As a leader, when you're looking at all of this volatility—the tariffs, consumer sentiment's been unclear, the stock market's been all over the place. You guys had a huge one-day drop in early May, and it quickly bounced back. How do you make sense of all these external factors?
Yeah, our focus is on what we can control. And ultimately, the thing that we are laser-focused on for our business is product velocity. How quickly can we start small with something, launch something for our customers, and then test and iterate and learn so that ultimately, that something that we've launched scales into an important product?
I'll give you an example. Cash App Borrow, which is a product where our customers can get access to a line of credit, often $100, $200, that bridges them from paycheck to paycheck. We know so many Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. That's a product that we launched about three years ago and have now scaled to serve 9 million actives with $15 billion in credit supply to our customers in a span of a couple short years.
The more we can be out testing and launching product at a pace, the more we know we are ultimately delivering value to our customers, and the right things will happen from a stock perspective.
Block is a financial services provider. You have Square, the point-of-sale system; the digital wallet Cash App, which you mentioned, which competes with Venmo and Robinhood; and a bunch of others. Then you've got the buy-now, pay-later leader Afterpay. You chair Square Financial Services, which is Block's chartered bank. But you've said that in the fintech world, Block is only a little bit fin—that comparatively, it's more tech. Can you explain what you mean by that?
What we think is unique about us is our ability as a technology company to completely change innovation in the space, such that we can help solve systemic issues across credit, payments, commerce, and banking. What that means ultimately is we use technologies like AI and machine learning and data science, and we use these technologies in a unique way, in a way that's different from a traditional bank. We are able to underwrite those who are often frankly forgotten by the traditional financial ecosystems.
Our Square Loans product has almost triple the rate of women-owned businesses that we underwrite. Fifty-eight percent of our loans go to women-owned businesses versus 20% for the industry average. For that Cash App Borrow product I was talking about, 70% of those actives, the 9 million actives that we underwrote, fell below 580 as a FICO score. That's considered a poor FICO score, and yet 97% of repayments are made on time. And this is because we have unique access to data and these technology and tools which can help us uniquely underwrite this often forgotten customer base.
Yeah. I mean, credit—sometimes it's been blamed for financial excesses. But access to credit is also, as you say, an advantage that's not available to everyone. Do you have a philosophy between those poles—between risk and opportunity? Or is what you're saying is that the tech you have allows you to avoid that risk?
That's right. Let's start with how do the current systems work? It works using inferior data, frankly. It's more limited data. It's outdated. Sometimes it's inaccurate. And it ignores things like someone's cash flows, the stability of your income, your savings rate, how money moves through your accounts, or how you use alternative forms of credit—like buy now, pay later, which we have in our ecosystem through Afterpay.
We have a lot of these signals for our 57 million monthly actives on the Cash App side and for the 4 million small businesses on the Square side, and those, frankly, billions of transaction data points that we have on any given day paired with new technologies. And we intend to continue to be on the forefront of AI, machine learning, and data science to be able to empower more people into the economy. The combination of the superior data and the technologies is what we believe ultimately helps expand access.
You have a financial background, but not in the financial services industry. Before Block, you were a video game developer at Activision. Are financial businesses and video games similar? Are there things that are similar about them?
There are. There actually are some things that are similar, I will say. There are many things that are unique to each industry. Each industry is incredibly complex. You find that when big technology companies try to do gaming. They've taken over the world in many different ways, but they can't always crack the nut on putting out a great game. Similarly, some of the largest technology companies have dabbled in fintech but haven't been able to go as deep, so they're both very nuanced and complex industries.
I would say another similarity is that design really matters. Industrial design, the design of products, the interface of products, is absolutely mission-critical to a great game, and it's absolutely mission-critical to the simplicity and accessibility of our products, be it on Square or Cash App.
And then maybe the third thing that I would say is that when I was in gaming, at least the business models were rapidly changing from an intermediary distribution mechanism, like releasing a game once and then selling it through a retailer, to an always-on, direct-to-consumer connection. And similarly with banking, people don't want to bank from 9 to 5, six days a week. They want 24/7 access to their money and the ability to, again, grow their financial livelihood, move their money around seamlessly. So, some similarities are there in that shift to an intermediary model or a slower model to an always-on, direct-to-consumer connection.
Part of your target audience or your target customer base at Block are Gen Z folks. Did you learn things at Activision about Gen Z that has been useful? Are there things that businesses misunderstand about younger generations still?
