Take-Two soars after forecast signals mobile gaming rebound
(Reuters) -Take-Two Interactive Software shares rose 5.6% on Friday as the Zynga owner's strong forecast signaled a rebound in the mobile gaming industry following a years-long post-pandemic slump.
Once seen as the video-gaming industry's next big growth driver, the mobile market sputtered over the past few years as people spent more time outdoors after lockdowns and high inflation deterred non-essential spending by consumers.
That left investors waiting for payoffs from mobile gaming deals such as Take-Two's 2022 buyout of Zynga for $12.7 billion.
But Take-Two's raised annual forecast and better-than-expected results for the April-June period offered the clearest sign yet that the U.S. mobile-gaming market was bouncing back.
"We've seen so much momentum in a lot of our big titles and some of our titles that have really started to take off since the fourth quarter of last year and into this first quarter," finance chief Lainie Goldstein said.
Take-Two, whose fiscal year runs from April to March, makes puzzle-based mobile titles such as "Match Factory," "Color Block Jam" and "Toon Blast." Those games helped it post a nearly 17% jump in bookings - a revenue indicator - in its fiscal first quarter.
"Raises after first-quarter beats are generally rare in this industry, particularly with major releases still to come, but the ongoing strength in mobile leaves ample room for a simple passthrough of the upside," TD Cowen analysts said.
The mobile-gaming market is also benefiting from the growing integration of live-service features into titles to keep players spending. That helped in-app purchase revenue rise to $81.7 billion last year from $78.6 billion in 2023, Sensor Tower data showed.
Take-Two is set to add over $2 billion to its market cap if premarket gains hold.
Apart from the mobile business, Take-Two has large premium titles in its pipeline including "Mafia: The Old Country," set to release on Friday, as well as "Borderlands 4" and "Grand Theft Auto VI," all of which are expected to sell millions of copies.
"Between Take-Two's current performance, their upcoming releases like Mafia and Borderlands, and, of course, GTA VI, the firm should be optimistic," said Joost van Dreunen, games professor at NYU Stern School of Business.

Stocks are seeing support from speculation that weaker-than-expected US economic news and recent dovish Fed commentary will push the Fed to lower interest rates as soon as next month. On Thursday, President Trump nominated Stephen Miran to be a temporary replacement for Adrianna Kugler as Fed Governor until the end of the year. Miran is currently chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors and is seen as dovish and supporting President Trump's calls for lower interest rates. The chances of a Fed rate cut at the September FOMC meeting rose to 91% from 40% last Friday. Stocks extended their gains today as market sentiment improved after Bloomberg News reported that the US and Russia are aiming for a deal to end the war in Ukraine. Russia said it would halt its offensive in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions of Ukraine along the current battlelines as part of the deal if Ukraine cedes its entire eastern Donbas area to Russia as well as Crimea. In recent tariff news, President Trump announced Wednesday that he will impose a 100% tariff on semiconductor imports. Still, companies would be eligible for exemptions if they demonstrate a commitment to building their products in the US. However, the US will levy a separate tax on imports of electronic products that employ semiconductors. Also, President Trump announced Wednesday that he will double tariffs on US imports from India to 50% from the current 25% tariff, due to India's purchases of Russian oil. On Tuesday, Mr. Trump said that US tariffs on pharmaceutical imports would be announced 'within the next week or so.' According to Bloomberg Economics, the average US tariff will rise to 15.2% if rates are implemented as announced, up from 13.3% earlier, and significantly higher than the 2.3% in 2024 before the tariffs were announced. Federal funds futures prices are discounting the chances for a -25 bp rate cut at 91% at the September 16-17 FOMC meeting and 64% at the following meeting on October 28-29. Earnings reports released thus far suggest that S&P 500 earnings for Q2 are on track to rise +9.1% y/y, much better than the pre-season expectations of +2.8% y/y and the most in four years, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. With over 79% of S&P 500 firms having reported Q2 earnings, around 83% exceeded profit estimates. Overseas stock markets today are mixed. The Euro Stoxx 50 is up +0.33%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -0.12%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 climbed to a 2-week high and closed up sharply by +1.85%. Interest Rates September 10-year T-notes (ZNU25) today are down by -7 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +2.7 bp to 4.277%. T-notes are moving lower today as strength in stocks has reduced safe-haven demand for government securities. Also, rising inflation expectations are negative for T-notes as the 10-year breakeven inflation rate rose to a 1-week high today of 2.388%. Losses in T-notes are limited after President Trump late Thursday nominated Stephen Miran for Fed Governor to replace Adriana Kugler for the rest of the year. Miran views President Trump's policies as disinflationary and would support a more dovish Fed policy. European government bond yields today are moving higher. The 10-year German bund yield is up +5.5 bp to 2.685%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is up +5.0 bp to 4.507%. Swaps are discounting the chances at 9% for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at the September 11 policy meeting. Competing bid received in US auction of shares in Citgo's parent
