MEC Ralehoko sends off Gauteng Health staff to Comrades Marathon
GAUTENG.- Forty-five (45) #AsibeHealthyGP ambassadors are set to take health and wellness to the fore by participating in the Comrades Marathon taking place on Sunday, June 8.
The race covers 88km starting in Pietermaritzburg and finishing in Durban.
The Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko yesterday, (Thursday, June 5) bid farewell to the Gauteng Department of Health's (GDoH) Athletics Team that will be participating in 'the Ultimate Human Race' and carrying the aspirations of over 82 000 colleagues who wish them nothing but the best in their running.
'Your commitment to health and wellness is truly inspiring. By participating in this marathon, you showcase the values we uphold in our department and the broader community. Remember, every step you take is proof to your hard work and determination. Whether you cross the finish line first or last, your participation alone is a victory worth celebrating. Your courage and dedication serve as a beacon of inspiration for us all,' the MEC said.
This year's race is under the theme 'More Than A Race – Isiko Mpilo'.

Berea resident running towards a better world
THE Comrades Marathon runner Mahesh Ratanjee will be among scores of novices and social athletes who will take on the 49th Down Run of the ultra-marathon from Pietermaritzburg to Durban this weekend. 'I have been following a Comrades training plan with the help of a few coaches,' said Ratanjee, who will run the marathon for the fourth time. 'My plan is to stay calm and pass my checkpoints, absorbing all the positive energy from my dedicated seconders who will help me to get to the finish on time.' Ratanjee will run the Comrades to raise awareness and funds for the Durban NPO, Community Chest. The organisation focuses on early childhood development (ECD), children, youth and family care, and residential care for the elderly and homeless, mentally handicapped, and disabled people. Ratanjee, a member of the Durban Athletic Club, said he chose the organisation because it resonated with his own life experience and passions to make the world a better place for children. 'My wife and I lost our first child. Raising funds for this charity it allows me to help children in memory of my daughter,' said Ratanjee. When Sunday hits, Ratanjee says he will start the day off with a prayer. 'Take some time to remain still and absorb what I have trained for. Then I go out for a short and easy run just to activate my muscles. We normally run together with many other Comrades runners that we don't know. This helps me to come to terms with my Comrades journey.' As for how his Comrades journey began, Ratanjee said, 'It was my childhood dream to run Comrades because my dad and aunt were huge fans. They used to be the first two to get up early and watch the race from start to finish. This inspired me, but it took many years to build up the courage to make it to the start line. My first Comrades was the most challenging because it was the biggest race that I was attempting. I almost gave up just after halfway, but our club secretary calmed me down and motivated me not to give up. I was overjoyed when I crossed the finish line before the cut-off time and that was my biggest victory.' KZN Treasury banking on Comrades Marathon to give local tourism a boost
DURBAN - KwaZulu-Natal's Treasury Department has described Comrades Marathon as a major boost for the province's economy. Thousands have booked accommodation in Pietermaritzburg and Durban ahead of the marathon. The race will start in Pietermaritzburg and end at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. Finance MEC Francious Rodgers said the province always gets excited to host this event. 'It's obviously one of those really big events that we are proud of. It has a history in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, and it's not a South African event, it's an international event.' He said the hospitality industry will do business this weekend. 'And if you try and to get accommodation in Durban and Pietermaritzburg over the weekend, it's fully covered, booked, and that's exactly what we want.'

All systems go for Comrades Marathon
This year's Comrades Marathon promises more than just a gruelling test of endurance — participants can expect a 'buffet' along the route and a 'jol' at the finish, according to the organisers. At the final media briefing held in Durban yesterday, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) declared that it's all systems go for the iconic ultramarathon, which starts in Pietermaritzburg and ends in Durban tomorrow. The Witness reports that CMA general manager Alain Dalais assured athletes that the route is fully prepared, with water stations fully stocked to keep runners hydrated. 'There will be about 47 water stations between Pietermaritzburg and Durban. They are all well-equipped and fully stocked with everything [runners need] until they cross the finish line. 'I can offer assurance that all the water tables will be loaded with every type of hydrating liquid you can think of. 'We also brought in plenty of bananas, potatoes, snacks and different kinds of bites or eats that are needed to keep the runners going or energised until the end. So, the runners are expected to have a buffet on the route while they enjoy the race,' said Dalais. He added that the finish line will offer a party atmosphere, with innovations designed to enhance the overall experience. 'Also, at the end of the race, our new changes and innovations at the finish will be exciting and everybody will enjoy it,' he said. One of the most significant changes is a street finish, bringing the Comrades in line with other major global marathons. 'I am glad to announce that this year's Comrades Marathon finish will be on the street. We all know that it is already happening with other international marathons like the London Marathon, New York Marathon and others,' Dalais said. The event is expected to be the largest in the race's history, with CMA chairperson Mqondisi Ngcobo confirming a record-breaking 22 000 runners are set to take part. 'We have never experienced anything like this before, and that's why we spent long hours and weeks making sure that everything is in order,' Ngcobo stated. He emphasised that the latest changes were implemented with runner safety, security and enjoyment in mind. The KZN Tourism and Film Authority anticipates a significant economic boost, projecting an increase on last year's R600m economic spin-off. Hotels and other accommodation across Durban and Pietermaritzburg are expected to be fully booked. Msunduzi Municipality has undertaken extensive preparations for the start of the race, including road repairs, verge clearing and stormwater drain maintenance. 'Msunduzi Municipality has completed all route preparations and is ready to welcome thousands of athletes and spectators to Pietermaritzburg,' said municipal spokesperson Ntobeko Mkhize. Dalais confirmed a record number of international participants, with 3 063 runners from outside South Africa — 1 282 from the rest of Africa and 1 781 from overseas. An additional 3 000 international supporters are expected to accompany them. 'Many runners and their supporters — particularly the international visitors — spend extra time in the province after the race, booking game drives and safari visits to wildlife conservation areas,' Dalais added.