What we've learned is that Gen Z, millennial customers, aren't going to do things the way their parents did. Some of our stats show that 63% of Gen Z customers have moved away from traditional credit cards, and over 80% are skeptical of them. Which means they're not using a credit card to manage expenses; they're using a debit card, but then layering on on a transaction-by-transaction basis. Or again, using tools like buy now, pay later, or Cash App Borrow, the means in which they're managing their consistent cash flows. So that's an example of how things are changing, and you've got to get up to speed with how the next generation of customers expects to manage their money.

Jack Dorsey's Block Reveals Modular Bitcoin Mining Rigs That Can Be Upgraded

Jack Dorsey's fintech Block has released its latest Bitcoin product: a long-lasting mining rig with swappable parts, which will enable miners to cut costs on repairing and replacing the high-powered computing devices. Announcing the product Thursday, Block said the machine, dubbed Proto Rig, will last 10 years instead of the typical three-to-five-year lifespan. Proto Rig's design means that engineers can upgrade individual parts of the machine—like hashboards—without buying a new rig entirely. Block said that the new rig would cut costs for miners by 15-20% each upgrade cycle. "Machines break often, are hard to repair, expensive and time-consuming to upgrade, and don't make the most efficient use of power or space," Thomas Templeton, hardware lead at Block, said in a statement. "With Rig, we set out to change all of that—and contribute to hardware decentralization in the process." The new product comes as the cost of mining has increased and the rewards for verifying transactions on the blockchain have become more difficult to earn. Last year's halving cut the payoff for miners to 3.125 BTC from 6.25 BTC. Mining is notoriously difficult and energy consuming, with industrial miners running warehouses full of mining rigs. In its most recent quarter, MARA Holdings, the world's largest company in the category by BTC mined, reported a 505% increase in net income, and other miners reported strong results—but these companies have benefited from the price gains of their Bitcoin holdings. The underlying challenges they face are likely to continue, experts say, and a number of these firms have already pivoted their resources toward AI; or in the case of BitMine Immersion and Bit Digital, become Ethereum treasuries. U.S. President Donald Trump has said that he wants all future Bitcoin minted in the States—a likely impossible task. Many mining machines are made in China, but Dorsey has said he wants to change that by producing them in the U.S. Dorsey, who founded Twitter (now X) before leaving in 2021 to focus his efforts on payments and Bitcoin adoption, has said he wants the virtual coin to be the global currency. He has also described Satoshi Nakamoto's Bitcoin white paper as "poetry." Square Begins Bitcoin Payments for Sellers as Block Stock Hits S&P 500 Block's other companies—like Square and Cash App—have released Bitcoin products, including a crypto hardware wallet, Bitkey. Square's payment terminals also allow merchants to accept Bitcoin payments, though that feature is still rolling out broadly. Block's stock (NYSE: XYZ) was trading about 1% lower on Thursday, according to Yahoo Finance. The company, which joined the S&P 500 in July, is up more than 10% over the past month but down over 12% year-to-date. Bitcoin was recently trading at about $118,200, down nearly 3% over the past 24 hours after hitting a new all-time high mark above $124,000 on Wednesday. The largest cryptocurrency by market cap has risen more than 25% since the start of 2025. CONSUMER STAPLES NEWS: Amazon's (AMZN) most direct rival in handling ad sales across the web, the Trade Desk (TTD), could be in danger of losing one of its most valuable clients – Walmart (WMT), The Information's Catherine Perloff and Theo Wayt wrote. Last year, Walmart renegotiated its four-year-old arrangement with the Trade Desk, under which advertisers buying spots on the Web using Walmart shopper data for targeting have to use the Trade Desk's technology. The new arrangement is no longer exclusive, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. Walmart is expanding its 10% employee discount to include nearly all grocery purchases, effective immediately, in an effort to help employees with rising grocery costs amid inflation, The Wall Street Journal's Sarah Nassauer reported. Extending the discount to more goods year-round is 'one of our most requested benefits,' said Walmart Chief People Officer Donna Morris in a letter to staff Wednesday. Amazon's Whole Foods currently offers workers a 20% discount on most in-store purchases on the first day of employment, while Target (TGT) offers a 20% discount on fresh and frozen produce and some store brand items and a 10% discount on most other goods, available on the first day of employment. Manchester United (MANU) announced a new three-year partnership with Coca-Cola (KO), naming Coca-Cola as the club's Official Carbonated Soft Drinks Partner in