'Puta Barça' Chants Cost Athletic Bilbao Club Money

Athletic Club have been fined €9,000 by the Spanish Football Federation's (RFEF) Disciplinary Committee after offensive chants were heard during their final La Liga match of the 2024/25 season against Barcelona. The fine was imposed following repeated chants of 'Puta Barça' from the home crowd at San Mamés. The RFEF said the language used was 'not simple expressions of disapproval' but 'expressions of hatred that incite violence'. ℹ️ Información del Athletic Club en relación con cánticos objeto de multa por parte del Comité de Disciplina de la RFEF. #AthleticClub 🦁 — Athletic Club (@AthleticClub) August 6, 2025 The ruling has been upheld by both the Appeals Committee and the Administrative Court of Sport (TAD). In a statement, Athletic confirmed the sanction and said they wished to 'reinforce the idea that respect is a fundamental principle of behaviour in the stands' ahead of the 2025/26 campaign. The club said it hopes to prevent future incidents that could damage its image or lead to further financial penalties. The match marked Barcelona's first visit to San Mamés since their failed attempt to sign Nico Williams in the summer of 2024, adding further tension to the fixture. The RFEF said chants of this nature 'transcend the realm of criticism or sporting rivalry' and instead constitute 'a direct incitement to violence and rejection of certain groups'. The two clubs are due to meet at least three times this season: on 22-23 November in Barcelona, on March 7-8 in Bilbao, and in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final in Saudi Arabia. Athletic's conduct in the stands is under increased scrutiny. UEFA fined the club €50,000 during their Europa League tie against Manchester United, with an additional €34,000 fine following their match against Roma. By February, general director Jon Berasategi confirmed fines totalling €110,000 for offensive chanting. Tags: AtBarcelonarfefSan Mamés

La Liga Rejects Barça Request to Review ter Stegen's Medicals Without Consent

Tensions remain high between FC Barcelona and Marc-André ter Stegen, as the goalkeeper continues to withhold consent for the release of his medical report to the La Liga Medical Commission. Barcelona believes there are certain situations where La Liga should make exceptions, especially if the situation affects the club in the long run. If ter Stegen insists on not signing, the club will not be able to register Espanyol's former goalkeeper, Joan Garcia. This could impact the team's competitiveness in the upcoming season. La Liga, however, has stated that there are no exceptions in this case. In other words, they cannot review the German goalkeeper's medical report without his approval. Barça still hopes the situation can be resolved internally. They are optimistic that the 33-year-old will eventually submit to their request. After returning from their tour in Asia, the Catalan club has a scheduled meeting with ter Stegen, hoping the matter can be resolved without legal or disciplinary action. The player and the club have been in conflict since the signing of Joan Garcia. Hansi Flick confirmed that ter Stegen will not be the starting goalkeeper for the upcoming season, in fact he'll be the third choice. The club is planning to build a new generation of young players who can compete at the top level for years to come. Despite it all, the German goalkeeper still wants to fight for his place in the team, as he has three years left in his contract. He has rejected any possibility of a transfer, especially after he has been linked with Monaco and Chelsea. Tags: Barcelonala ligaLaportaTer Stegen

Barcelona to Return to Camp Nou for Season Opener

Barcelona will host Valencia at the Spotify Camp Nou on August 18 after the club received final clearance to return to their home ground for the first time since renovation work began nearly two years ago. The decision from the Barcelona City Council follows the club's successful safety and operational tests, though access will be limited. Only the Grandstand and one end of the stadium will be open, allowing for a reduced capacity of 30,000 spectators. An earlier request to open the stadium to 60,000 fans for the match was denied. The club has now submitted a phased plan to gradually increase attendance – 30,000 for the Valencia and Getafe fixtures on September 18 and 21, rising to 45,000 for subsequent league and European matches, to reach 60,000 in later stages. The €1.5bn redevelopment project will ultimately raise Camp Nou's capacity to 105,000, making it the largest stadium in Europe. However, a key element – the installation of a new tensioned cable roof – is scheduled to begin after the 2025–26 season and will require six months without fans. This could force the team to return to the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys during part of the 2026–27 campaign. Some board members had pushed for the team to remain at Montjuïc throughout the upcoming season to avoid disruption, but President Joan Laporta dismissed the idea, insisting on an immediate return. Local reports described Laporta's push to play the opening match at Camp Nou as a matter of 'symbolic importance'. The return will also mark Hansi Flick's first official match as Barcelona manager. The club believes the reopening will provide both a morale boost for the squad and a financial lift, as matchday revenue resumes in full. Barcelona's phased return to Camp Nou will continue throughout the autumn, subject to further approvals. Construction will carry on around scheduled matches, but the club insists conditions are safe for fans. Tags: BarcelonaCamp Noula liga
