Activists to campaign for saving waterbodies
They also urged the govt to improve its efforts on water conservation.
Addressing reporters in Trichy on Monday, activists highlighted that among the 18,000 micro watersheds in the state, 6,000 are classified as irrecoverable. "The govt and the district administrations should take efforts to recover at least the remaining 12,000 watersheds under schemes such as MGNREGA to enable them to conserve water up to their full capacity.
The authorities must also create new waterbodies to store 200tmcft of water every year," said D Gurusamy, an advocate and the coordinator of the outfit.
The movement announced that it will start the statewide campaign from Trichy on Sept 29. Members would meet the collectors in each district to put forward their demands. We would also consider legal courses of action if ours demands are not met, they said.
The representatives regretted that a majority of the surplus water released at 1 lakh cusecs from the Mettur dam recently was directed to the sea without any utility. They claimed that around 20% of waterbodies have disappeared since independence due to various reasons and sought safeguarding of the existing waterbodies by restoring them to their full capacity.

Flyover height poses hurdle for Ganesh Chaturthi processions
Hubballi: With the Ganesh Chaturthi nearing, the 20-feet tall flyover between Channamma Circle and Indira Glass House is emerging as a hurdle. Idols like Hubballi Ka Raja stand 23 feet tall, needing 26 feet clearance, once loaded on vehicles. We feel the Old Bus Stand road is a good route for the procession. However, we will discuss with the concerned Ganesh Mandals and make a decision," he explained. Sanjay Meharwade, president, Hubballi Ka Raja Shree Gajanan Utsav Samiti, said that this time they have ordered a 23-feet idol in Bengaluru. "Our trolley will be 2.6 or 3 feet in height. Hence, we need a height space of about 26 feet. If we demand the Girani Chawl, RNS Kalyan Mantap route, again we will have to pass under the same flyover from IT Park to Hosur Circle. So we are confused about whether we should take the procession on Neeligin Road and Bharat Mill Road," he expressed. Raveesh CR, DCP crime and traffic, said that no request has been received from Ganesha festival organisers in this regard. "If we get such a request or information from festival organisers, we will check the space and take action," he assured. MLA Mahesh Tenginakai confirmed that the height of the flyover from the ground to the beam of the upper road is 20 feet. "Major idols like Hubballi Ka Raja need a minimum height space of 26 feet. We feel the trolleys can move by the side of the flyover. However, we will have to check the width of the trolleys and the available space alongside the flyover. Bhubaneswar: For most professionals, their duties and responsibilities conclude with the end of their shift. However, for home guard Gubbala Ramulamma, 47, duty is not bound by time, place or attire. Dressed in a sari and carrying a shopping bag at a local market in Paralakhemundi in Gajapati district on Sunday, she encountered a traffic jam. Without hesitation, she sprang into action, managing the traffic while still holding her bag of vegetables. The act was captured on video by a passerby and has since gone viral on social media, earning her widespread admiration for her commitment to duty beyond her working hours.