the United Kingdom and Europe. The agreement includes pouring rights for Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Zero, Diet Coke, Fanta, Fanta Zero, Sprite, Sprite Zero, Dr Pepper, and Dr Pepper Zero. Marc Armstrong, chief business officer at Manchester United, said: 'Coca-Cola and Manchester United are two of the world's most iconic brands, each with a proud history of bringing people together. We are forming a partnership that will go beyond matchday refreshments at Old Trafford – creating engaging and memorable experiences that connect our fans to the club in fresh and impactful ways.' announced customers in more than 1,000 cities and towns can now order groceries with their Same-Day Delivery orders, with plans to expand to over 2,300 across the U.S. by year-end. Amazon said: 'This marks one of the most significant grocery expansions for Amazon as the company introduces thousands of perishable food items into its existing logistics network that is already optimized for speed and efficiency. Customers will have the option to order produce, dairy, meat, seafood, baked goods, and frozen foods, alongside the millions of items such as everyday household essentials, electronics, fashion, home and garden, and more already available for Same-Day Delivery on Shares of competitors Kroger (KR), Instacart (CART), Walmart and Target were all lower ahead of the market open on Wednesday following Amazon's announcement. Costco announced July comparable sales were up 6.4%. The company reported net sales of $20.89B for the retail month of July, the four weeks ended August 3, an increase of 8.5% from $19.26B last year. Net sales for the first 48 weeks were $248.35B, an increase of 8.1% from $229.81B last year. ANALYST COMMENTARY: BofA downgraded Target to Underperform from Neutral with a price target of $93, down from $105. Target is now underperforming Walmart on a comparable sales compound annual growth rate vs. 2019 and digital trends 'look very challenged,' the analyst told investors. The firm sees increasing longer-term sales and margin risks given slowing digital sales growth, a lack of scale in digital advertising and third-party marketplace, elevated tariff, pricing and merchandising headwinds, and increasing competitive threats from both Walmart and Amazon, the analyst added. Morgan Stanley, which has an Overweight rating and $300 price target on Amazon shares, believes the company has been losing 'modest' online grocery share to Walmart, DoorDash (DASH), and Uber (UBER) due to price, selection, convenience, delivery, and pick-up options, and thinks this category expansion and effective price reduction is an important signal of increased investment to drive durably faster growth. The grocery opportunity is large, but the extent to which Amazon increases competition could eventually challenge growth or profitability of peers, the firm argued, noting that among all grocers, Walmart has the most demonstrable track record of share gains and that it has been preparing for this risk over the last decade. Evercore ISI believes this expansion deepens Amazon's customer engagement by strengthening a high-frequency purchase category into the Prime ecosystem, increasing stickiness and customer lifetime value. The deeper integration of groceries with Amazon's vast general merchandise offering positions the company more aggressively against competitors like Instacart, Walmart+. By setting a relatively low free delivery threshold of $25, Amazon applies pricing pressure that may challenge rivals' ability to compete on convenience and cost. Given that this segment is a $1T-plus market in the U.S. and perhaps $2T-plus across all of Amazon's global markets, there should be a large growth opportunity here, Evercore added. The firm has an Outperform rating on Amazon with a price target of $280 on the shares. Oppenheimer increased its price target on Walmart to $115 from $110 and reiterated an Outperform rating on the shares ahead of quarterly results. Following a more difficult backdrop to start the year due to unexpected tariff and expense headwinds, the firm believes a positive guidance revision cycle could again materialize soon. Oppenheimer is lifting its Q2 constant currency sales projection to reflect the potential for stronger top-line momentum than it envisioned a few months ago. The firm is now anchored to the high-end of management's FY25 guidance range of $2.50-$2.60. Oppenheimer believes the company could lift FY25 financial targets either with the upcoming Q2 report or with the Q3 print. Benchmark upgraded Instacart to Buy from Hold with a $67 price target. The company's Q2 results and outlook, including a GTV growth inflection, suggest 'it may not matter' whether the company is not sustaining category share, as the firm suspects to be the case, since the company is riding 'a secular tailwind gaining momentum each quarter,' the analyst noted. Instacart continues to benefit from competitive pressures facing regional/smaller grocers that need its platform to compete with mass merchants and online players like Walmart and Amazon Fresh, so the trend appears sustainable, the analyst contended.
