‘A part of my history that goes': Jose Mourinho fights back tears in touching tribute after ex-Porto captain Jorge Costa dies at 53

Indian Express4 days ago
A teary-eyed Jose Mourinho paid a touching tribute to his Portuguese compatriot Jorge Costa, stating that 'it's a part of my history that goes', with the 53-year-old FC Porto legend's passing on Tuesday.
Costa was the cornerstone of Mourinho's inspirational charge to the Champions League triumph in 2004 with Porto. Costa hung up his boots in 2006 and returned as Porto's director of football in 2024 before his tragic passing due to a reported heart attack. 'Costa began to feel unwell throughout Tuesday morning and, after losing consciousness, was treated there by the club's doctors, who used a defibrillator until the national services Medical Emergencies (INEM) arrived to take him by ambulance to the hospital,' reported Spanish media outlet Diario AS.
However, Mourinho was pushed to tears when he addressed the media on the eve of his Turkish side Fenerbache's Champions League match against Feyenoord. Over his career, Costa played 530 games in all competitions, including 383 for Porto and 50 for Portugal's national team. He earned the nickname 'Bicho' (animal) from teammate Fernando Couto during their partnership in central defence. Under Mourinho at Porto, Costa wore the captain's armband during the UEFA Cup win in 2003 over Celtic and in the Champions League final victory over Monaco the following year.

Mourinho hailed Costa's immense leadership skill during their time together at Porto.
'It's part of my history that goes,' the 62-year-old Mourinho said.
'You have captains and you have leaders. It's not always about the armband but what you represent,' Mourinho continued. 'And Jorge was one of these guys who cleaned the garbage and let the coach do his job as a coach.
'That's perfection for a coach when his captain does this work. Of course, I'm very sad it's part of my history that goes. But let's forget football, let's focus on him, on Jorge, on his kids, who I met when they were really kids, but now are grown men.

'And I'm here now because if he could speak with me now he would tell me, come on, do your press conference. And he would say tomorrow play the game Mister, win the game and forget about me. That would be Jorge.
''So that's what I'm going to try and do, do my job today, do my job tomorrow and then cry after. But today and tomorrow I have a job to do and I know Jorge would tell me to do my job,' Mourinho added.
Costa also had brief stints at Charlton Athletic in England and Belgium's Standard Liège, while also representing Portuguese clubs Penafiel and Marítimo on loan early in his career. Costa also spent two seasons in India as head coach of Indian Super League (ISL) outfit Mumbai City FC. During his stint between 2018 and 2020, the team finished third and fifth in the competition, winning 17 out of the 39 games in which he was in charge. Costa had come to Mumbai after coaching clubs like SC Braga, Paços Ferreira, CFR Cluj, AEL Limassol and Anorthosis Famagusta, among others.

Goa seeks some inspiration from Spanish town known for its beach sports

Goa Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte said the state will promote itself as Asia's hub for 'beach and coastal sports tourism' along the lines of the Spanish municipality, Tarifa, which is one of the world's most popular destinations for windsports. 'With the right investments and partnerships, Goa can emerge as Asia's leading hub for beach and coastal sports tourism, attracting participants and visitors from across the globe, much like Tarifa has done for Europe,' Khaunte said. The minister said Tarifa, which lies at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula and is known for its windy beaches, has transformed itself into the 'wind capital of Europe' through kitesurfing and windsurfing. He said this shows how targeted positioning can help attract 'quality' tourists and create a thriving sports economy. 'Goa is uniquely positioned to become a premier beach sports destination. With over 100 km of pristine coastline, favourable marine conditions and a globally recognised tourism brand, our state offers ideal conditions for beach and water-based sports, such as volleyball, football, windsurfing, sailing, regattas, surfing, kiteboarding and beach cricket. The year-round pleasant climate, scenic beaches like Morjim, Arambol, Calangute and Colva and robust hospitality infrastructure enable hosting high-profile events across multiple seasons,' Khaunte said. He was responding to a calling attention motion moved by MGP MLA Jit Arolkar in the Assembly on Friday. Arolkar said there was an urgent need to position Goa 'not just as a tourist state, but also as a beach sports destination'. 'Countries like Australia, Brazil and Thailand have successfully promoted beach sports like volleyball, surfing, beach cricket, and kiteboarding to attract quality tourists and extend the tourist season. I urge the government to aggressively position Goa as a beach sports tourist destination by identifying beaches like Morjim, Arambol, Calangute, Colva and others and create the best infrastructure to host national and international beach sports events,' Arolkar said. Khaunte said the state has a proven track record of hosting global sporting events, citing the successful hosting of Ironman 70.3 Triathlon, the Rainforest Challenge, Beach Volleyball World Tour, and the World Table Tennis Star Contender. 'These events are not just competitions. They stimulate high-value tourism, generate employment, benefit allied sectors and strengthen brand Goa on the global map,' the minister said. Khaunte said the Tourism department envisions expanding coastal sports tourism through developing flagship sailing and regatta events, leveraging Goa's natural marine advantages, establishing dedicated beach sports infrastructure at identified locations, partnering with national and international sporting bodies for recurring events in disciplines like beach volleyball, windsurfing, and kiteboarding and curating integrated sports and leisure festivals to enhance spectator engagement and extend tourist stays. 'Positioning Goa as a premier beach sports tourism hub will require joint and coordinated efforts between the department of Tourism, department of Sports and other line departments to align infrastructure, event promotion, and talent development,' he said.

