Mets Make Decision on $75 Million Star Pitcher

Yahoo29-04-2025

This past offseason, left-handed starting pitcher Sean Manaea signed a three-year, $75 million contract to return to the New York Mets. This came after a dominant 2024 season in which he threw 181.2 innings and had a 3.47 ERA. He also accumulated 3.0 bWAR and had a 12-6 record.
Manaea played an integral part in the Mets making it to the NLCS last season, and as a result, he was a priority for New York in free agency. But unfortunately, Manaea would be shut down during Spring Training after a right oblique strain and has yet to pitch a game in Queens this season.

As Manaea continues to progress, the Mets have made a cautionary decision on his ramp-up process to ensure his long-term health.

According to MLB's Anthony DiComo, 'Sean Manaea received an MRI today that showed improvement, and he resumed playing catch off flat ground. He will not, however, progress beyond that over the next 10 days. The Mets want to make extra sure he's fine before pushing him.'
The Mets are not going to rush Manaea back to the mound, as they want to make sure he is fully healthy for their playoff push later in the season. Despite his absence, New York has rallied to produce the best pitching staff in MLB this season. In 15 games entering Monday, they led the majors in ERA while allowing the fewest home runs.
They have powered the Mets to an early 11-5 record which sits atop the National League East division.

Alonso and McNeil both homer twice as Mets rout Rockies 13-5 for season sweep

DENVER (AP) — Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil each hit two of New York's six home runs, and the Mets routed Colorado 13-5 on Sunday to sweep the major league-worst Rockies for the second time in a week. Brett Baty and Francisco Alvarez also went deep for the Mets, who completed a 5-2 trip and finished 6-0 against Colorado (12-53) this season. They moved a season-best 18 games over .500 at 42-24 and opened a 4 1/2-game lead in the NL East over skidding Philadelphia. Juan Soto went 3 for 3 with three walks and three runs on a perfect day at the plate, reaching base six times in a game for the first time in his career. Alonso launched a pair of two-run shots for his 23rd multihomer game, breaking a tie with Darryl Strawberry for the most in Mets history. The first baseman has 243 career homers, passing David Wright for second place in franchise annals — nine behind Strawberry. ___ AP MLB:

MLB Makes Strong Aaron Judge Statement on Sunday

MLB Makes Strong Aaron Judge Statement on Sunday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox prepare for Sunday night's series finale at Yankee Stadium, with first pitch set for 7:10 p.m. ET on ESPN, Major League Baseball made a pointed move of its own on Sunday morning. Advertisement Just hours before the rubber match in the storied AL East rivalry, MLB took to X to shine a spotlight on Aaron Judge's numbers through 63 games, figures that sit comfortably among the all-time great offensive campaigns. Major League Baseball posted that Judge "is putting together an all-time season: AVG: .390 HR: 21 RBI: 51 OBP: .488 SLG: .746 OPS: 1.234." His batting average (.390), slugging percentage (.746), on-base percentage (.488) and on-base plus slugging percentage (1.233) comfortably lead the MLB this season. Judge's 21 home runs (third in MLB) and 51 RBIs (sixth in MLB) further solidify his standing as the league's premier slugger. Advertisement He also leads the league in hits (92) and ranks second in runs (59). New York Yankees third baseman Oswald Peraza (left) and designated hitter Aaron Judge. John Froschauer-Imagn Images Since his debut with the Yankees on Aug. 13, 2016, Judge has steadily built a resume packed with milestones, including six All-Star selections, four Silver Slugger Awards and two Hank Aaron Awards (given to the top offensive performer in each league). He is also a two-time AL MVP (2022, 2024), including his record-breaking 62-homer season of 2022, which broke the previous Yankees franchise mark and stands as the American League single-season record. New York enters Sunday's finale tied at one game apiece in the three-game set after Boston's 10-7 victory on Saturday. SEE IT: Pete Alonso ties, then surpasses David Wright for second place on Mets' all-time home run list

Pete Alonso continues to rise up the Mets' all-time home run list. On Sunday afternoon at Coors Field, Alonso belted a two-run home run to left-center to put the Mets ahead 4-0 on the Colorado Rockies in the top of the third inning. The blast from Alonso was No. 242, tying David Wright for second on the franchise's all-time list and trailing only Darryl Strawberry, who logged 252 long balls in a Mets uniform. Advertisement Then, in the eighth inning, the Mets' slugger took sole possesion of second place, crushing a two-run shot down the left field line for No. 243 to put the team up 12-3. The pair of two-run dingers also bumped Alonso's season RBI to a league-leading 61. While Wright wasn't the same pure power hitter as Alonso, it's worth nothing that Wright hit his 242nd home run in his 1,583rd career game, while Alonso accomplished the same number in just 912 career games. Here's a look at how the Polar Bear took another step closer to making Mets history:
