Ranking iconic gaming characters by their chances of winning Le Mans
It's that time of year again. As the WEC's finest machinery assembles at the Circuit de la Sarthe and laps the famous layout at speeds that shrink its 8.4 miles down to karting track proportions, it's hard not to feel – well, a bit left out. Deep down, we all suspect ourselves capable of driving to a stunning Le Mans victory, and what's especially appealing about that shower thought is the certainty that it'll never be disproven. What's even harder to disprove, though, is the utterly abstract concept of strapping in a gaming icon and assessing their chances of taking the win, based on, er… Advertisement - Page continues below
No no no, absolutely not. While at first glance he might seem ideally positioned to translate his credentials as 'notoriously fast eulipotyphla' to on-track performances, the fact is that Le Mans Prototypes are designed to be driven while seated, and maintaining this position for extended stints would cause unbearable agony for Sonic given that his back is made of needles. This would also create a hazard for his co-drivers when swapping seats, and safety must take priority. We know Sonic has a passionate and fiercely protective community, but we simply can't look past this fundamental incompatibility. Sonic ranks last. You might like
If we're talking about stamina, a game character who's been around since 1980 deserves at least a passing mention. Most protagonists would be thoroughly sick of chasing after little white spots and being chased by ghosts by now, but given that Pac-Man finds a way to re-release himself as a new 'remastered collection' almost hourly, that's clearly not the case here. However, the cold, hard truth of the matter is that no one's sure what Pac-Man actually is, and that makes it impossible to imagine the logistics of even getting him into a Le Mans prototype and ensuring he can reach the wheel and pedals, let alone racing to a decent competitive standard. We're talking about a sentient yellow circle here. Stop being silly. Advertisement - Page continues below
Lara Croft - Tomb Raider series It's bad news for fans of shooting monkeys and figure-hugging expedition attire: we don't fancy Lara's chances as a WEC competitor either. Although her later instalments handle much more compliantly, for most of her life Lara Croft has had the turning circle of a wardrobe and guiding her along even simple corridors felt like performing keyhole surgery with a PlayStation 1 pad. And did you ever get her to drive the boat in that Venice level from Tomb Raider 2 ? Yeah, good luck round the Dunlop chicane with those deft inputs.
Kratos - God of War series Gaming's own Dan Ticktum has undeniable physical prowess, and could probably shoulder press a Ferrari 499P and run it around the track above his shoulders as quickly as he could drive it. However, we're talking about a character famed for going to extreme and ruthless ends to enact vengeance on all who slight him. A guy who rips the key off a ship captain's neck and kicks him into the jaws of a hydra, and then double-kills the captain's soul again in a subsequent game. At no point did the captain even shoot Kratos a hard glance. It's just hard to see how he's going to get around turn one without a race-ending incident, much less stay on the good side of the stewards for an entire 24 hours.
Nathan Drake - Uncharted series 'Hoo boy! This thing's fast!' Understood Nathan. Positive deltas this phase please. 'They should call this place the Circuit de la awesome sauce!' Copy that. 'Who left that chicane there?!' Haha. Do try to concentrate please, Nathan.
Link - Legend of Zelda series Link lies somewhere in the middle of this empirical hierarchy, not because his pace is likely to be mid-pack but because he's so difficult to assess. On one hand, he demonstrates both instinctive driving skills and a sound understanding of automotive engineering in Tears of the Kingdom which would surely come to the fore over the full span of the iconic endurance race. He's also an able competitor during his unlikely cameo in Mario Kart 8 . On the other hand, he also has a proclivity for going off and doing his own thing for many hours, regardless of how world-endingly pressing the task he's been entrusted with may be. Ganon is literally planning to dominate the entire kingdom, Link . Is now really the time to refine your vegetable kebab recipe? That, along with his tight-lipped comms approach, means we simply can't trust him to stay on task and keep plugging away with competitive lap times for a full stint. A real shame. Ellie Williams - The Last Of Us Another tricky character to pin down. In the pros column, as a young child she survived countless combat encounters with survivalists, furious mushrooms and falling buildings and remained impressively unphased throughout. A multi-car pile-up would barely raise her heart rate, after the things she's seen. Her guitar playing would also provide a soothing garage atmosphere, so there's that. In the cons: she has a small sliver of that Kratos -like lust for vengeance which may cause some steward-troubling overtakes or over-zealous, Fernando Alonso-style overtakes which redefine track limits.
Master Chief - Halo series Speaking of the great Alonso, there's a striking quote of his during a particular podcast appearance in which he describes his approach to racing as 'executing as a robot'. And who exemplifies that approach better in gaming than cyborg raconteur and Warthog terroriser, Master Chief? Master Chief is not a robot. His precise anatomy under that familiar green armour is unclear, but it's not quite human. Neither is his reaction to stressful and traumatic events, in which he finds himself roughly every 40 seconds. He simply thinks of a cool deadpan line, vocalises it with all the inflection of a tranquilised Jack Dee, and continues along his way. We feel sure this will yield results over the course of a full day and night of racing. As such, we're willing to look past the millions of times Master Chief has written off a Warthog Jeep. Princess Peach - Mario Kart series Definitely not Mario . Too obvious. Too cheerful. No, instead it's someone from the Mario Kart roster who often flies under the radar. Who makes you think twice before firing that red shell, because it would seem a bit unkind. It's Princess Peach . With those cutesy voice lines, her approach to racing seems so earnest, it's impossible not to feel a pang of guilt for launching her into orbit with an item. And yet how quickly we forget when it's Peach herself behind the blue shell that orchestrates our downfall within sight of the finish line. Like Alex Albon, she's an agent of chaos masquerading as pleasantness personified, able to pick her way through a wreckage of her own making without putting a target on her exhaust. That's a skill that will serve her well around the Circuit Bugatti.
Solid Snake/Big Boss - Metal Gear Solid series
Mystic supersoldier and LMP-spec hypercar isn't a logical match. But the more we think about it, the more we're convinced that Metal Gear Solid 's various and confusingly similar protagonists could absolutely win at Le Mans.
For starters, few game protagonists display levels of patience or stamina akin to Big Boss's. Anybody who can prevail in that legendary sniper battle against The End in MGS3 surely stands a decent chance over a 24-hour endurance race, and that's before we even factor in all those times we made Big Boss drive a Jeep at full speed through the desert while ducking down into the footwell.
He's also perfectly happy to subsist on unspecified 'rations' over the course of his deployments, which is a real mark of the man's stamina, and his aptitude for radio communication simply can't be called into question.
If there's any small blotch – and it's barely a smudge, really – on his otherwise gleaming application, it would be the likelihood that upon winning he'd force us to watch four and a half hours of cutscenes revealing that Alpine was actually FOXHOUND, all the pit mechanics had been replaced by AI and that the whole event was a giant conspiracy in which both a ghost and a giant nuclear mech were somehow involved. Love Island star Jess looks completely different as she shows off new look a year after show
LOVE Island star Jess White looked unrecognisable as she showed off her transformation a year on from her villa stint. The reality star, 26, shared holiday snaps of her in Ibiza wearing a white bikini and matching sarong skirt. 8 8 8 8 Jess showcased her toned figure in the two-piece while at pool club Clap House. Ditching her darker tresses, Jess also revealed her lighter brown locks and her sculpted face She posed for a series of sunkissed snaps accessorising her look with round rim sunglasses, straw sun hat and a sheer beach dress. Jess captioned the post: "Summer has been good to me." Her former Love Island pals were quick to compliment Jess of her new look, with Olivia Hawkins writing: "Wow," with a heart eyes emoji. The brunette told how she feels "sick all the time" in a candid video taken from her bed. She said: "So this is a genuine question, is it just me or is it normal to feel sick ever day? "I actually swear 'I feel sick' probably comes out of my mouth once a day. Love Island feud reignited as OG villa girl takes a savage swipe at rival "And I will feel fine and then I just get that wave of I feel sick for hours, and that's it. "Then it will just clear. I am never ever sick but I just feel sick all the time, it's bizarre. "To the point that now if I don't feel sick I'm like, why don't I feel sick?" The TV star then told how she had put a pizza in the oven, but felt too unwell to eat it. She finished her clip by asking fans: "What does that mean?" Her fans were quick to offer a variety of suggestions for the sickness, including anxiety and contraception, yet the underlying advice was to see her doctor and get blood tests. LOVE ISLAND JOURNEY Jess was in last summer's original Love Island line-up, yet was dramatically dumped from the ITV2 show in a mass cull ahead of the final. She was embroiled in a love triangle with Harriett