
UDST receives Google Cloud Research Excellence Award for Cloud & infra AI

The University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) has been honoured with the prestigious Google Cloud Research Excellence Award in Cloud and Infra AI at the Google Cloud Summit held in Doha.
The award was presented by HE Mohammed bin Ali bin Mohammed Al Mannai, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, to Dr Salem Al-Naemi, president of UDST, and was received on his behalf by Dr Rachid Benlamri, vice president, Academic Affairs.
This accolade recognises UDST's outstanding contributions to applied research, leveraging the power of AI and advanced cloud infrastructure solutions provided by Google Cloud. The award specifically celebrates the innovative research conducted through UDST's G-Lab, a pioneering facility supported by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, focusing on big data analytics, bioinformatics, engineering, and high-performance cloud computing.
Commenting on the award, Dr Salem Al-Naemi stated: 'This recognition is a testament to the University's continuous commitment to research excellence and technological innovation. We are proud to see our efforts in AI and cloud computing acknowledged. As Qatar's national applied university, we continue to drive forward-thinking research aligned with the country's Third National Development Strategy.'
UDST is also dedicated to applying the agile and sustainable solutions offered by Google Cloud to equip students with future-proof skills and hands-on cloud experience. These include Google Compute and Storage for advanced simulations and modeling, BigQuery and Google AI to enable researchers to analyze vast datasets and accelerate breakthrough discoveries.
The award was received during a special ceremony at the summit, attended by distinguished officials, experts and researchers, further enhancing UDST's academic standing and reaffirming its leadership in utilising advanced technologies to drive scientific research and support sustainable development.

Sidra Medicine contributes to breakthrough tool for early detection of Type 1 diabetes
Tribune News Network Doha Sidra Medicine, a member of Qatar Foundation, has helped develop an artificial intelligence (AI) powered tool that predicts the risk of developing Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), enabling earlier diagnosis and more targeted care. The tool uses microRNA signals in the blood to detect early biological changes linked to the disease. Published in Nature Medicine, the study titled 'A microRNA-based dynamic risk score for type 1 diabetes' introduces a dynamic risk score based on microRNAs, which are tiny molecules in the blood that reflect changes in the body, including early stress in insulin-producing Beta cells. By analysing data from over 2,800 participants, the researchers found that these molecular signals could identify individuals at high risk of developing T1D long before symptoms appear. Dr. Ammira Akil, principal investigator at Sidra Medicine and director of the Metabolic and Mendelian Disorders Translational Programme, who designed the study, said: 'This study marks a significant advancement in the way we understand and manage autoimmune diseases like Type 1 Diabetes. By combining microRNA profiling with artificial intelligence, we have developed a predictive risk score that can help identify individuals at highest risk, optimise treatment decisions and determine when to intervene. It is a powerful example of how AI and Machine Learning are transforming precision medicine into real-world clinical impact.' Sidra Medicine's contribution to the study was led by the Mendelian and Metabolic Translational Research Programme under the Precision Genomics and Translational Omics Lab. The team played a keyrole in the early laboratory work on primary human insulin-producing cells and conducted critical analyses that helped with the development and validation of the clinical risk score. The study findings complement ongoing efforts at Sidra Medicine, including the DANNA1 cohort, a local foundational population-based registry of individuals with T1D in Qatar that underpin the upcoming national screening programme for early detection and prevention of Type 1 Diabetes. Prof. Khalid Fakhro, chief research officer and chair of the Precision Medicine Programme at Sidra Medicine, said: 'The study findings demonstrate that the microRNA-based dynamic risk score can accurately differentiate between individuals with and without Type 1 Diabetes. It also predicts who may become insulin dependent after an islet cell transplant and identifies patients likely to respond to specific therapies - insights that current clinical markers cannot provide. 'Importantly, this assessment is achievable through a simple, minimally invasive blood test, making it highly promising for routine clinical use. The study also reflects our ongoing commitment to advancing the use of artificial intelligence as a powerful tool to drive earlier diagnosis, more precise treatments, and safer outcomes for patients.' The next phase of the research will focus on validating the findings across broader and more diverse populations and assessing the integration of the dynamic risk score into clinical trials and early intervention strategies. Sidra Medicine will continue to support these efforts through its research programmes and ongoing collaborations. The groundbreaking study was made possible through a multinational collaboration involving experts from Sidra Medicine, Breakthrough T1D, the University of Western Sydney, and the PREDICT T1D Study Group.

Minister highlights innovation, IP strategy at WIPO dialogue
Tribune News Network Doha Minister of State for Foreign Trade Affairs HE Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Sayed represented Qatar at the high-level ministerial policy dialogue convened by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, Switzerland. Held under the theme 'Shaping the Future of Innovation,' the event brought together ministers of trade and economy, heads of international organisations, and leading global experts to deliberate on the evolving landscape of innovation and intellectual property (IP). In his address, Al Sayed emphasised the crucial role of international cooperation in fostering a resilient, knowledge-based global economy, particularly in light of growing global transformations. He highlighted the importance of policy dialogues like the WIPO gathering, noting their value in exchanging strategic insights on the future of innovation and economic competitiveness. The minister of state reaffirmed Qatar's commitment to positioning innovation at the core of its national development agenda, in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third National Development Strategy (2024–2030). These frameworks aim to transform Qatar into a global hub for innovation, investment, and sustainable growth. He outlined the ministry's ambitious strategies launched in January 2025, aimed at boosting productivity and sectoral competitiveness. These strategies prioritise key economic sectors, support robust public–private partnerships, and foster an enabling environment for startups and entrepreneurs. Al Sayed also pointed to Qatar's world-class innovation infrastructure, notably the Qatar Science and Technology Park, as a catalyst for research, development, and investment. He noted the country's comprehensive incentive packages for strategic sectors, designed to attract both local and foreign investors. Highlighting Qatar's efforts to modernise its intellectual property framework, he underscored the value of strategic collaboration with WIPO. He cited the June 2023 memorandum of understanding signed between Qatar and WIPO to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in integrating IP into their business strategies as a key milestone. Another major development was Qatar's accession to the Madrid Protocol for the international registration of trademarks in May 2024, which came into effect on August 3, 2024. This step has significantly simplified procedures for trademark registration, thereby enhancing the investment climate and improving legal certainty for international businesses operating in Qatar. On the sidelines of the WIPO dialogue, Al Sayed held a bilateral meeting with WIPO Director General Daren Tang. The two officials discussed avenues for deepening cooperation between Qatar and WIPO, particularly in the areas of dispute resolution, intellectual property protection, and capacity building. A key highlight of their discussion was Qatar's upcoming hosting of a high-level conference in collaboration with WIPO, titled 'The Role of Alternative Dispute Resolution Mechanisms and the Protection of Intellectual Property and Innovation in Attracting Foreign Direct Investment for Sustainable Development – Qatar National Vision 2030 and Beyond.' The conference is expected to serve as a platform for legal experts, investors, and policy makers to explore the intersection of IP protection and foreign direct investment within a framework of sustainable development. Concluding his remarks at the WIPO dialogue, Al Sayed reiterated Qatar's firm commitment to establishing an integrated system that safeguards intellectual property rights, promotes innovation, and supports economic diversification. He affirmed that protecting IP is essential not only for fostering innovation but also for securing long-term economic growth and international investor confidence.
