Mum's stunning transformation as she loses half her bodyweight without fat jabs
A mum lost half her bodyweight when her 20-stone frame "almost killed" her.
Kim Mattinson, 43, was determined to tackle her weight as, at her heaviest, she lived with the "daily threat of heart failure". Yet, the the mother of four chose against using fat jabs - and instead overhauled her diet - to become healthier and see a brighter future.
Things looked bleak for Kim in April 2022 when she experienced the symptoms of a heart attack, including a severe pain in her chest, and she was rushed to hospital. Doctors diagnosed her with fatty liver and acute asthma, a moment Kim now regards as "a wake-up call". Kim's story mirrors that of Josh Hilton, a hairdresser from Wiltshire, who lost 10 stone in one year without going to the gym or taking fat jabs.
And, like Josh, Kim sees jabs - like those by Ozempic and Mounjaro - as "quick fixes". Some of these brands, such as Ozempic, are also not designed to be used as weight loss treatments. Kim said: "I see weight loss jabs as a quick fix, I wanted a lasting change. I love food and I didn't want to have a toxic relationship with it, so I stayed away."
The single mum, of Cockermouth, Cumbria, was only 40 when she experienced the "fake" heart attack episode at home. Recalling this, she said: "The day I had the fake heart attack I thought I was going to die. The feeling of thinking these are your last moments was horrific.
"All I could see was my kids and how I wasn't going to be there for them. Now if anything looking back I'm happy it happened as it forced me to get a move on and change my life."
So, Kim joined her local Slimming World group, began exercising, beginning with walking 10,000 steps before starting at her local gym and changed her diet. In the three years since April 2022 when she weighed 20 stone, Kim lost some 10 stone.
Speaking today, the holiday cottage management business owner said: "I no longer have to make excuses to do anything, it is yes to everything. My life has done a complete 180 - now we can do whatever we want a family be it swimming, cycling, walking.
"I no longer have to go online to check for weight restrictions. It is also the small things of I remember the first time I could see my feet again or I can now have a bath instead of a shower.
"Losing weight saved my life. It gave me back everything I thought I'd lost and so much more. I couldn't afford not to be here for my kids - they needed me, and I needed to be around fully present for them."
Kim compared the difficulties of parenting at her heaviest to now and in recent years as her weight has started to drop. She said: "I had to make excuses for why I couldn't be there for my own children. I has terribly sore feet and I couldn't walk for more than 100 metres meaning as a family we were missing out on a lot of things as I just couldn't physically do it."
But now the Cumbria mum and her kids, whose ages now range from 11 to 21, enjoy a variety of sports and activities together, including swimming and hiking.

The UK cost of weight loss drug Mounjaro will increase by up to 170%, its US manufacturer has said, as the White House pushes for a price hike abroad so costs can be cut for Americans. The new price, announced by manufacturer Eli Lilly on Thursday, also applies to Lilly's type 2 diabetes medicine that has the same name. The price for a month's supply of the highest dose of the medicine will increase from £122 to £330, Lilly said, adding the adjustment will be made next month. The higher price will not affect those prescribed the medicine through the NHS, which has a separate deal, a Lilly spokesperson said. The US drugmaker said that when it launched Mounjaro in the UK it agreed to a list price "significantly below" that in its three other European markets to prevent delays in availability through the NHS. "We are now aligning the list price more consistently," Lilly said. Lilly did not say what price it has agreed with the NHS, but said it was working with private UK healthcare providers who can set their own prices, such as online pharmacies, to ensure the medicines remain available. It follows Sky News earlier this month revealing only eight of 42 NHS Integrated Care Boards in England were providing the weight loss treatment to patients, and many of the rest were unable to guarantee when it would be available. 2:32 Lilly's decision comes as US President Donald Trump is pushing for lower domestic prices while encouraging price hikes overseas. The US pays more for prescription drugs than any other country, often nearly three times as much as other developed nations. Mr Trump says he wants to narrow this gap to stop Americans from being "ripped off". The company issued a statement online saying: "Lilly supports the administration's goal of keeping the United States the world's leading destination for biopharmaceutical research and manufacturing, and the objective of more fairly sharing the costs of breakthrough medical research across developed countries. "This rebalancing may be difficult, but it means the prices for medicines paid by governments and health systems need to increase in other developed markets like Europe in order to make them lower in the US."

The price of the weight loss jab Mounjaro will rise by up to 170% in the UK, its US manufacturer has said, as Donald Trump ramps up pressure on drugmakers to increase their prices for Europeans so that they can make them more affordable for Americans. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide and is self-administered in once-a-week injections. Denmark's Novo Nordisk has become one of the most prominent names in the field, launching Wegovy in the UK in September 2023, turning it into one of the most valuable companies in Europe. While the jabs have increased profits at big pharmaceutical companies, they are racing to develop an equivalent pill, which would be a more convenient and cheaper alternative for patients and healthcare authorities. Eli Lilly said this month that a pill in early trial stages showed that participants on their highest dose lost an average of 12.4% of their body weight, compared with 0.9% of the control group. Novo Nordisk has submitted its oral weight loss drug for approval in the US. Its trial results showed that participants could lose about 15% of their body weight.

US-based Eli Lilly says a 5mg dose will nearly double from £92 to £180 from September 1, while a 15mg pen will rise from £122 to £330. But despite their growing popularity and increasing availability now through the NHS, most patients don't realise the strict temperature guidelines that must be followed to keep these drugs effective. 'We speak to patients every day who are using GLP-1s for the first time,' says Danielle. 'With temperatures set to soar again this summer, it's crucial we raise awareness about safe medication storage. Heat damage isn't always obvious, but it can have a huge impact on effectiveness and safety."