PSG signs goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier from Lille

Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain signed goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier from Lille on a five-year contract on Saturday, amid increasing uncertainty over Gianluigi Donnarumma's future at the club. The transfer fee was not disclosed, but French sports daily L'Équipe reported that PSG paid just over 40 million euros ($46.5 million) for the 23-year-old Chevalier, with the deal potentially rising to 55 million euros in case of future bonuses. Chevalier impressed for Lille in the Champions League last season. He caught the eye with stellar performances against Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Juventus, where he made one stunning save from Dušan Vlahovic that even the Juve striker applauded. 'I am a kid who is living his dream. Ever since I was small I wanted to play at the very highest level,' Chevalier said. 'I'm really delighted to be here. I will wear this shirt with passion and ambition,' he added. Chevalier came through Lille's reputed youth academy and played 127 games for the northern club. Quick and agile, he is particularly strong when coming off his line and has great anticipation, although he does not always look assured when dealing with crosses and corners. Donnarumma was arguably the best goalkeeper in Europe last season, playing a key role in PSG's Champions League success with inspired shot-stopping in the knockout stages. But with one year left on his contract, he has so far refused to sign a new contract and PSG is unlikely to let him leave for free at the end of the season, having already experienced the same situation with Kylian Mbappé. PSG is already well stocked with three backup goalkeepers: Matvei Safonov, Arnau Tenas, and 19-year-old Renato Martin. Five goalies could prove problematic to manage so at least one, and probably two, will need to leave during the summer transfer window. Donnarumma was in a similar position to Chevalier when he joined the club after helping Italy win the European Championship in 2021. He replaced Keylor Navas as No. 1, even though Navas had been outstanding for PSG the previous season. PSG begins its league campaign at Nantes on Aug. 17.

Football: German club defends calling off signing of Israeli striker, chairman justifies decision

Shon Weissman (Images via Getty Images) Fortuna Düsseldorf chairman Klaus Allofs has defended the German club's decision to withdraw from signing Israeli striker Shon Weissman following opposition from sections of the fanbase over the player's social media activity relating to the Gaza conflict. The second-division side had been in advanced talks to bring Weissman from Spanish club Granada but announced on Tuesday that the move would not go ahead. While the club did not specify the reason at the time, a later statement explained that Weissman's past online statements and how they were handled did not align with Fortuna's values. Fans had raised objections to the 29-year-old's posts expressing support for Israel's actions in Gaza after the events of October 7, 2023. Weissman has since set his Instagram account to private. Speaking ahead of Düsseldorf's match against Hannover on Saturday, Allofs rejected claims the club's stance was antisemitic. 'It's absurd, to put it bluntly,' he said. 'We tried to sign a player, which is legitimate. It's also part of our values, that we don't limit ourselves with prejudices and rule things out from the start.' Allofs added that the decision was reached after consultation with Jewish community members in Düsseldorf, noting that while the process could have been quicker, the club wanted to consider the matter carefully. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like With temperatures hitting 95°F, this is the mini air conditioner everyone's buying in the U.S News of the Discovery Undo Weissman, who joined Granada in 2022, had previously faced security concerns related to his social media activity.
