Detroit man charged with fatally shooting his girlfriend on Valentine's Day

(CBS DETROIT) - A Detroit man has been charged with first-degree murder and felony firearm in connection with the fatal shooting of his girlfriend on Valentine's Day. Desuan Travon Ross, 31, was arraigned on those charges and remanded to jail after a magistrate hearing Sunday in 36th District Court, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Officer reported. A probable cause hearing is scheduled for Feb. 24; preliminary exam is scheduled for March 3. Eboni Robinson, 29, also of Detroit, was the victim. A press release from Prosecutor Kym Worthy related the following circumstances: Shortly before 9 a.m. Friday, Detroit Police went to a home in the 17400 block of Washburn on report of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found Robinson's vehicle crashed into the front porch of a home on the opposite side of the street, with the woman still inside, showing signs of multiple gunshot wounds. Medics were called to the scene and pronounced her dead. "It is alleged that the defendant and the victim were engaged in an argument inside the victim's vehicle. When the altercation escalated, it is alleged that the defendant exited the vehicle and fired a handgun multiple times into the driver's side window, striking the victim," the prosecutor's office said. "After the victim's vehicle traveled to the opposite side of the street and crashed, it is further alleged that Defendant Ross fired a rifle multiple times into the driver's side window, fatally wounding Ms. Robinson." In response to the case, the Wayne County Prosecutor's office added that help is available for those experiencing domestic violence. A list of resources including support services and shelters is on the prosecutor's website.

Michigan DNR reminds snowmobilers to "Ride Right," keeping safety in mind

(CBS DETROIT) - Plenty of snow cover in the state, along with a mid-winter holiday, means that the Michigan Department of Natural Resources expects a flurry of recreational snowmobile activity in the coming days. Presidents Day, which is a federal and state holiday in Michigan, is Monday, and that means a three-day weekend for many people. Ahead of the weekend, DNR sent out safety reminders from its Ride Right snowmobile campaign should recreational activities include snowmobiling. There have already been 10 snowmobile fatalities in Michigan during the 2024-25 winter. "Unfortunately, many of the fatalities we see are related to factors that could have been avoided: speed, primarily, such as taking a corner too fast, not being able to stop in time and colliding into a tree, vehicle or another rider," said Cpl. Mike Hearn, snowmobile and off-road vehicle specialist with the DNR Law Enforcement Division. Basic tips are to operate while sober, operate at a safe speed, and stay on the right side of the trail. Additional reminders from the DNR include always wearing a helmet, only carry a passenger if the machine was manufactured for more than one person, and don't exceed the abilities of a group's least experienced rider. Those who are riding on or near ice should monitor conditions for pressure cracks and other signs of breaking ice. All snowmobile operators in Michigan age 12 through 16 must earn a state-approved snowmobile safety certificate to operate one without a legal guardian or to cross a highway or street. Michigan's public snowmobile trails are free to use one weekend a year without a trail permit. Many of those public trails are in the northern and western parts of the state, including the Upper Peninsula. The free snowmobiling weekend for 2025 took place Jan. 17-19.

Temporary overnight closures scheduled for I-696 in Southfield, ahead of construction effort

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) - A temporary westbound closure will happen before eastbound Interstate 696 traffic in the Southfield area is forced into a detour. The MIchigan Department of Transportation announced those plans for overnight hours during the weekend of Feb. 21 through Feb. 23, on westbound I-696 from I-75 to Lahser Road. Specifically, that section of westbound I-696 will be closed from 10 p.m. Feb. 1 to 6 a.m. Feb 22, and then again from 10 p.m. Feb. 22 to 6 a.m. Feb. 23. Portable message boards will signal a detour via southbound I-75 to westbound M-8 (Davison Highway); then northbound M-10 (Lodge Freeway) to westbound I-696. The temporary closure will allow crews to do overhead electrical work and bridge deck sounding inspections in preparation for the bigger project that starts March 1. The Restore the Reuther project begins its last major phase March 1; with eastbound and westbound I-696 entirely rebuilt between Lahser Road and I-75 during 2025-2026. More than 60 bridges will be repaired. For those two years, eastbound traffic on I-696 will detour on southbound M-10 (Lodge Freeway), eastbound M-8 (Davison Highway), and northbound I-75 back to eastbound I-696. Westbound traffic will stay on the interstate lanes. Spinning off from that effort, I-696 will get major road work between I-75 and Dequindre Road during 2027. Project information is available at .
