'What a city': Son Heung-min lands at Los Angeles FC with plans for trophies, love for Korean fans

LOS ANGELES: Son Heung-min made his first visit to Los Angeles seven years ago during Tottenham's summer tour. He met with Los Angeles FC's Korean supporters club and even donned a sombrero from grateful Mexican fans thanking the South Korean forward for scoring a famous goal in the 2018 World Cup. Son planned another visit to Los Angeles and Las Vegas years ago, but he had to cancel the expensive trip after breaking his arm in a game. "I thought I might never come back to Los Angeles, but now I'm here," Son said with a laugh. Son knows he'll have plenty of time to enjoy the town this time around as he begins the next chapter of his groundbreaking career with LAFC. "I'm here to win, and I will perform," Son said Wednesday. "I will definitely show you something exciting ... are we calling it football or soccer? I will definitely show some exciting football, and we definitely will have success." LAFC formally introduced its new centerpiece at a packed news conference at BMO Stadium, where his likeness already looms over the main entrance gates and on video billboards for miles around the arena. The 33-year-old superstar is back on the Pacific Rim after a professional career spent in Europe, including the past decade at Spurs.

A former Tottenham teammate and the magic of Koreatown — Why did Son Heung-min move to LAFC?

Son Heung-min arrived in Los Angeles to a hero's welcome on both Tuesday and Wednesday as the former Tottenham star forward and team captain finalised a deal to compete with LAFC. On Tuesday evening, the Korean superstar observed his future squad's Leagues Cup game vs. Tigres (a 2-1 LAFC win) from a suite at BMO Stadium. Fans roared their approval when he was introduced and acknowledged the supporters. Golden Boot pedigree. World-class talent. Coming to a pitch near you 🔜 — LAFC (@LAFC) August 6, 2025 On Wednesday, he was formally introduced and met with the media after Tottenham and LAFC announced the record transfer. The deal is for three years, but with options for 2028 and the first half of 2029. Sources report the value as USD 26.5 million — an MLS record for a player transfer. 'LA,' Son said, 'what a city.' Many factors swung Son's decision to sign with the MLS squad. At the news conference, he credited LAFC general manager John Thorrington for convincing him that Los Angeles should be the next stop on his soccer journey. 'He changed my heart, he changed my brain,' Son said. 'He showed me the destination where I should be.' Son cited the thriving Korean community (around 320,000) in Los Angeles as another factor in his decision. 'As a Korean, to know that Koreatown here in Los Angeles has so many Koreans, here in this country, I'm very proud to be a part of the club and the city,' he said through the interpreter. 'And I'll make them proud with my performance.'