(Reuters) -A U.S. federal court auctioning shares in the parent of Venezuela-owned U.S. refiner Citgo Petroleum to pay creditors for expropriations and debt defaults has received a competing bid, an officer overseeing the process said in a filing. A $7.4 billion bid by a group led by a subsidiary of Canadian miner Gold Reserve was recommended last month as winner of the bidding round, but the judge must still decide whether to approve it, following objections by some creditors and competitors. Officer Robert Pincus notified the court on the "unsolicited bid," according to a filing late on Thursday. He did not disclose the date of submission or the bidder's name. Gold Reserve said on Friday in a release that in early July the court had authorized Pincus to engage with the bidder, identified as "Bidder B," and reactivated its access to a data room set with key information about Citgo. Since the unsolicited bid was received, Pincus "has consistently engaged with Bidder B regarding its progress in furtherance of the proposed transaction," and the bidder is now in active discussions with parties whose consent or agreement is required for the proposed transaction, Gold Reserve added in the release. However, Pincus has not so far deemed the new bid to be a proposal superior to the Gold Reserve group's recommended offer, the miner said. Sign in to access your portfolio

Gold is Trading at Record High Levels—These Are The Key Price Levels to Watch
Key Takeaways Gold prices have rallied over the past week and are near record-high levels after a wave of profit-taking in late July. Since a shooting star pattern marked gold's high in late April, the commodity has consolidated in an ascending triangle, a bullish chart formation that signals a potential continuation of the longer-term uptrend. Investors should watch key overhead areas on spot gold's chart around $3,435 and $3,735, while also monitoring major support levels near $3,245 and $3, (XAUUSD) prices have rallied over the past week and are near record-high levels after a wave of profit-taking in late July. Investors have bid up the precious metal amid uncertainty over the outlook for the U.S. economy and expectations that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates in September, following July's weaker-than-expected employment report released last Friday. Gold tends to benefit from its reputation as a safe-haven asset during times of economic uncertainty, while lower rates also support the non-yielding asset. Reports that the U.S. will impose tariffs on imports of gold bars have also underpinned gains this week. The commodity has soared about 30% this year, boosted by concerns over the Trump administration's unpredictable trade policies—amid uncertainty about how tariffs will affect the economy—and ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Spot gold was trading at just under $3,400 per troy ounce recently. Below, we take a closer look at the spot gold price chart and use technical analysis to identify key levels that investors will likely be watching. Bullish Ascending Triangle Takes Shape Since a shooting star pattern marked gold's high in late April, the commodity has consolidated in an ascending triangle, a bullish chart formation that signals a potential continuation of the longer-term uptrend. More recently, the price has rallied from the triangle's lower trendline and reclaimed the respected 50-day moving average (MA), a move that has coincided with the relative strength index crossing back into bullish territory. Let's identify two key overhead areas to watch on gold's chart if the recent upward momentum continues and also point out major support levels worth monitoring during possible retracements. Key Overhead Areas to Watch The first overhead area to watch sits around $3,435. This location on the chart would likely provide significant resistance near four distinct peaks that form the ascending triangle's top trendline. Investors can forecast a bullish price target above gold's all-time high by using the measured move technique, a tool that analyzes chart patterns to project future price movements. When applying this analysis, we calculate the distance of the ascending triangle near its widest section and add that amount to the pattern's top trendline. For instance, we add $300 to $3,435, which projects a target of $3,735, about 10% above the commodity's current trading levels. Major Support Levels Worth Monitoring During retracements, investors should initially monitor how gold's price responds to the $3,245 level. The metal may find support in this area near a range of corresponding price action on the chart between April and June. Finally, a breakdown below the ascending triangle's lower trendline could see the commodity's price revisit lower support around $3,150. Investors may look to accumulate gold in this region near the April peak, which closely aligns with the completion of a pullback to the 50-day MA in mid-May.