Blackmore over Ronnie Vint during much of the series and they came to blows on several occasions. She also delivered plenty of camera-worthy moments on the ITV2 reality series and coined the phrase "I'm the prize!" during a row with Harriett. Jess was repeatedly branded a "bully" by Love Island fans. But the former retail manager insisted she has been a pal to ALL of her fellow islanders. Following her exit, Jess - who hails from Stockport - claimed she will be "friends for life" with her co-stars. Recently, she looked unrecognisable following a glam makeover. At the time, Jess was tipped for a spot on the spin-off All Stars series - yet never ended up featuring. Though her ex Ronnie did - and Jess then revealed the truth about claims he "kisses like a washing machine". In the All Stars spin off, Ronnie was labelled a bad kisser after Elma Pazar blasted his kiss for having a bit too much tongue action at high speed. Reacting to Ronnie's mistake by comparing her own experience, Jess said: 'I mean I can't speak for all his conquests…but he wasn't as bad as a washing machine! "Definitely not the best kiss I've had though." Jess added: "I'd rate Ronnie's kissing as a 6/10…but maybe I need to jog my memory?' Jess, who failed to find lasting love on the show, has previously admitted: "I think I'm single because I don't underestimate the fact that I'm hard work. "I know what I want and I'm not easily pleased. When you're a loud, outgoing woman, sometimes it can intimidate men…" 8 8 8 8

Meghan is accused of being a copy-Kate again: Duchess opts for same jumper once worn by Princess as she debuts her VERY expensive wardrobe for season two of Netflix series
Meghan Markle has been spotted wearing a very familiar jumper in the new trailer for the second series of her Netflix lifestyle show With Love, Meghan - one that the Princess of Wales wore first. The Duchess of Sussex, 44, wears a burgundy version of a soft ribbed jumper by French It-girl label Sézane that Kate Middleton donned in cream in 2023. Eagle-eyed royal fans spotted the details of the crew neck jumper, which features a raglan shoulder and five buttons in a row from the wrist to the forearm, and compared it to the knitted co-ord Kate wore during her visit to Nottingham Trent University two years ago. At the time, the Princess, 43, was a picture of elegance as she wore the cotton and merino Sami jumper with its matching Naelle midi skirt in an affordable outfit that cost £245 for the set. She styled the co-ord with pearl earrings from Simone Rocha and suede pumps by Gianvito Rossi. Meghan's burgundy version is over £40 more expensive than Kate's natural-hued jumper at £155, and is sold out in nearly all sizes on the Sézane website. But the relaxed knit is one of Meghan's more reasonably priced garments that she wears in the series, with the rest of her wardrobe and accessories amounting to thousands of pounds. The second series of With Love, Meghan will see the Duchess wearing a dainty floral print midi dress with a belt by Carolina Herrera, priced at US$2,490 (approximately £1,838). In another episode, she wears a second Carolina Herrera dress, this time a striped shirtdress priced at nearly £600. Meghan also wears a striped A-line midi dress with thing straps by Veronica Beard, which is surprisingly affordable for £214 - but her chosen jewellery brings the outfit price up to well over £9,000. She styles the navy blue and white striped dress with a diamond and gold necklace and pendant by Jessica McCormack, priced at an eyewatering £8,800. In the first series of With Love, Meghan, the former royal also showcased her obsession with designer clothes and sparkling accessories, but she also threw some high street fashion into the mix. For example, she wore a cashmere jumper by Jenni Kane, US$395 (£291) draped over a knitted T-shirt by Loro Piana, US$1,325 (£978) and paired the outfit with linen-blend pleated trousers by Zara. However, another episode saw her dripping in designer, from her Zimmerman button-up shirt and shorts co-ord, US$1,070 (£790) to her Saint Laurent leather sandals, US$730 (£538), alongside Natalie Marie earrings, a Logan Hollowell necklace and an Ariel Gordon tennis bracelet valued at over US$10,700 (£7,900). Prince Harry's wife has always been a fan of designer threads, frequently stepping out in Aquazurra stilettos, of which she reportedly owns 26 pairs, and big name labels like Ralph Lauren, Oscar de la Renta, Stella McCartney and Gabriela Hearst. Her favourite Aquazurra heels start at around £500 and can go up to more than £1,100. Meghan also showed off her designer wardrobe in the second series of her Netflix show, wearing dresses by Carolina Herrera The former royal has always been a fan of designer labels and wore brands like Zimmerman and Saint Laurent in the first series of her show While promoting her lifestyle brand As Ever, Meghan has also been known to bring designer labels into her visuals. She