for 15 years but still get only Rs15,000 instead of Rs20,000. Usually, there's no breakfast, no medical help, nothing extra," shared Mamta Mor, who has been on the job since her teens. Despite the long hours and modest pay, the excitement of witnessing the Vande Bharat train up close was palpable. "The train was beautiful. It felt good knowing we played a small role in such a big day," said Sagar Bavne. As the ceremony concluded and the crowds dispersed, the sanitation workers quietly resumed their duties, brooms in hand, preparing the station for the next arrival. For this silent crew, the pride in their work lingers long after the applause fades, their contributions shining brightly in the background of the day's events. Out shopping, female home guard regulates traffic in Gajapati, earns praise

Bhubaneswar: For most professionals, their duties and responsibilities conclude with the end of their shift. However, for home guard Gubbala Ramulamma, 47, duty is not bound by time, place or attire. Dressed in a sari and carrying a shopping bag at a local market in Paralakhemundi in Gajapati district on Sunday, she encountered a traffic jam. Without hesitation, she sprang into action, managing the traffic while still holding her bag of vegetables. The act was captured on video by a passerby and has since gone viral on social media, earning her widespread admiration for her commitment to duty beyond her working hours. "My shift (though not traffic duty) was scheduled for the afternoon. Around 8am, I visited our local market to buy vegetables when I noticed a traffic jam near Palace Chowk. Even though I was not on duty and not in uniform, I felt it was my responsibility to regulate the traffic," Ramulamma told TOI. Many have lauded her spontaneous act of service. "She is one of our highly dedicated personnel. Her actions reflect her unwavering dedication to public service. It is not just about wearing a uniform; it's about the spirit of service that she embodies," SP (Gajapati), Jatindra Kumar Panda, said. The video, which has been shared on various social media platforms, has garnered thousands of views and comments, with users applauding her initiative and calling her an inspiration. "In a world where many are quick to turn a blind eye, Ramulamma's actions remind us of the impact one person can have," a user wrote on X. Ramulamma, who draws a monthly salary of Rs 18,360, has been in service since 2005. "I struggled a lot in my life after being deserted by my husband. I never shirked my responsibilities, be it in my profession or my family. That day also (Sunday), the situation in the daily market required my service and I discharged my duty happily," said Ramulamma, whose 25-year-old daughter got married recently.
