Former Super Bowl champion doesn't expect Philadelphia Eagles 'hangover' in 2025

Yahoo3 days ago
The Super Bowl is every NFL team's goal heading into a new season, and 2025 will be the same as 31 teams try to chase down the Philadelphia Eagles as the reigning league champions.
The Eagles boasted one of the top defensive units in 2024, and while one former Philadelphia star that recently retired won't be competing this season he still has massive expectations for his old squad.
Brandon Graham was a two-time Super Bowl winner with the Birds after spending his entire career with the franchise, and recently joined the Exciting Whites podcast with Reed Blankenship and Cooper DeJean to share his thoughts on Philadelphia's chances of a repeat.
The reality is it's very tough for any NFL team to win back-to-back championships, and the Eagles actually just prevented the Kansas City Chiefs from securing a three-peat last season after their Super Bowl LIX title.

Jets bolster defensive line with trade for Browns' Jowon Briggs

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets acquired defensive tackle Jowon Briggs from the Cleveland Browns in a trade Wednesday that also included draft picks. The Browns also sent a seventh-round pick in next year's NFL draft to New York for a sixth-rounder next year. Briggs had 13 tackles with two quarterback hits in six games for Cleveland last season after being a seventh-round selection. The 6-foot-1, 313-pound D-lineman had 12 career sacks and 170 tackles during a college career that began at Virginia (2019-20) and finished with three years at Cincinnati (2021-23). Briggs adds depth to a defensive line in New York that's led by three-time Pro Bowl pick Quinnen Williams and includes Micheal Clemons, Jay Tufele, Will McDonald and Rashad Weaver. Defensive tackle Byron Cowart has missed time in training camp with an ankle injury, so the addition of Briggs could help fill that void for the Jets if Cowart is sidelined for an extended time. ___ AP NFL:

Minnesota's trend-bucking embrace of the pass will be tested as Drake Lindsey succeeds Max Brosmer

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Max Brosmer's short-but-stellar stay shaped Minnesota into a dangerous passing team last season, when the Gophers threw the ball more times than they ran it for the first time in 17 years. Brosmer is in the NFL now, a promising prospect playing just down the road with the Vikings who has handed the reins to the offense to redshirt freshman Drake Lindsey. Therein lies the biggest questions facing the Gophers in 2025: How quickly can Lindsey develop, and how committed will coach P.J. Fleck and offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Greg Harbaugh Jr. remain to the passing attack? With Darius Taylor returning to the backfield, a steer of the play calling back toward the program's roots wouldn't be at all surprising. The junior, who rushed for career highs of 986 yards and 10 touchdowns in 12 games last season, was fifth in the Big Ten in rushing yards per game in 2024. 'Whatever the game plan calls for, I'm going to do, and my quarterback will do as well,' Taylor said. 'I think our team is more than capable of playing in both facets of the game.' The Gophers, who open at home against Buffalo on Aug. 28, won an eighth straight bowl game to finish 8-5 last year. Taylor also caught 54 passes for 350 yards and two scores during the process, as Brosmer's prowess in his lone season after transferring from New Hampshire also gave him a boost as a receiver. 'I love catching the ball,' said Taylor, who began his high school career in Detroit as a wide receiver. 'It's exciting to get into space.' Mr. Everything There's hardly a Gophers player who's generated more hype than safety Koi Perich, who was a first team All-Big Ten selection as a freshman last season and will also add wide receiver to his existing kick returning role this year in an attempt to maximize the myriad talents of the second team preseason All-America pick. 'Why wouldn't you take one of your best players,' Fleck said, 'and find unique ways to put the ball in his hand?' Disruptive presence New defensive coordinator Danny Collins must replace six starters, including cornerback Justin Walley, a third-round NFL draft pick. But with Perich and Kerry Brown at safety, seven interceptions return from last year. And between Deven Eastern and Jalen Logan-Redding, there are 61 career starts back for the interior of the line. Then there's defensive end Anthony Smith, who's considered Minnesota's best NFL prospect for 2026 after his 11½ tackles for loss last season were the most by a Gophers player in six years. 'I think Anthony Smith can be the best one to ever play here, since we've been here on the defensive line,' said Collins, who's been on Fleck's staff for all nine seasons. 'I think the sky is the limit for him.' Pass-catching committee The Gophers are counting on depth to carry their wide receiver group with transfers Logan Loya (UCLA) and Javon Tracy (Miami of Ohio) bringing nearly 2,500 career yards between them. Loya is a sixth-year player who was a captain for the Bruins last season. Tracy was a first team all-conference pick in 2024 for the RedHawks who has two years of eligibility left. Le'Meke Brockington is the leading returning player, with redshirt freshman Jalen Smith the most likely prospect to carve out a contributing role — along with the wild card that is Perich. 'There's not this one name that everybody knows like Daniel Jackson or Rashod Bateman or Tyler Johnson,' Fleck said, listing three former Gophers currently with NFL teams, including last season's leading receiver, Jackson. 'But collectively it has a chance to be one of our best units we've ever had here. They're very selfless.' Five spots, five new starters Three mainstays are gone from the offensive line including Aireontae Ersery, a second-round draft pick by the Houston Texans. With Greg Johnson moving from center to guard and Ashton Beers going vice versa, the Gophers will have a new starter at each position. The right side was filled out with the transfer portal: guard Marcellus Marshall (Central Florida) and tackle Dylan Ray (Kentucky). Manageable schedule Though the Gophers have road games against two of the top seven teams in the preseason AP poll, defending national champion Ohio State and defending Big Ten champion Oregon, they've got a lighter load than many of their conference peers by facing only two others among the predicted top 10 teams in the Big Ten media poll: Nebraska (home) and Iowa (road). Minnesota's nonconference slate also includes Northwestern State, which went 0-12 last season in the FCS, and California, which tied for 14th in its first year in the ACC and came in 15th in the preseason media poll. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Myles Garrett avoids speeding ticket questions, focuses on Browns defense