recently shared a clip to promote the second drop of her As Ever Napa Valley rosé on the eve of her 44th birthday, which showed her frolicking in the sun with a wicker basket filled with flowers and bottles of wine. While her face did not feature in the video, she showed off her signature stack of rings on her left ring finger, including her engagement ring, wedding ring and an infinity ring, estimated to be worth around £210,000. She also wore a gold Cartier Love Bracelet, which costs up to £7,050, and a gold Cartier Tank Watch that once belonged to Princess Diana, both of which she regularly wears. The clip later showed a view of Meghan's swinging feet as she sits atop a stone garden wall, clad in £720 tan-coloured Hermes Santorini sandals. The Duchess is used to wearing valuable clothes that cost tens of thousands of pounds, particularly when she was still a working royal before she and Harry stepped down in 2020. To announce her engagement to the Duke of Sussex, Meghan wore a Ralph & Russo haute couture dress that reportedly cost US$75,000 (£55,373) - but this was just the third most expensive outfit she has ever worn. The most expensive dress Meghan has ever donned was her US$265,000 (£195,652) Clare Waight Kelly for Givenchy wedding dress, which featured an off-shoulder neck line and long sleeves, with a five metre-long veil that was embroidered with flowers representing the countries of the Commonwealth. Second to that was the dress she wore for her reception, a US$157,000 (£115,915) minimalist Stella McCartney dress with a halter neck and draped skirt.

Aldi is selling a dupe of popular noughties alcoholic drink – and it ‘tastes just like Ribena'
ALDi has launched a new boozy treat that's sending shoppers straight back to the noughties. The popular supermarket has released a brand new tipple - Tangz Blackcurrant Sour Liqueur. 3 3 Hitting shelves across the UK from August 21, the liqueur is priced at £6.99 for a 70cl bottle, and packs a bold berry punch with a sweet-and-sour twist. And it's said to "taste just like Ribena" which will be great news for fans of the classic blackcurrant drink after the brand announced it was discontinuing its sparkling drinks range. Aldi's latest tipple channels those nostalgic flavours, but with an adult-friendly kick. Berry blast from the past Inspired by one of Britain's best-loved blackcurrant soft drinks, Tangz Blackcurrant brings that unmistakable Ribena -like flavour in a swanky, spirit-infused form. At just £6.99, it's a whopping 38 per cent cheaper than rival brand Sourz - which is currently being sold for £11.25 at Tesco, or £8.25 if you have a Clubcard. Drinkers are already getting creative: enjoy it neat over ice for a neat berry hit, or mix with lemonade for a fizzy summer spritz. The Sour Blackcurrant bottle joins two other Tangz flavours: Sour Apple and Sour Cherry. Both have been on Aldi shelves for a while, also priced at £6.99. Other nostalgic drinks making a comeback It's part of a nostalgic wave sweeping supermarket aisles—retro-style sips that marry childhood flavours with alcohol, giving shoppers that familiar zing with a grown-up edge. Other recent launches have tapped into the same trend. Hooper's Hooch, the iconic 90s alcopop, has returned in draught form across pubs nationwide, offering its zesty lemon hit in pint glasses for the first time in decades. What to do next if you have recalled food or products Marks & Spencer's creamy advocaat has also been a festive hit, with drinkers likening it to a 'boozy milkshake' that brings back cosy Christmas memories. Even Babycham, the sparkling perry that was once a party staple, is making a comeback in chic little bottles, still sweet, still bubbly, and still full of retro charm. It's not just booze getting the retro treatment. High-street shelves have seen the return of Panda Pops, the fizzy fruit drinks once found in school tuck shops, and limited-edition bottles of J20 Glitterberry, a sparkling grape and cherry mix popular at Christmas. NHS guidelines on drinking alcohol According to the NHS, regularly drinking more than 14 units of alcohol a week risks damaging your health. To keep health risks from alcohol to a low level if you drink most weeks: men and women are advised not to drink more than 14 units a week on a regular basis spread your drinking over 3 or more days if you regularly drink as much as 14 units a week if you want to cut down, try to have several drink-free days each week If you're pregnant or think you could become pregnant, the safest approach is not to drink alcohol at all to keep risks to your baby to a minimum. You read more on the NHS website. Ribena itself has also revived its classic glass-bottle cordial for a short run, aimed at fans who remember pouring it over ice on long summer days. Even Lilt, the tropical fizzy drink 'with the totally tropical taste' – had shoppers talking recently when Coca-Cola re-branded it under the Fanta name. 3
