The University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) has been honoured with the prestigious Google Cloud Research Excellence Award in Cloud and Infra AI at the Google Cloud Summit held in Doha.
The award was presented by HE Mohammed bin Ali bin Mohammed Al Mannai, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, to Dr Salem Al-Naemi, president of UDST, and was received on his behalf by Dr Rachid Benlamri, vice president, Academic Affairs.
This accolade recognises UDST's outstanding contributions to applied research, leveraging the power of AI and advanced cloud infrastructure solutions provided by Google Cloud. The award specifically celebrates the innovative research conducted through UDST's G-Lab, a pioneering facility supported by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, focusing on big data analytics, bioinformatics, engineering, and high-performance cloud computing.
Commenting on the award, Dr Salem Al-Naemi stated: 'This recognition is a testament to the University's continuous commitment to research excellence and technological innovation. We are proud to see our efforts in AI and cloud computing acknowledged. As Qatar's national applied university, we continue to drive forward-thinking research aligned with the country's Third National Development Strategy.'
UDST is also dedicated to applying the agile and sustainable solutions offered by Google Cloud to equip students with future-proof skills and hands-on cloud experience. These include Google Compute and Storage for advanced simulations and modeling, BigQuery and Google AI to enable researchers to analyze vast datasets and accelerate breakthrough discoveries.
The award was received during a special ceremony at the summit, attended by distinguished officials, experts and researchers, further enhancing UDST's academic standing and reaffirming its leadership in utilising advanced technologies to drive scientific research and support sustainable development.

Environment ministry launches Qatar Biodiversity Database
DOHA: The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has launched the National Biodiversity Database of the State of Qatar through an interactive electronic platform to document and classify terrestrial and marine organisms. The launch coincides with World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5. The platform aims to create accurate maps of natural habitats and the spatial and temporal distribution of species, providing a reliable scientific reference that supports decision-makers, researchers, and relevant authorities in preparing national reports and formulating environmental policies based on precise and sustainable scientific data. In this context, Minister of Environment and Climate Change HE Dr Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie affirmed that the launch of the database is a strategic milestone in Qatar's environmental path and reflects the country's commitment to environmental governance and sustainable development. He pointed out that having a comprehensive and reliable national database is a strategic necessity and a key tool for monitoring environmental changes, policy formulation, and decision-making. It also plays a role in enhancing Qatar's standing in international environmental indices by providing accurate data to global organizations, he added. The Minister explained that the database aligns with the aspirations of Qatar National Vision 2030 and translates the directions of the Third National Development Strategy 2024-2030 toward green transformation and enhanced environmental security, particularly in addressing the challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss. The launch ceremony witnessed the signing of a 'Principal User Document'with several governmental and academic entities, including the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, the Environmental Science Center at Qatar University, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, University of Doha for Science and Technology, Qatar National Library, and the Friends of the Environment Center. This step aims to promote effective institutional use of environmental data. For his part, Undersecretary of the Ministry HE Eng Abdulaziz bin Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid Al Mahmoud said that the new platform is an advanced model in environmental knowledge management, enabling accurate assessment of biodiversity, with a focus on both threatened and non-threatened species and environmentally sensitive sites, through scientifically supported descriptions with maps and illustrative images. He also noted that, as a party to international biodiversity agreements, Qatar regularly conducts comprehensive environmental surveys, and the new platform will enhance the quality of these reports and facilitate environmental reporting. Meanwhile, Assistant Undersecretary for Natural Reserves Affairs at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Dr Ibrahim Abdul Latif Al Muslimani emphasized that the database marks a qualitative leap in unifying environmental data and supporting the sustainable use of biological resources, while also encouraging community and expert engagement in environmental conservation efforts. Director of the Wildlife Development Department at the Ministry Youssef Ibrahim Al Hamar said that the database serves as a comprehensive reference that enables users to conduct seamless searches and access accurate data. He noted that the Ministry organized training courses for the technical team to ensure the platform's operational readiness.

Visual content, including human avatars, was produced using Google Cloud's VEO 2 video generation technology, showcasing the potential of generative AI in immersive storytelling. Each episode offered a preview of the day's agenda and a recap of highlights from the previous day's sessions, condensing tens of hours of content involving hundreds of speakers and insights from thousands of participants. This innovative activation presents a new model for engaging with major conferences and events, ensuring that valuable insights remain accessible—regardless of whether one is physically present.

QBA, CMU-Q sign MoU to boost education, research
Satyendra Pathak Doha In a major step toward fostering a knowledge-driven economy and advancing Qatar's National Vision 2030, the Qatari Businessmen Association (QBA) and Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) have signed a significant memorandum of understanding (MoU) that will deepen cooperation in the fields of education, scientific research, entrepreneurship, and community development. Held in Doha, the press briefing accompanying the signing ceremony emphasised the broad and strategic nature of the agreement, which aims to link academic excellence with real-world economic impact through initiatives in training, internships, public policy research, business innovation, SME support, and digital transformation. Addressing the media, QBA Chairman Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim Al Thani reiterated QBA's unwavering commitment to supporting the nation's talent pipeline and fostering collaboration between the business and academic sectors. Sheikh Faisal said, 'Through this partnership with Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, we aim to strengthen research and innovation in alignment with the Third National Development Strategy 2024–2030. This collaboration will serve to enhance the private sector's productivity and competitiveness by integrating research-based solutions.' He also stressed the role of educational institutions in nurturing globally competitive talent, adding that strategic partnerships like this are instrumental in bridging the gap between academic theory and economic practice. 'This MoU helps us move beyond dialogue to action. It's about creating pathways for students to engage with our member companies and for our companies to benefit from the latest research and thinking coming out of CMU-Q,' Sheikh Faisal said. Dean of CMU-Q Michael Trick underscored the multifaceted goals of the MoU, highlighting its emphasis on entrepreneurship, technological innovation, and the importance of building direct industry-academic bridges. 'We are planning to focus significantly on entrepreneurship, especially as Qatar becomes more welcoming to startups. The Qatari Businessmen Association's support is essential to making these companies more visible and viable,' Trick said. He noted that while CMU-Q is best known for its programmes in business, information systems, and computer science, it is the synergy between technology and entrepreneurship that will drive Qatar's private sector forward. 'It's not just the business programme. The entrepreneurial aspects of our Information Systems and Computer Science programmes are very strong,' he added. 'This is where the QBA can have a broader impact—not just on our business students, but across disciplines.' The collaboration will also focus on supporting Qatar's small and medium enterprises (SMEs), aligning with national goals to digitise the economy and increase the competitiveness of the local business ecosystem. 'Our Information Systems programme is well positioned to work with organisations at all levels, particularly SMEs,' Trick stated. 'The potential for impact here is enormous.' The agreement outlines internships, guest lectures, and student mentoring as key components, but Trick emphasised that the relationship with QBA goes beyond just job placements. 'We don't need an MoU just for internships,' he noted. 'What we seek is a broader engagement—one where QBA members interact with our students, mentor them, and importantly, hire them. This is how we ensure our graduates have a direct impact on Qatar's economy.' When asked about graduate retention, Trick proudly shared that 93 percent of CMU-Q students who enter the job market stay in Qatar for their first job—a strong testament to the university's alignment with national development goals. According to statements shared during the press briefing, the MoU also envisions collaboration on publishing joint economic reports, organising business development workshops, and holding industry-specific conferences that will elevate private-sector awareness and driveinnovation. A representative from QBA noted that this academic-business collaboration 'will not only raise awareness among business leaders but will also promote strategic thinking and innovation, hand-in-hand with academia.' CMU-Q's student body is composed of both local and international students, many of whom choose to remain and contribute to Qatar's economy after graduation. 'Roughly 20 percent of our students come from outside the country, but thanks to the Qatar Foundation's support and the welcoming environment, many choose to stay,' Trick said. 'We're proud to say that we are not just educating Qatar's youth—we are attracting the world's best and integrating them into the future of this country.'
