Clive Palmer's United Australia Party, Trumpet of Patriots hit in ‘ransomware cyber attack'

News.com.au17-07-2025
Clive Palmer's two political parties – the Trumpet of Patriots and United Australia Party (UAP) – have been targeted in a 'ransomware cyber attack'.
The UAP and Trumpet of Patriots confirmed it had identified an unauthorised access to its servers on June 23.
'We identified unauthorised access to our servers resulting in access to, and the possible exfiltration of, certain data records,' the statement read.
'We were the subject of a ransomware cyber attack.'
The data records breached in the hack potentially include all emails to and from the political parties - including their attachments - and documents and records created and or held electronically by the political parties at any time in the past, the statement continued.
The parties confirmed the breach may include people's personal information, including email address, phone number, identity and banking records, documents and employment history.
However, UAP and Trumpet for Patriots have said they were unsure what hackers accessed during the breach.
'We do not know comprehensively what information of yours was on the server, but you should assume that any information you have provided would have been stored on the server,' the statement read.
The political parties said because they 'do not keep records' of the individuals who were on the server, they 'determined it is impracticable to notify individuals'.
Instead, they said they have 'secured our systems and restored recoverable data from back up tapes'.
They have also reported the breach to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) and to the Australian Signals Directorate.
Affected people have been urged to monitor their bank accounts, change their passwords and enable two-factor authentication as a precaution.
'We recommend that you review your communications (emails and mail) with us to identify any information you have provided to us and consider what other information might be affected,' the parties said.
'We recommend you carefully consider whether you need to take any action in response to the data breach on the assumption that the hackers may have accessed your data.
'We urge you to follow general precautionary steps and remain vigilant about the misuse of your personal information.'

Man pleads guilty to murdering co-worker Tshewang Choden at National Zoo and Aquarium in Canberra

The man responsible for a brutal stabbing murder at Canberra's zoo in December 2023 has pleaded guilty in the ACT Supreme Court today. Warning: This story contains graphic details. Jude Widjesinghe, 31, was to have faced trial later this year on a single charge of murder, after Tshewang Choden was stabbed to death in a storeroom in the kitchen area where they both worked. Court documents have revealed the dramatic moment when staff found Widjesinghe covered in blood, sitting in the storeroom. They'd come running when they heard screams but at first were unable to get into the storeroom. Widjesinghe then came out holding the knife, as the other staff fled. By the time more people arrived Widjesinghe was on the ground having injured himself. He was disarmed when a co-worker stood on his wrist to make him drop the knife. Ms Choden was found in the storeroom. She had been stabbed 14 times, with the fatal blows to the neck and chest. Court materials reveal Widjesinghe had worked in the kitchen for a year-and-a-half where he met Ms Choden. In June 2023, Widjesinghe sent Ms Choden a message saying she had the "prettiest name in the world". But when he asked her out for dinner when they were both free she declined. When Ms Choden began dating someone else, she told others that Widjesinghe began to be moody towards her and if other males spoke to her he would get mad and stop talking to her. The pair had worked together on the same shift, but by the time of the murder Ms Choden was doing morning shifts, with Widjesinghe working later. On the day of the murder Widjesinghe and Ms Choden were in the kitchen with another colleague who left soon afterwards. It was shortly after this that workers nearby heard the first screams, and went running to see what was happening. The court documents show in the lead up to the murder Widjesinghe began telling people he was moving back to Sri Lanka, even selling his car. He also wrote letters to friends and relations and sent text messages to say goodbye. Widjesinghe was rushed to hospital after the incident, where he was later charged with murder. He was to have faced trial later this year, but today that was set aside as he pleaded guilty. Widjesinghe will face a sentencing hearing in October.

Netflix crocodile wrangler Matt Wright pleads not guilty to perverting justice over Chris Wilson's fatal NT crash

Celebrity crocodile wrangler Matt Wright has pleaded not guilty to the attempting to pervert the course of justice, three years after the death of co-star Chris Wilson. The Netflix formally entered pleas of not guilty at the Northern Territory Supreme Court in Darwin on Monday, with a trial set to get underway on Wednesday July 30. The charges relate to the fatal helicopter crash in remote western Arnhem Land in February 2022 which killed Mr Wilson, a close friend of Mr Wright. Mr Wilson is alleged to have been suspended underneath the Robinson R44 helicopter on an 100-foot sling on a crocodile egg collecting mission at the time of the crash. The pilot, 28-year-old Sebastian Robinson, suffered permanent injuries as a result of the crash. Mr Wright has strenuously denied the allegations and will return to court on Wednesday. He was supported at court on Monday by his wife, Kaia Wright. Mr Wright is most well known for his role hosting National Geographic's Outback Wrangler, as well as the Netflix series Wild Croc Territory in 2022.