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Myles Garrett was expected to become a more vocal leader for the Cleveland Browns after signing a four-year contract extension worth $204.8 million in March. However, Garrett was quiet in his first comments since picking up his eighth speeding ticket since being drafted by the Browns in 2017. 'I'd honestly rather talk about football and this team than anything I'm doing off field other than the back to school event that I did the other day,' Garrett said on Wednesday. Garrett was asked a couple of other times about being cited for driving a Ferrari 100 mph on a suburban Cleveland interstate on Aug. 9. It got contentious when the All-Pro defensive end was asked what kind of leadership it showed to be pulled over for speeding shortly after the Browns came back from a road game. 'I've answered it two different times. I'm going to need you to ask a different question so I can focus on this team and not, you know, this headline you're trying to get out of these questions you're asking,' Garrett said. In 2022, Garrett flipped his Porsche when he veered off a rural road near his home following practice. He suffered a sprained shoulder, strained biceps, cuts and bruises in the wreck and was cited for failure to control his vehicle and unsafe speed. He missed one game because of the accident. When it comes to on-field matters, Garrett said he has noticed he has more leeway and a platform to lead during this training camp. That has included conversations with the coaching staff about the flow of the day's practices and what is being accomplished. Garrett also noted the changes have been more self driven instead of coming from coaches or ownership. 'I've heard that from multiple accounts with some players and coaches about the bit of a style change I've had of this year and being a bit more minute with the attention I give and the details that I bring, making sure the guys are bringing that same detail to the game and everybody being on the same page,' he said. "It's going to go as far as I want it to go and we're only strong as the weakest link. I feel like I've got to continue to improve and find a way to elevate my teammates, not just myself.' Despite Cleveland going 3-14 last season, Garrett had 14 sacks and finished third in AP Defensive Player of the Year voting. He also became the first player since sacks became an official statistic in 1982 to have four straight seasons with at least 14. Garrett's main focus is trying to get the Browns defense back on track. Cleveland had the league's stingiest unit in 2023, allowing only 270.2 yards per game but was 19th last season at 342.1 ypg. 'I think there were lapses in focus and discipline when we needed to be sharper," he said. "Whether that was in here or on the field. I think that it kind of leaks out. How you are every day is how you are when you need to be that person. I think how we've tightened up the ship and we've sharpened everything, I think we'll continue to get better, and we'll show not only glimpses but that we were and are that 2023 team.' Garrett and the rest of the starters are expected to see a couple of series in Saturday's preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams. He didn't play in the first two games after taking part in the joint workouts against the Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles. ___ AP NFL:
