Startling new statistics reveal how rampant the issue of people misusing blue badges on UK roads is, with parking authorities labelling the "level of blue badge misuse and fraud" as "shocking" and stressing that "we cannot continue to ignore this issue".
The British Parking Association (BPA) has released figures indicating a staggering increase in blue badge misuse, which has soared by over 1,000% since 2016. The RAC has reported a 400% surge in the theft of blue badges in London between 2014 and 2023.
According to the BPA, fraudulent activities include stealing badges and creating and selling fake badges online.
People have even been using badges belonging to dead people, reports Birmingham Live.
Experts are also noticing a troubling trend of people 'borrowing Grandma's badge' simply to benefit from free and convenient parking.
The BPA is calling for local councils to be given greater powers and resources to effectively combat this problem. For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation, sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here

Alison Tooze, chief engagement and policy officer at the BPA, commented, "The statistics around the level of blue badge misuse and fraud are shocking."
"We cannot continue to ignore this issue, especially when the victims are some of the most vulnerable in our society."
People are being reminded of the importance of accessible parking for blue badge holders.
Tooze continued: "Badge holders rely on accessible parking to carry out their day-to-day activities and for many it is a vital part of living an independent life.
"Perpetrators of blue badge misuse and fraud deprive genuine badge holders of this right to freedom, whilst costing ordinary taxpayers millions every year. This must stop."
Gabriel Hambleton, from car detailing supplier Gold Label Car Care, stated: "Misuse of a blue badge can have serious consequences.

"Lending the badge to someone else, using it after it has expired, or failing to return a badge that is no longer needed can lead to its withdrawal and a fine of up to £1,000.
"This helps protect the integrity of the scheme and ensures support goes to those who genuinely need it."

Welsh Labour MP Chris Bryant says he was sexually abused by theatre boss as a teenager
Welsh Labour MP Chris Bryant says he was sexually abused by theatre boss as a teenager The Labour minister said he was left feeling like a '16-year-old whore' by Michael Croft, the head of the prestigious National Youth Theatre Labour Minister Chris Bryant has recounted how he was sexually abused by the disgraced founder of the National Youth Theatre (Image: Visionhaus/Getty Images) Sir Chris Bryant has revealed he was sexually abused as a teenager by the founder of the National Youth Theatre, Michael Croft. The Labour minister became emotional during an interview, describing how he felt like a "16-year-old whore" due to the actions of Mr Croft, who was at the helm of the esteemed drama group. In a conversation with the Sunday Times, Sir Chris Bryant recounted that Mr Croft, who died in 1986, would invite him for dinner every evening when he was part of the company in London during the summer of 1978, at the age of 16. One night, said Sir Chris, he returned from the toilet at Mr Croft's residence to find his host, who was four decades older than him, naked apart from a silk robe. The minster said the abuse left him feeling like a "16-year-old whore" (Image: PA) The MP for Rhondda and Ogmore disclosed that Mr Croft then propositioned him for sex, and he felt he had no choice but to comply, reports the Mirror. Ahead of the launch of his book 'A Life And A Half: The Unexpected Making Of A Politician', Sir Chris admitted: "I don't like telling this very much because I've not told it very often. "It was always the same Italian in King's Cross. He would eat and drink, I would eat, then he would theoretically give me a lift home, except I always ended up at his house." For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation, sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here Sir Chris stated that Mr Croft never made another advance towards him, and they remained friends. As an ordained minister, he even agreed to officiate Mr Croft's funeral. However, he expressed anger over the abuse of power and confessed to internalising the shame. "He behaved absolutely appallingly, it's despicable," Sir Chris said. "Michael, in my case, managed to spot somebody who was gay at a time when nearly all homosexuality was illegal - certainly very frowned on - so presumed that people would keep a secret." He revealed that at least one colleague from his National Youth Theatre days was also abused by Mr Croft. The 63-year-old also disclosed he had been sexually assaulted by five male MPs during his time in Westminster, though he has not identified or reported them. "There was no system for doing so and I was frightened it would make me look bad," he explained. He noted that homophobia in Parliament had decreased during his 24 years as an MP. A statement on the National Youth Theatre website said: "We are grateful to Chris Bryant for disclosing to our team the historical abuse he suffered in the company in the 1970s. We are very sorry that this happened to him and to others who have previously shared with us their accounts of historic abuse by the same perpetrator. "As we set out in a public statement on the case in 2017, we stand in solidarity with all victims of abuse and encourage anyone who has experienced abuse, no matter how long ago, to speak to someone and access support. "In this case the perpetrator has been deceased since 1986, but all reports made to us will be dealt with in accordance with our robust and formalised safeguarding policy and practice. "While Chris writes he doesn't feel damaged by what happened, we recognise that being subjected to an abuse of power can have lasting consequences for many, in different ways. "Anyone getting in touch will be listened to and treated with care and respect by trained professionals, in line with our certified trauma-informed practice. "We are grateful to Chris for his support of our organisation today, and acknowledgement of how different a charity we are in 2025 to the one he encountered in the 1970s, with thorough safeguarding practices and policies in place." 'Neighbours let kids play in my garden without permission - they won't stop'
'Neighbours let kids play in my garden without permission - they won't stop' The homeowner asked her neighbours to stop letting their kids play in her garden - they called her "unreasonable" Neighbours keep letting their kids play in my garden without asking (Image: SolStock via Getty Images) A homeowner has expressed her frustration after her neighbours repeatedly allowed their children to play in her garden without permission, leaving her at a loss for what to do. Seeking guidance on Reddit, the woman shared that when she confronted her neighbours about the issue, they labelled her "unreasonable" and insisted they should be able to send their kids over without checking first. She explained that she has invested "a lot of time and effort" into creating a "peaceful oasis" in her garden for her family's enjoyment. Despite this, her neighbours, who have three young children, seem to think it's acceptable to let their kids use her garden as their playground without seeking consent. The woman recounted how the neighbours "claim that it's just harmless fun, and the kids enjoy our garden." She noted that while she isn't opposed to sharing her space on occasion, she would much prefer it if they asked for permission beforehand. In her Reddit post, the user said: "My next-door neighbours have three young children who are always full of energy. Lately, they've been letting their kids play in our backyard without asking for our permission. They claim that it's just harmless fun, and the kids enjoy our garden," reports the Mirror. "Here's the thing: I don't mind sharing our space occasionally, but they've been doing this without any notice or asking for our consent. It's become a frequent occurrence, and it's starting to disrupt our peace and damage some of our plants and decorations." The homeowner said her neighbours let their kids into her garden without permission and won't stop (Image: Getty) She further mentioned that when she approached the neighbours to discuss the matter, she encountered opposition. Her neighbours "seemed offended" and said she was "being unreasonable." She added: "They argued that it's a shared space since our yards are adjacent." Concluding the post, she wrote: "I just want to maintain some control over my own space and ensure it's respected. Or am I overreacting, and should I be more lenient with the neighbour kids?" The post garnered thousands of responses, with many siding with the woman's desire to keep her garden private. Suggestions poured in about erecting fences to limit access, while others pondered how the neighbours would react if the roles were reversed. Amongst the feedback, concerns were voiced regarding potential injuries to the children on the woman's property. One person said: "If one of those kids gets injured on your property while playing without proper supervision, you could be held liable." Another added: "I'm not a lawyer, but I'd be concerned if one of the kids hurt themselves and any liability you may have, especially if you're not home. What if they break something, will they replace it. "No and each time you see them playing without permission tell them to leave or escort them home. You may need to get a fence." Article continues below A third added: "This is a liability. Build a fence. You don't want to be sued if their kids injure themselves on your property."
