Romulus man killed in two-vehicle crash on Kansas state highway
The crash happened about 7:30 p.m. Saturday, on K-61 in Reno County, two miles east of Turon. That city is west of Wichita.
Martin P. McLaughlin, 68, of Romulus, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the report. He was driving a 2024 Ford F150 pickup.
The other vehicle was a 2017 Peterbilt semi tractor trailer, driven by Ryan R. Purchase of Ludington, Michigan. Purchase was taken to Reno County Hospital with a suspected serious injury, the report said.
McLaughlin was driving southbound on K-51, while the semi truck was northbound, the report said. The vehicles collided head on in the southbound lane.
The pickup, which ended up on the road, became fully engulfed in flames, the report said.
The truck went off the road to the left and stopped upright in a ditch.

Suspected DUI driver arrested in fiery Sacramento crash that left 3 dead
A suspected DUI driver who was in the hospital was booked into jail after a fiery crash in Sacramento left three people dead earlier this month, police said on Thursday. The crash happened in the early morning hours of Aug. 2 and involved a Ford F-150 and a Dodge Charger near Roseville Road and Connie Drive. Police said it appeared the Ford rolled over and the Dodge was on fire when an officer on routine patrol came across the crash. Two people were found inside the Dodge and died at the scene, police said. A third person who appeared to be ejected from the Dodge was also pronounced dead at the scene. The police department said the driver of the Ford, now identified as 27-year-old Christian Garcia, sustained injuries and showed signs of intoxication. Police said Garcia was taken to a hospital due to injuries sustained in the crash. On Aug. 7, Garcia was booked into the Sacramento County Jail on charges of DUI resulting in great bodily injury or death. The Sacramento County coroner identified the three victims as 22-year-old Mohammad Durrani, 25-year-old Omar Durrani and 24-year-old Hashmatullah Durrani.

New details surface on Dodgers' $1 million pledge during ICE raids in Los Angeles
The Los Angeles Dodgers offered no timeline on June 20 when they announced they had committed $1 million 'toward direct financial assistance for families of immigrants impacted by recent events in the region.'' Almost eight weeks later, with protests over the Dodgers' response to the immigration raids having ended, a non-profit group working with the team provided new details. The $1 million will be distributed to 1,000 households, each which will receive $1,000 by the end of the month, according to California Community Foundation (CCF), a philanthropic organization in Los Angeles. 'The Dodgers' generous gift of $1 million to the CCF LA Neighbors Fund will provide relief to 1,000 Los Angeles households struggling to meet their basic needs due to the immigration raids,'' CCF said in a statement provided to USA TODAY Sports. 'Each will receive $1,000 in direct cash relief, delivered before the end of August 2025, as cash cards through trusted community partners in partnership with the City of Los Angeles." The Dodgers did not immediately respond to requests for comment USA TODAY Sports submitted by text message. Since June 6, ICE and CBP have made more than 4,200 arrests in the Los Angeles area, according to Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin. 'We will continue to enforce the law and remove the worst of the worst,'' McLaughlin told USA TODAY Sports by email. The Dodgers, who have enjoyed longtime support from the Latino community, were criticized for failing to address the immigration crackdown for two weeks prior to announcing the commitment of $1 million. The day before the announcement, the team said that it had denied ICE agents access to parking lots at Dodger Stadium. Until that point, the Dodgers had issued no statement related to the raids that triggered sometimes-violent protests downtown. "What's happening in Los Angeles has reverberated among thousands upon thousands of people, and we have heard the calls for us to take a leading role on behalf of those affected,'' Dodgers president Stan Kasten said in a statement at the time of the announcement. "We believe that by committing resources and taking action, we will continue to support and uplift the communities of Greater Los Angeles.' Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass, in a June 21 news release about the team's commitment, thanked the Dodgers 'for leading with this action to support the immigrant community of Los Angeles.'' That same day, however, protesters returned to Dodger Stadium and at least two held signs that read, 'Dodgers want you to shut up for $1 million.'' Others criticized the Dodgers for not giving more. More than 200 donors, including the Dodgers, have helped raise $2.6 million for the CCF LA Neighbors Fund, 'which will provide additional resources to the City of LA's assistance program as well as nonprofit organizations providing direct aid to people across the County who are in need as a result of the ongoing raids,'' according to the statement CCF provided USA TODAY Sports.

Suspect arrested in shooting deaths of 4 at rural bar in Montana

Photo by Montana Department of Justice/Facebook Aug. 8 (UPI) -- The suspect in a shooting that killed four people at a bar in rural western Montana was arrested Friday, seven days after a multiagency manhunt. Michael Paul Brown, a 45-year-old Army veteran, was arrested at 2 p.m. local time in the search area in Anaconda, the Montana Department of Justice said. The shooting occurred on Aug.1 in Anaconda, which is 130 miles east of Idaho and 198 miles west of Bozeman, Mont. He is in the custody of the Anaconda-Deer Lodge authorities. "Incredible response from law enforcement officers across Montana," Gov. Greg Gianforte posted on X. "May God continue to be with the families of the four victims still grieving their loss." During a news conference, he appeared with several involved in the search. "These brave men and women in uniform sacrificed their lives and time away from family to ensure this killer was brought to justice," he said. "We think that was directly correlated to flushing him out today -- getting him down into an area that we know we had searched before," Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen said. "It was not someplace he'd been hiding. He was flushed out." He was armed. Authorities with 38 agencies -- local, state and federal -- were searching for him, including in the western Montana wilderness. "I am proud of the unrelenting law enforcement effort this week to find and arrest Michael Paul Brown," Knudsen said at the news conference. "The support we've seen for the community of Anaconda from across the state and the nation has also been remarkable." Killed were bartender Nancy Kelley, 64; and three patrons: Daniel Baillie, 59; Nancy Kelley, 64; David Leach, 70, and Tony Palm, 74. "It just isn't real. It's totally overwhelming," said Cassandra Dutra, a bartender at the Owl Bar who wasn't working at the time, said in a CNN report. He was a known regular at the bar. Brown served in the Iraq war and the Montana National Guard.
