Gunfire erupts during Mpumalanga liquor store robbery: 2 arrested, cop wounded
Ridge Times reports that the shoot-out, which happened on Tuesday, saw a 38-year-old police constable wounded in the crossfire.
According to Mpumalanga Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, police officers from Leandra were conducting routine patrols in the area when they encountered a robbery in progress. The suspects allegedly opened fire on the officers, who retaliated. It was during this exchange that the constable was shot in the hip. He was transported to hospital for medical treatment.
Preliminary investigations suggest that a gang of about seven armed men, wearing police reflector vests, entered a liquor outlet in Leandra. They allegedly identified themselves as police officials on duty, investigating counterfeit liquor. The suspects reportedly questioned the owner and spent nearly an hour at the premises before trying to carry out an armed robbery.
At that point, members of the Leadra Visible Policing unit arrived on the scene, prompting the shoot-out.
Some of the suspects managed to evade arrest during the gunfire and fled, abandoning a white BMW 3 Series, with a false registration number, and a white Ford Focus that had reportedly been stolen in Bronkhorstspruit in March. Both vehicles were seized and taken to the police station for further investigation.
Believing that not all suspects had fled, police conducted a search of the area, which led to the arrest of two suspects who were found hiding in an enclosed storeroom. They were charged with attempted murder, armed robbery and possession of suspected stolen vehicles.
Crime scene experts are continuing to process the area, and further developments are expected as the investigation unfolds.
The arrested suspects are expected to appear in the Leslie Periodical Court tomorrow.
The remaining suspects are still at large.
Acting provincial commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, welcomed the arrests and condemned the attack on law enforcement.
'Attacking police officers will be dealt with accordingly. We will not rest until the remaining suspects are brought to justice,' he said.
Police are appealing to the public who may have information that could assist in their arrest to contact Detective Constable Thembayona Mkhulisi on 066 577 6013 or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Alternatively, tip-offs can be sent via the MySAPS App. All information received will be treated confidentially, and callers may remain anonymous.

Arrest warrant for national police commissioner? NPA weighs in
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA)'s Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) has clarified that there is no warrant of arrest issued against national police commissioner Fannie Masemola. This comes as rumours have been circulating on social media about the purported warrant of arrest. IDAC spokesperson Henry Mamothame said recently, they have received media queries relating to unfounded allegations of warrants having been issued for the arrest of Masemola. 'IDAC maintains what it has repeatedly confirmed to the media: These are untrue allegations; no such warrants have been issued,' he said. Shortly after KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi's explosive media briefing on 6 July, which sent shockwaves across the country, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema alleged that a warrant of arrest for the police commissioner had been signed. Malema said the only thing left to do was to execute the arrest, however, he could not understand why this had not been done. 'There is a warrant of arrest against Masemola, it's out, I don't understand why it has not been picked up. It means someone somewhere is playing politics; they want to undermine once more the independence of our justice system,' he said. Mom murdered, daughter raped: Man arrested in Limpopo
The Bandelierkop police, outside Louis Trichardt in Limpopo, have arrested a 33-year-old man in connection with the murder of his partner and the rape of her 16-year-old daughter. Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says the incident, which has shocked the community, began on Sunday when the suspect allegedly woke the teenager up and claimed they needed to look for her mother at local taverns in Mundzedzi village. Polokwane Review reports that the woman (36) was last seen on Saturday at a local tavern. 'After failing to locate the mother, the suspect led the minor towards bushes next to the Vleifontein cemetery, where he allegedly raped her. The suspect then instructed the teenager to return home. 'The brave victim immediately reported the rape to a community member, who then contacted the police. A case of rape was opened, and a manhunt was launched, leading to the suspect's arrest,' says Ledwaba. During questioning yesterday, investigators discovered that the suspect had murdered the missing woman and disposed of her body in a pit toilet at a local school. 'The body was retrieved with the assistance of relevant stakeholders, and the suspect now faces an additional charge of murder,' Ledwaba says. Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe expressed outrage at the incident, particularly during Women's Month. 'This crime represents the worst of gender-based violence: A man who was supposed to protect this family instead became their worst nightmare. That he would murder a woman and then rape her teenage daughter shows the depths of depravity we are fighting against,' she says. Hadebe commended the bravery of the teenage survivor in reporting the crime and the swift police response. Ledwaba says the suspect remains in police custody and will appear in court soon, facing charges of rape and murder.
